    I'm 35 and have been a carpenter for about 15 years now. Was in the union doing commercial work but now I'm doing residential. I like hanging commercial better cause it's a lot easier to finish cause usually they use acoustical ceilings so you usually just finish the walls which are hung vertically and bulkheads :) I've got my finishing so good to where I mostly just wet sponge and tape,block and finish in 2 coats alot of the time. I just need to work on some textures

    I'm partway into fixing a ceiling patch about the same size as this video thumbnail image. I first filled in the gap between the patch and ceiling with hot mud, by pushing the hot mud deep into the gap. I then built up the areas where the patch was recessed too deep as compared to the rest of the ceiling with more hot mud. Once the patch and surrounding ceiling was closer to being flush (but the patch still recessed) I used paper tape. I then switched to Plus 3 (I think the blue box?) to build up the patch to be level. I now need to prime and texture. I've never textured before.

      Y not use all purpose for gaps being it has glue already in it so u don’t have to worry about hot mud cracking behind the tape.

    • @terryq9966
      @terryq9966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@borys444 Using all purpose mud for filling any kind of wide or deep cracks is a pain in the butt. If it's deep it could take a couple of days to dry and still have a crack in it. Yes, it does have the necessary glue in it but it has extra water in it and should have a little extra water added to it before mudding. All this extra water has to evaporate before additional costs go on. It could be done if you want to add on an extra 2 to 4 days of work. Spend the extra $10-12 for a bag of Durabond and have the project done in a day or overnight instead of dragging it out. Life's too short to wait for mud to dry for days. Just sayin'😀

    Diyer here. Jack of all trades, master of none. Currently getting ready to sheetrock my bathroom that for reasons I can't remember, I decided to gut, 😁
    Given enough time I can get as good a finish as most pros put out. On the other hand if I had to do it for a living, I'd starve to death. I hate doing Butt joints and with a patch you have 4 of them to deal with. Thanks for the pointers, I may master them yet.

    #drywalltube -We are working on two large patches on a textured ceiling (it is not popcorn, looks like they used your skim coating a wall technique and painted the drywall on the ceiling but did not smooth it out). The ceiling has never been painted and we have back filled the joints as you have shown in this video (although we used a premix). We will not be able to work on it again for a few days and if is has not dried yet, we can work on it later. We are hoping to skim coat the ceiling to smooth it out (it will be a slow process since I am doing most of the work, obviously we are DIYers):-) Thanks for your videos, they are so helpful!!

    diyer. storm damage permeated bedroom ceiling and collapsed a portion. Cut a 4x12 swath out of it. I had just removed the popcorn ceiling, retextured and painted about a year ago. My question is the depth of the new wallboard vs existing with plaster and painted neighboring ceiling I guess I sand off some of it to get adhesion and spread the mud to achieve level, then do tape/finishing work? thanks for the vid.

    I'm working on a project almost exactly like this one, but not replacing a section - repairing a few seams that have failed (and no corner joint.) Oh, and outside. No directed water exposure (porch ceiling), but outside. So I'll have to research to see what to use for mud in that environment. Also, even though the drywall is all solid, there's a section that doesn't line up by about >1/8, which I'm assuming I'll need to run a wider joint to reduce the visual impact.

      @@PaulPeck this was perfect 👌. Thank you so much. Your videos have been amazing. My wife and I are renovating an older home and it had a heavy sponge swirl texture (the only way I know to explain it) it was beyond horrible, we literally thought we were going to have to replace the sheetrock. Thats how bad it was. I wish you could see it! I think you would scratch your head and say "what ,the hell!" Lol!! The previous owners even covered the baseboards and window trim with the same sponge applied swirl texture! Lol! I'm just going to replace all the trim with new. I sanded the high spots off the walls and that made it a lot better but it still had a bad texture,only now it was atleast all the same level with no peaks.I found your videos while looking for solutions and your skip coat technique is perfect for our situation. We didn't want textured walls and thought we would just have to live with a heavy knock down texture in order to cover the crappy swirl texture. I did a whole wall as a test to see if I could do your skim coat method and with the first coat it was almost perfectly smooth 👌! I can't believe how easy this is. My wife says it reminds her of frosting a cake ,only on walls! Lol! Anyways i wonder how many people needlessly replace sheetrock thinking they can't fix it. Thanks again! You have saved us so much money and time. Its amazing!

    • @PaulPeck

      I would use a sharp blade on a razor knife and cut the tape as close to the tile as you can. Then, skim out that area a couple times tight to the tile. Prime (or touch up mud and spot prime) > caulk the transition to the tile > Paint. 👍🏻 Let me know. -Paul

    We had a new slider door installed into a former solid wall. Installer finished exterior but the interior drywall has 7+" missing drywall from where wall door was studded in to existing studs.
    Is there a video addressing this issue?

    My husband and I are diy’ers. We have an issue with our garage ceiling. There are 3 cracks. After getting in the attic we found that when the drywall was installed incorrectly. It was tape and muddled without screwing it to the studs. Unfortunately there is nothing to screw to. My husband thought he could fix it by applying mud ( which was old and somewhat dried out).
    About a year later it cracked again. He feels that if he sands it, tape and apply the proper mud all would be good. I said it wouldn’t work and we would be back at square one. My idea is to get into the attic cut 2x4’s place and attach them between the beams and then screw with drywall screws. Mud tape and mud again. He shot me down with my idea. Please help.
    I have pictures. Not sure how to attach

    • @terryq9966
      @terryq9966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Prefill with quickset is recommended for all butt and repair joints and will cause you less in return calls for returning cracks and tape bubbling. Don't tape with the quickset though cause it doesn't have enough glue in it to properly adhere the tape to the substrate. Prefill not necessary for tapered joints unless the gap is larger than 3/16" to 1/4", then prefill with quickset and tape as usual.

    Measuring the 45 min. ProForm Quick Set Lite proportions...so you don't pull your hair out, think your crazy or stupid 🤨!! With BS and MS Degrees, I understand math and measurement. The ProForm (National Gypsum Co, Charlotte, NC) folks failed to provide the critical info on the bag and would not tell me even though I am an NC resident. So, what you have to know for good mixing results is that 4 cups of dry mix = 1 pound and the correct portion of H2O is 1.27 cups to each pound. The approximate yield of prepared "mud" is 18 square feet (at approximately 1/8th inch thickness) per pound; you get about 333 sq feet of "mud" per 18 pound bag. After you do this measuring thing dozens, hundreds, thousands of times, you'll probably be good at visually estimating ("eyeballing") these proportions. Good measuring and good "mudding".😉

      The all purpose will shrink too much in these types of applications. You could use it, but you're going to have to wait overnight for it to dry/shrink before putting another coat on and letting that dry also, so your just gonna drag the project out way longer than you want 😜. Buy the bag, use what you need and keep the rest sealed and dry as best you can and it will last for years!

    • @terryq9966
      @terryq9966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Move? No seriously, these are gonna forever be a pain in your area of the country. Sorry. If it's flatwork, enlarge the crack out a little with a razor knife and use the quickset (5, 20, 45 whatever you want). After it dries, use paper or Fibafuse tape with setting or all purpose mud. NO FIBERGLASS MESH TAPE!!! You will be repairing that again before you finish. Then you'll have to use a couple of coats of finishing mud tapered WAY out and your little crack will probably be at least 12 to 24 inches wide when you're done. If you don't go out that far, your wall is gonna look like a roller coaster, especially if it's lit up from an angle. If the crack is a corner crack, you might want to try a paintable elastomeric caulk and see if that can take the stress. Good luck 😃🤞.

    Why not just tape while doing the hot mud? I prefer a slighly convex pull scrapper for smoothing between coats or even removing and smoothing old texture before skim coat. Jack of all trades master of some. Retired US Navy.

    • @terryq9966
      @terryq9966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's really not enough glue in the quickset to properly adhere the tape to the substrate. Some guys will add some white glue to the quickset to solve this problem. I just wait a bit until the quickset starts to get into that pliable/hard phase, them tape away with taping mud.

    • @GregariousAntithesis
      @GregariousAntithesis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry Q I havent done tons of rock work but i always use hot mud to bed the tape then use premix to finish and i havent had any problems. Are you specifically talking about for doing a repair doing this or even when doing mud and tape on new work with tapered joints?

    • @terryq9966
      @terryq9966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GregariousAntithesisUsing quickset on butt joints is even recommended by the drywall mfgr. You take a greater risk of some type of tape failure using hot mud as a setting compound. It really doesn't have enough glue in it to make the tape fully adhere to the substrate and the layers above it. Repairs like this fall into this category. Tapered joints can just be done with setting or all purpose muds unless that gap is larger than the 3/16"-1/4" that I mentioned. Then fill that large gap with hot mud and proceed as usual.
