This is the weirdest thing these eyes have ever seen. Seeing a bunch of Andy Bernards singing Neutral Milk Hotel is some kind of glitch in programming...
@@nickn626 mere anarchy is loosed upon the world. I’ll admit that I had to Google the exact phrasing but I knew what poem that was immediately. In fairness, I’m an English major, so I have probably had to read Yeats a couple times now.
This song always struck me as the polar-opposite of an a cappella song (heavy HEAVY instrumentals over vocals). So I think your a cappella efforts are doubly impressive. Nice work!
this is literally the weirdest fucking thing I've ever heard like someone needs to make an experimental film with this over the ending credits. and it only gets weirder as it progresses.
very pleasant, although it strays really far away from the original melody. i wouldnt recognize this if it werent for the lyrics. still enjoyed it, tho.
NMH was polished, it takes a lot of coordination especially for this song (a lot of instruments like French Horn and Euphonium are playing) their sound was just not a bunch of clean tones and whatnot
Those of you who are saying this is awful really upset me. It’s not in the same style, no, it’s not supposed to sound screechy or hard like the original. Jeff said that this album is about whatever you want it to be and however you portray it. You guys don’t understand how beautiful this is. It’s fast but it’s still a ballad. The chords lock beautifully, and a lot of the arranging had it be accurate to the instruments and chords in the actual song, it’s pretty true to the original. And also, nmh is insanely hard to turn into a 4 part harmony piece, and these guys nailed it. It’s true, it’s different, it’s beautiful.
Interesting take. I would have liked to hear more of the dynamics of Mangum's longer words, though. Particularly the last use of "eyes" at the end. It seems like it would have lent itself well to this style.
this reminds me so much of wandavision- like living in the 1950's trying to pretend that everything is perfect but there's some sort of underlying dark secret. without listening to the lyrics it sounds happy but when you listen intently it's like "but then they buried her alive" lol
@@smokyprogg he didn’t say that song was happy, just that the sound of it is. I actually think that’s intentional as a bit of irony of it being such a devasting song with such a cherry tune. This cover kinda adds onto the irony aswell (wether intentional or not)
This rendition is at once interesting, and also a gross misrepresentation of the original song. I feel like everything that was beautiful about the original song was lost here. Whoever made this arrangement completely dismantled the original vocal melody and replaced it with an overly simplistic chordal shifting motif. This rendition is playful and yet stiff. I hope the person who created this rendition understands how much magic was lost here. What makes Neutral Milk Hotel so special is the uniqueness of the vocal rhythm and vocal melody.
They should’ve made the harmonies follow the actual chord progression of the song. This is just two barber shop quartets singing an unrelated song with the lyrics to Holland 1945

yeah, at least they kinda did

It's weird but cool to see this sound so polished. NMH have always been so far from polished.

^which is what he meant by polished...
Yeah! It sounds exactly like the original recording except more polished!
Ruins the song IMO

Another note, the dynamics! They knew when to be quiet and when to be loud and it fit well with the lyrics. I can’t believe people don’t like this!
In a manner of musicality, like it's okay, but stylistically speaking it's a pretty darn lame arrangement.
You're really upset that people have a different opinion to you?
@@throwingninetyeight8631 I don’t think that’s it lol
It's unexpected but it's a good performance.

A soul-crushing song about Anne Frank just seems odd sung like this. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it just feels almost wrong.
