The back and sides of a guitar have only a minimal effect on tone compared to their effect on volume. Most of the tone of a guitar comes from the top (soundboard) and the hardness of the material the back and sides of the guitar are made from drastically increases the volume. I have a couple of plastic backed instruments (not just guitars either) and they are somewhat brilliant sounding as well as loud. Definitely not for everyone, but a very imposing sound if you need it.

Going from the start of 'Unruhe', where I got instant goosebumps seeing you perform my all-time favorite piece in this holy recording place and then cut to one of the worst beers around and then drink that wheat beer straight out of the bottle, which made me die a little inside. 🤣

Great video!!! As a scientist I have to say a lot about it. It demonstrates a very important point. The back and side woods don’t really matter!! Yet we have been driving some of these woods to the brink of extinction because of our perceived bias.
It was none other than the father of the modern classical and flamenco guitar, Torres, that claimed the back and sides don’t matter. He actually built a paper mache guitar to prove this point.
Knowing what I know about structural and vibration engineering, I would definitely say the sides really don’t matter. They should be just stiff enough to maintain the guitar structure. The back technically could have a more important role than the sides, but it’s still a secondary effect compared to the top, which is by far the most important piece. You can use any stiff wood and work it to avoid resonance interference with the top.
The neck and bridge is probably the third most important piece in terms of sound, but they rise to possibly secondary status because of their relevancy to ergonomics (i.e., playability) and intonation. As with the back, this is more of proper execution and wood stiffness rather than wood tone quality.
Many times Torres didn’t have the woods that he desired but he made the best of what he had by using his good craftsmanship. Some of his most famous guitars used four pieces to form the backs, and the pieces came from different woods and wood planks altogether!! A good craftsman will obtain the best out of the woods on hand, as Torres demonstrated.
The point is, don’t be picky with what the back and sides are made from, by their look, or even by the label name; we are getting better quality guitars these days from many local luthiers, and even from high end small manufacturers, because knowledge is finally spreading around, and old myths are dying.
Learn what makes a guitar a good one. Find out what intonation, playability, balance, sustain, etc., mean. Tone quality is a matter of preference. Guitars are very personal instruments, so please try as many as you can before forking out major $$$. Beware, buying a guitar you have not heard nor played in person is a gamble.
Let’s conserve, and let’s be wise about how we construct instruments, otherwise there won’t be enough woods to build good instruments in the future.

It has had a crack sealed on the face where pieces join under the bridge. It sounds great as far as I am concerned. I am not a professional so there is that, but I think I do pretty well for a hobbyist. It was used and did not cost a whole hell of a lot.

I have a vew good Guitars that make me Happy too, at home. Like an Raimundo black limba. It s only about 800 € .. 1\4 of the Hanika.
But it hast defenetly some good qualitys too. Maybe the G String ist a little to much "Plastik" like. But i was looking for a little massive punchy and good singing Sounding guitar for traveling, without to much worry about a damage.
But i was looking for another 'Meisterklasseguitar' thats gives me an oposite to the Hanika.

"It's a (mass produced) cheap Japanese Alvarez Classical, not worth anything" They didn't even recognize the Brazilian rosewood bridge and fret board.
I've been questioning my atheism ever since. I've got to be the only guy in Idaho playing flamenco and it was just a random stop at a random pawn shop, looking for Breaking Bad DvDs, but ended up literally the happiest day of my 50year life

Interesting 'transparent guitar', presumably made to display internal construction details. Back in the very early 90's I visited one of the Granada makers on cuesta de Gomerez who also had built a perspex guitar. Apologies but his name escapes me although I have a photo or two of him. He had built it to display the back bars - which ran up and down the length of the back rather than the usual method of running across the back.

Nono, my guitar was made by Gioachino Giussanni, an Italian luthier. Your question is very interesting and I was thinking about it a lot since my trip. I've been playing on my guitar for over 3 years now and it has a really well defined sound and feel by now, and I know everything about it, so it's super comfy to me. At Siccas I mostly played brand new guitars, and a fresh guitar never has as much of a well defined sound as one that someone have been using for a while, I hope this makes sense. The new guitars need to be played. So while there were lots of guitars I felt good about and I know there's a huge potential in them in the long run, at the stage where they were it's not really a good trade for my guitar which I already "broke in" or as we say, played in. But of course, as a second guitar I'd bring home most of the guitars I tried hahaha :D The one for example I tried at 7:11 was sooo good, maybe a bit too big for my hand, but still I really enjoyed that one.

@@beatrixguitar yeah, I can only imagine the bond you have with your guitar you've had for 3 years. I'm probably the opposite of that as I have a ton of guitars and while I like them all, I don't have a favorite. Since I have several guitars I was kind of suggesting if you were to buy a new one, not trade in your current one now.
I haven't been tuning in to your videos for a little while now. I think you were just starting your teaching gig. Please tell me you didn't get laser surgery for your eyes. I miss the old look with your glasses. 🙂

A full 10 out of 10 for the entry of Mr. Luchena. Announcing yourself with "singing birds", then pretending to be too modest and shy to be shown in your video and then walk out of the room, as the coolest guy around. And the first words with that rough voice is: "Hang on. I will close or everyone will know... our secrets...". This is how you do it.

I’m not an expert on acoustic classical guitar. But I know electric players. You can give the maestros a cheap guitar and cheap amplification and in 10-30 mins they’ve found the ‘sweet spot’ of the kit and they’re making it sound like it’s worth a fortune. They only play the expensive gear because you don’t have to waste so much time working out how to make it work! You could give Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius any git box and any rig and they would make it sing (eventually). I’m sure classical acoustic players are no different.

Contrary to the popular beliefs.. the back and side wood of an acoustic guitar / classical guitar don't contribute anything to the tone of the guitar.. you might use Macassar Ebony, Laminated Wood, Plastic, or even carton box as your back and sides.. as long as your top sound board is the same, then you will have exactly the same tone regardless of the back and sides wood used for the guitar. Surprised me too when I found out this fact.

35.000. Are they worth it? Building a guitar takes between 300 and 350 hours. Best materials like Rio rosewood and good spruce for the top and ebony board, bridge and nut material and a set of top of the line tuning machines. Al materials, say between 1200 - 2000 euros.
That leaves us with 33.000 devided by 350 hours makes ruffly 95 Euro's per hour. Taxes, housing and heating the workshop are to be payed off from that amount. In practice it leaves you with 50 per cent of this 95 per hour, is 47,50 per hour. I think it's definitely worth it. Don't you?
