There's something amazing about driving an old car you build and maintain yourself. I’ve been playing with old VWs for almost 30 years and dreamed about driving old cars for longer than that. I bought Dweezil in the mid 90’s and quickly became fascinated with their legendary engineering, the experience of working on them, and the feeling of driving an old car down the road. It’s what I want to do everyday and I know you do too. Together, I believe we can keep these beautiful machines on the road and celebrate the self-reliance of maintaining our own transportation. We’re going to build it and go. We’ll share the right techniques, approach, and reasons for what we do, how we do it, where we go, and why we must. We’ll even do it live at a few events along the way. There are a lot of great people in our circle of friends and I hope you’ll join us here at Haptic Garage.
I Tried to Swap Shop for Annie's VW #floridabugjam
We had this great idea to do a Swap Meet Challenge on behalf of Annie's VW and it worked... until it didn't.
Data service just wouldn't keep up but we didn't quit! Annie did great dealing with the dropouts and the surviving footage is included here. Check out the whole story on the first Haptic Garage Swap Meet Challenge!
Already watched the live stream? The new footage starts at 14:25

Never cut the back side Bad information🤦🏾♂️
Hey. Trying to make my own align boring tool. This and your other vid were really useful. You wouldn't have the dimensions of the pieces on either en that are used to set the bar in the case would you?
Tins fit like a glove.
Not a expert by any means but you would think you would rotate each cutter by 1/4 to each other. Enjoy your videos.
Sorry, I missed your broadcast. Never got notification. Like to see your adventures at the swap meets.
No worries @dog01b52, glad you were able to catch up with us! Despite the tech issues we had with the live stream, this was a fun twist on our usual swap meet live streams. We'll have to do more of this soon!
Great video, lots of good things I need to learn.
Thanks Levi!
Hi Brent, nice video with a lot of different swap parts, Nice you did find some for Annie & your self, Greetings.Hubertus
Thanks Hubertus, I was in the swap meet the entire time, glad to find a few treasures for myself and friends!
Don’t sweat the little back ducts; you can get them aftermarket from EMPI and they fit well as opposed to most aftermarket tin. You got a great deal on the rest!
Thanks, good to know. I have some of those on hand that I'll send along with the other parts.
is annie winter driving it? if not I am not so sure about the need for a thermostat.....I just drove up to the mountains at 27 degrees and my bus ran great.....Not running too cold. that would need to be under 160 degrees. Highly unlikely.
Hey Mike. I'm sticking with what I said in the video but it's neat to hear from you again.
hey Brent! Thanks again for this fun little side-quest I put you on! This will make a HUGE difference for Helen's little engine moving forward and I'm excited to make the swap. I'd love to try a live stream like this again in the future for sure. Sorry I didn't couldn't be in the chat during the premier! Life, am I right?? ha!
Thanks Annie, I'm excited for you to make the upgrade and like the way you're doing it- work with what you have and make improvements as you're able. Glad you're up for another live stream, this was so much fun while it lasted!
Bring a small shopping cart, or wagen to haul parts around. It keeps your hands free.
I've used a variety of methods, including parking Dweezil nearby or stashing at a friend's swap space. A custom wagon would be a fun addition
@@HapticGarage Having my wagen at swap meets helps, especially for heavy parts.
Yeah, definitely been some times that it would have been helpful. This time I bought an antique pallet jack and needed friends with a trailer to help!
Those fan shrouds with the venturi rings, are off the 1975-79 FI engines.
Good info, thanks @vintage76! Do they have an advantage for other applications?
@@HapticGarage Yes, those venturi rings can help any type 1 engine. Look it up, on the samba.
The Venturi rings help with more airflow. Andrig manufactures and sells them for OEM and aftermarket shrouds.
@@vayabroder729 I'll look them up Vayabroder. I have a couple with the venturis I've been saving for the right build. It's good to understand them better!
@vayabroder729 If the FI shrouds are priced right, it will be cheaper to buy them and remove the venturi rings off them. Or used the FI shrouds. The aftermarket venturi rings are $55 plus shipping.
I agree with you about the thermostats, on air-cooled engines.
Thanks @vintage76
90% of cars in CA dont have thermostats.....Running mostly in warmer weather at this point. No freezing winter driving anymore. For that theory to be good your engine would need to be running at less than 160 degrees. Which is what most engines ran at before smog equipment. when most air cooled engines are running between 260 and 300 in the summer.
If you’re operating the car in colder climates I’d say yes; they help in warming up the motor appropriately.
I made it
Woohoo! Hey Greg!
Well there you go
Hey Fred! It was great hanging out at the show with you last weekend, looking forward to the next one!
I see u using kerosene for cleaning am I right about that. Why?
Kerosene makes a great shop solvent without being really really flammable like other options. I've tried the organic stuff but it didn't do the job. I'm fortunate to have a parts washer with a petroleum compatible pump.
@ I noticed that The fluid was reddish. Thanks for your responses to my dummy ?
I’ve always used the paper gaskets but you say they are a joke. Please tell me what’s better, is it cork or a neoprene ? Thanks.
Hey @RJLM330, I use them too but first give both sides a coat of Permatex 3H and let it dry. I feel that makes it more like a real gasket. Because it's fully dry when installed, there isn't a lot of cleanup at the next oil change. Just the untreated paper seems likely to wick oil. Having said all of that, do what works and thanks for watching!
Despite being 4yr old this has series on repairing the has been extremely enjoyable and instructional. Just watching you fit and finish the tins has taught me how to at least learn to try and do some welding. I have not skipped forward to see the end of this restoration. So it’s like a thriller movie. Keep on.
Thanks @RJLM330, so glad you found the series and are enjoying it start to finish!
Lifesaver
Thanks @TCOmotors!
If your using the aviation sealant that’s what I use if I’m ever going to use it
Yup, it's not the fanciest sealant out there but I've had decent results. Thanks for watching!
The HomeDepot tile surface plate is s fantastic idea! Very informative lesson. Keep 'em coming👍
Thanks @christianmccollum1028!
Great video. I am in the middle of this process now. One question though; I was going to trim the fan shroud to fit “deeper” into the cylinder tins, but I had this epiphany: When you bolt the generator stand to the block, and the generator to the stand and the fan shroud to the generator, doesn’t THAT determine how deep the fan shroud will sit in the cylinder tins? Because that makes it a solid assembly. I have this problem on the passenger side tin: the shroud is too high, but the driver side tin, fits into the shroud perfectly . The shroud does not contact the engine block in the center. This is driving me crazy. Thanks. Jim
Thanks @DrJazz7 yes, you are correct about the Genny stand holding everything up. The shroud may be leaning to cause the issue you're having, but if you have an aftermarket non-OEM shroud there is a good just doesn't fit and needs modification. Let us know how it goes!
Great to see another video and see the progress on the engine
Thanks @kyridgejumper!
Forgot to mention PATIENCE
4 years ago. Where have I been. Really appreciate your teaching abilities. And knowledge Thanks much. Hope you get this.
Thanks @RJLM330 glad to have you with us!
Nice job. As these type 1 & 4 cases get older the camshaft bearing saddles droop over time. Another issue to check and maybe fix if possible.
Thanks vintage76, I agree. Cases aren't getting any cheaper so these once-drastic repairs may help keep a few more on the road. Good to hear from you!
See you next weekend at Bugjam
Thanks, looking forward to seeing you then!
Very good video!! Glad to see you back!! Oddly enough I have two new torque wrenches and still use the same one you used. That’s smooth!
Thanks Slade! Yeah, it does the job reliably as long as you're in a position to see the scale. And inexpensive too! I'd like a clicker but don't trust the affordable ones. Talk atcha soon!
Encore!!!
Good to see you back, dude.
Thanks @stuck1000!
These are fun to watch. Ive been wanting to see this process. Now im just a dope with a question. But if valve laping compound cleans up a trashed up exhaust seat like it can. Could that and a sacrifical cam fix an alignment issue?
Thanks @OwhyeeVdub, if I understand you correctly that's a clever approach to the #2 cam bearing issue. However, the problem is in the cam bore; this area tends to collapse a little in high mileage cases. Then it's not round and needs to be cut back into a circle. Lapping compound on the bearing may clearance it but would kinda wear it out and may cause oil pressure loss with a distorted bearing. Ain't nuthin easy!
Another great video and so much information. Good to see you back
Thanks Gary, looking forward to next weekend!
If you were doing this for a customer, would you not be like Mike and get a new Aluminum case with shuffle pins ? Mike probably would toss that case from the get go, but thanks for the really enjoyable video showing us impatient ones how to do it right and with patience. You know everytime I see black rims on the car of think of your bus ! lol
Thanks Dan, new cases are good too but we're on a mission!
You need a fixture to mount that bearing. I wouldn't put that bearing in a chuck. An expanding collet type of thing would be much better. Or just superglue the bearing onto a shaft would be better.
I like the collet idea but not sure what the actual tool would be called. I have something like that I picked up with some other stuff but it's the wrong size. It's meant to be used between centers.
@HapticGarage I have a Hardinge lathe and that hat the 5C spindle nose. The also have large 5c expanding collet chucks. I'm sure you could adapt something like that. Mind you how often do you need it.
Took a look at 5C expanding collets- they seem like an excellent solution for this. I come across old tooling on occasion and will watch for some of these. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Brent🇺🇸,Good to see you are roling again on the project👍🏻, I`m find it`s intresting looking how you preform the working proces & see👀 it`s an time consuming piece of work.Well done & I`m looking forward for the next move, Greetings as allways with the best wishes for you & yours.Hubertus.🙏🏻🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🍀🇺🇸
Thanks Hubertus, always great to hear from you. I bet you have some firewood ready for the winter, stay warm over there!
Glad to seen this project moving along.
Thanks Greg!
These are some of my favourite videos on TH-cam! I love the fact that you end up with such an amazing finished product from cases that would normally been thrown out. Keep up the great work. Always look forward to your videos
Thanks @jeanfortin9616, great to have you with us!
What’s up Brent! May not make it to Bugjam. If I do I’ll look for you. Glad to see you back!
Bummer! I hope you can make it but if not there will be a livestream. I hope you and yours are doing well!

We ran a shop with my dad in the60s and 70s we lined bored many cases with a boring bar my dad made on his Fairbanks Morse lathe. He once line bored a junk case .050 over size and made bearings for it. Such great memories he died shortly afterwards at age 50 a great father and mentor
Oh wow, what an amazing memory of your late father, thanks for sharing that. Would love to know how he made the bearings, particularly the #2 center main. Pretty amazing what a determined and clever person can accomplish.
wow,,,.050 is a lot great job
I never realized how clean your bug is. Very nice! A lot of great info in this video!
