    What is your worst engine teardown story? Comment below!

      No sling washer installed. ACE hardware for head stud nuts and washers ... Screws used for dowel pins for main bearings. Orings for valve guide seals ...The list goes on. And on

    • @bedlamite42

      Coke cans used for shims around the main bearings when it needed an align bore.

      @@type4revolutionstudio That's a good list Jeff, I'm sure you've seen more than your share of VW nightmares. Screws for dowel pins is a fun one!

    I bought a “running motor “ on the samba dropped to a friend engine builder. Engine never ran, paid the man the 500$. Contacted him and I got back $100 and a very valuable lesson 😬!!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch, that stings a bit. Even the ones that "run" may be used up. Issues really start to surface under sustained load, which makes buying a runner really difficult. I bought a VW that "runs, drives, and stops" one time only to find out it needed a lot of help to keep running, driving, and stopping. Sorry it went bad for you but glad you're here!

    well hitting jugs for more then two hours after day's off socking. jugs and pistons ready for the garbage and bought new once.
    your engine got way more end play then our oval. i hope you can rescue that block for later, but i guess not.
    good video

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks '55! That sounds like a long time trying to get the cylinders out of a case, no fun. And you're right, lots of end play and doesn't look good for this case for a good rebuild. May just have to experiment with it instead! Thanks for watching as always!

  • @ajk2749
    @ajk2749 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You've got the patience of a saint! I'd be inventing curse words which, of course, could be edited out of the video. Maybe you're not that saintly! Good thing you've got a nosy assistant!
    One problem I had with that '68 VW with the rebuilt engine was the crankcase oil being diluted with gas. That was never solved and I bought a new car in 1974. How could gas get in the crankcase? Perhaps through the mechanical fuel pump? Bad seal or diaphragm?
    Good luck again and I am looking forward to more videos!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks @ajk2739. I have occasional have discussions with the universe that don't make the final cut. It's feasible that it gets there through the pump. I'd also be curious about the carb leaking down some way. The latter may be revealed by a long cranking time when the car has sat for an extended amount of time; the idea being the bowl is empty. It's a bad situation for sure. Thanks for watching!

  • @bennyblanko3
    @bennyblanko3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You should learn how to rebush those carbs yourself, since it is so common to have a little air leak there. There is a guy "Motoresto Florida, that does motorcycles - but he is super good at carbs, and has a lathe. But, maybe you could get one of those harbor freight mini lathes, and do it yourself. I'd always send mine out too - think it used to cost about 30 bucks. Haven't worked on a vw in a long time, but ... we'll see what the future holds. Cool video - brought back so many memories.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree, learning the re-bushing process is on the list. I have an old lathe I'm learning to use, will probably need a specific reamer too. We'll get there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!

    I don't have a worst engine tear down but a funny story. I used to have a bunch of bugs, busses, ghia's and did full frame off restorations. A neighbor (big time "" dealer) wanted some help swapping motors out. Went to an apartment complex, and parked next to another bus as I recall to swap motors into his bus. I have the motor out, and putting it in his bus (about 45 minutes) and he keeps looking around, a little nervous. He forgot to tell me that it wasn't his bus I was taking the motor out of. So, I guess back in the day, without knowing it, I stole a motor ... boy was I young and dumb. VW's got stolen all the time back then. I still want a baja or buggie, but don't have room for another car.

    When we picked up Abbey from her 20 yr resting place that engine had that much play in it as well. Unfortunately that case had already been machined to the limit. So we found a new engine.
    Will be interesting to see the reason for the JB Weld on the top of the case.

    We pick up a sand rail last November, cleaned up the mouse nests and mud dobbers. Put it back together, new spark plugs, wires, points,condenser,
    fuel pump. Just to mention a couple other things. Got it running. Noticed no 1 was cold. Compression check not good 2,3 and 4 around 100lbs. No. 1 goose egg. Noticed bad leak between head and barrel. Timing mark way off. Haven't check end play yet.

      Time is elusive. I’m retired and I get to spend unlimited time there. It goes without say that organization in a garage is critical. I keep changing the garage operations inside around like moving the welding table closer to the door to sweep out the metal grindings outside.
      My entire shop is on wheels so you can bring the bench to the project and I have an engine table (hydraulic)
      that fits under the vehicle for removal/installation (and the single policy helps), but having things movable is nice. Your my favorite channel, I have watched all your shows, even the Rv ones🙈.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesmorris7074 I agree. It was a game changer for me when I decided the garage would only be used for the work I do there; no storage of unrelated stuff. I also prefer everything possible to be on wheels. Seems we think alike! I hope to share a material handling project soon that you may enjoy. Thanks for your support, it's great to have you with us!

      Yeah, not a lot of good signs here. I'd like to think these engines get treated better now that they are classics but a few decades ago they were treated like disposable aging economy cars. Still fascinating to see what goes on in a VW engine, good or bad! Thanks for being here Jeff!
