  • In this video I show you how I built a custom winch bumper for a Jeep JL Wrangler or Jeep Gladiator. This is a cost effective way to offset some of the costs that come with off roading. The vehicle I'm building this bumper for is a 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon but is the same for a Jeep JL Wrangler and similar for a Jeep JK Wrangler. I prefer the stubby style bumper as it has more off road benefits.
    I uses a winch plate from Synergy MFG and then made a bumper shell out of 1/4" thick aluminum plate. This bumper build cost me less than $200 and it was fun to get some TIG welding done on this bumper. This is one of the best Jeep mods you can do.

    What do you guys think of this style bumper?

      It turned out so great! That is a STURDY design. How did you come up with the idea of doing it that way?

      I researched several designs, factoring in time, cost, function, and looks. I felt this design was the best middle ground. It’s based off EVO Manufacturing’s “Quarter Pounder”

      Simple, purpose built, lightweight. I like the stubby style over everything else.

      How much did the bumper end up weighing?

    • @BuiltForDirt
      @BuiltForDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taylored Innovations I didn’t get an exact weight but very close to the stock bumper weight.

      Thank you, I can’t wait to get a winch on it to finish it off

    I made a similar bumper with shackle plates and box section bullbar for my 2 door jk. Good stuff mate.

    Nice bumper. I'm still in debate in deciding to install a stinger on stubby bumper. Creative!!

      Stingers are cool I say go for it!

    Anyone know any stubbies that resemble this one that I can buy?

      Thanks! I sort of based it of off Evo MFGs quarter pounder.

      Thanks! What specs are you looking for specifically?

    • @michaelogrady2867

      The dimensions of the bumper. Maybe your logic on why steel vs aluminum? How much thicker did you need to go with the aluminum to match the strength of the steel?

    • @BuiltForDirt
      @BuiltForDirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dimensions are 37.5” x 7 x 8. That’s length x width x height (not including the hoop). It’s just wide enough to barely fit around the frame.
      Like I said in the video I used 1/4” thick aluminum. Genright used 3/16 thick on their front bumpers so I figured I would go a step farther with the 1/4”.
      Because of how it hugs the frame so tightly I probably could have went thinner. It’s pretty much just a shell that sits around the winch plate.
      Should be very beefy and hold up to some hits but because it’s pretty small it most likely won’t even take many hits. I went as narrow as possible to keep a good approach angle in front of the tires.
      These things are heavy so any time you can use aluminum versus steel that’s going to help a ton. I see a lot of bumpers out of 3/16 steel which is super heavy. The bumper added almost no weight to be honest it’s super light.

      @@BuiltForDirt that was extremely helpful. Thanks. I should be starting my own design shortly. Do you remember what you spent on materials?

      I was under $200 for the whole thing

      I do not unfortunately. I just sort of winged it to be completely honest.

    Do you gave a link directly to that winch plate? Having a hard time finding it on their site. Also, have you mounted a winch to it yet? I’m looking for something that situates the winch as low as possible for maximum air flow.

    • @BuiltForDirt
      @BuiltForDirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I guess they don’t have it listed on their site. It’s really similar to this www.northridge4x4.com/part/winch-plates/jwp0701-lod-signature-series-winch-plate It looks identical

      I did mount a winch finally. You can find that video here: th-cam.com/video/qjJ-jeNirXg/w-d-xo.html

    Anyone know if they still make that winch plate? I can't seem to find it on their website.

      Unfortunately I don’t think it was ever a standard item that they sold

    Who makes the winch plate and that lower front skid plate?

    • @BuiltForDirt

      The winch plate is from Synergy MFG. The lower skid plate is factory from Jeep

    Would you consider making another one for sale?

    • @BuiltForDirt
      @BuiltForDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get asked that quite a bit. Unfortunately it doesn’t work out because I’m not mass producing them it makes them unaffordable

      TJ Mitchell Films well it is exactly what I have been looking for so nice job love the look

    I'm curious, why does everyone making a bumper make it a mud bucket? No one try's to close in the open spaces to stop rust manufacturing mud from collecting in the bumper! All the people on utube griping about rust forming on purchased items yet everything built has huge openings that collect mud and hold water. I'm just curious as to why?

    • @BuiltForDirt
      @BuiltForDirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No griping from me. I don’t go mudding very often so no worries there. It’s a practical lightweight bumper for my application that now has a winch. I couldn’t be happier with it.

      You’re gonna have a hard time finding rust on an aluminum bumper
