Io Mi Son Giovinetta follows a light-hearted tune describing a game played by two young lovers, a daring and lovelorn shepherd and disdainful shepherdess, at dawn in early spring. Mirroring the back-and-forth dialogue between the lovers, Monteverdi has written for the upper and lower voices to sound like they are in a constant singing contest in this piece with its layering and motifs. Monteverdi further capitalises on fast-moving harmonies to bring out the lively nature of the playful commotion in full dramaticness.
