I have done this with my Tupperware Stack Cooker. It wouldn’t be my first choice to microwave a whole chicken, but to me it’s about the same as a pressure cooker chicken. Juicy but a bit tougher than a perfectly cooked oven chicken. Not #1, but it’s edible. Lol
I was given a microwave for Christmas around when microwaves were new, and didn’t have turntables, I cooked our Christmas turkey in it, my dad, who wasn’t a turkey lover, was extremely impressed and enjoyed it! Chicken is very easy.
OK, first off, you crack me up. And I appreciate the fact that you actually have a microwave and not a combo microwave/convection oven like most people show doing a chicken. I just turn them off. My Anchor Hocking pie plate is supposed to be microwave safe, it blew up on me a couple of months ago. First time I used it, first time it ever happened. Ever. So I’m a little skittish. But I’ll see. Thanks for your time.
Hi Heather, I knew it would work because one of the 1st PC parties I went to 10+ years ago they featured cooking in the deep covered baker. The consultant did the chicken in the microwave. I was so shocked I had to buy the deep covered baker but I don’t think I have ever used it in the microwave 🤷♀️. It has had tons of use in my oven. Loved watching your reaction and I think I still have a whole booklet of DC baker recipes the consultant gave me. If you would like me to look,
I currently live in a boarding house with meals provided and a kitchen with both a regular oven and a large microwave oven. I could have used the oven after dinner but decided to use their large microwave to cook in. So, after watching your adventure in testing if a whole chicken could be cooked in a microwave using a covered baking dish, I was sold. My only disappointment is the microwave does not seem to produce a deeply browned skin which is my favorite part. Since my current situation is temporary, I will have future chickens baked in my own kitchen in a convection oven. However, I will buy a whole Foster Farms chicken and cook it in the microwave, using the breast meat for chicken salad sandwiches and eat the rest reheated in the same microwave for late-night snacks. Thank you, Heather, for an entertaining video and for declaring microwaved chicken edible even if a different texture to an oven-baked chicken. I will give Kinder Buttery Steakhouse a try as seasoning has always been a very important step in cooking a successful dish. I will bookmark this so I can post my own review after microwaving a chicken for myself. I do wonder if I could also cook a leg of lamb or a rack of lamb in one as lamb is my favorite meat.
Since I live alone (am a Merry Widow😉), I used a half chicken. The oval glass casserole with lid was perfect and so was the chicken. I was truly amazed. I set my microwave for 15 minutes at 900, but checked it at 10-12 minutes and the temp reading was more than adequate. I then put the casserole without lid on the raised rack and grilled until it was browned as I like it...perhaps another 3 minutes or so. THIS will now be my go to method. So moist, delicious juices and far less energy used had I done it in the oven or had to fuss with it on the cooker/stove. By the way, just like you I am surprised at myself that I even considered 'cooking' a chicken in the micrwave...and the texture - for me - was perfect.
This video was amazing! I stumbled upon this video because I recently bought a vintage 1986 GE Microwave, and on the cooking directions list at the front, it has "whole chicken" listed and it made my jaw drop. Like, who would ever do that? Honestly, after seeing this, I may try it just to see how it turns out! Plus, the microwave I got has a temperature probe and a temperature cook function so I can just dial in 165 degrees and let it do its thing. Could be a fun experiment!
Very inspiring. I have a new 25 liter microwave with a quartz grill element. I think I shall try this but finish it off under the grill to brown it and crisp up the skin more(while I make a sauce out of those fabulous juices)!
A long time ago I used to cook boneless skinless chicken breasts in there because they came out moist, not dry. Never thought of a whole chicken in there.
It's a great way to cook the whole bird ,but I have an air fryer and oven so I can put it in for five minutes ,I like the skin on it keeps it from being dry. I am a believer in microwave whole chicken now. Thanks , I won't buy in deli now that it's this easy.👍
Love the video! The “ohh!!MY!!!😱s & WOW!!!😱s are worth watching. The sheer unbridled shock! It had to be a college question. Limited resources requires adjustments. Ramen is one. But hey, it cooks things, we’ve been reheating pizza in it for 40 years, I always steamed my veggies in the microwave. Bright green and less loss of juices. The cookware is the key. You CANNOT cook anything open. You need the steam effect to cook. And check often. When you overcook in a microwave, you won’t see anything turned brown or black. It’s not like a convection oven so you have to have an accurate thermometer and check until you know exactly how your microwave works and exactly what size how long to cook. Once you have that, you’ll cook just like in the oven. Different setup, some different covered pan or vessel, different cook-time, But in the end, imminently servable.
Aw great! Now I'm going to have to try this!!! So... the microwave turntable...? I guess it serves no purpose when using a large dish like the deep dish cooker, right?
Actually the turn table worked great rotating it in a circle. I don't know if it mattered too much. But really.. it's crazy it worked! And confession, I had to make two chickens for a weekend getaway (chicken salad and chicken soup) and I legit used this again. I asked my family how the chicken tasted, everyone complemented! SHOCKED AGAIN! lol
@@AdventuresinEverydayCooking do you think cooking it in 2 - 10 minute intervals and letting it sit a couple between each for temping than doing like 3 minute intervals would get it more tender?
This really is the difference between different methods. Baking, Sous Vide, Pressure Cooking, Microwave cooking all give you different textures. I am a fan of the pressure cooker but my fiancee hates the soft skin of a pressure cooked chicken. I personally don't care for the time it takes to get good skin and good meat from something like rotisserie.
Cathie, I wish I could tell you, but I’ve moved away from that microwave (we moved in May) so I’m not sure. However I’ll do a little research and find out!
My microwave is 1.4 cb feet. 1000w. You would have a sifference 15 to 30 sec. Itbis not a really considerable difference. Hi power 35 min. In yours or mine. 700w then will take longer, may be 10 more minutes
My fave Chef, David Chang, cooked chicken in the microwave. A for real, legitimate Chef doing it. There's a snobbery towards microwave food, that most have no other alternative. Appreciated for quickness and healthy choice. Maybe half cook in microwave, glaze, and put to finish in toaster oven to counter the texture?
Oh man, I wish I could tell you what power microwave it was but it was just a standard over the oven microwave. We moved from that house so I can't check for you.
Did this last week. Used pyrex baking dish. 10 minutes 3 times. Perfect and so juicy and yummy. I did a video of the process. Now to try the silicon popcorn popper I received from amazon last night to cook a chicken. I looked everywhere to see who's using it for other than popcorn! Think it'll be so perfect.
3 times 10 minutes at 100%. Covered with parchment paper. Came out 👍🏻. I only ever use microwave for cooking. Yesterday chickpea spaghetti. The trick is to first boil water. I use my coffee maker. Then add the pasta. Hope that helps.

Oh yeah. I do have a very nice microwave. Panasonic, 2.2 ft.³, inverter. This thing is huge. Stainless steal outside. I love it. I bought it at a yard sale for 20 bucks. It works great. Best microwave eggs I’ve ever had. Best brownies I’ve ever had. Fluffy. Best cornbread ever had. Fluffy. For a microwave.

You are welcome! A gal commented just above that you can actually do it from frozen if you want!
I have been cooking chicken in a microwave for years,,, it is fantastic
Great vid
It's definitely a time saver!
I just cooked a quarter leg of chicken on just a plate seasoned with nothing but salt and pepper and it was great

Hi, any reason for that decision? was it safety or taste issue? Thanks 🙂

As a kid My dad cooked amazing roast meals and would cook chicken perfect in microwave everytime.
