- Marshall boarded a plane and headed off to LA to meet up with Slash and launch the eagerly awaited AFD100 head. Check out this video where Slash and Senior Design Engineer, Saniago Alvarez, talk us through the awesome features of this unit and Slash puts it through its paces!
I just love listening to this guy!
After all, I'm pretty sure a lot of other guitarists watching this will agree that Slash's often underrated for his playing. I mean listen to his phrasing, that feel is something you have to be born with!
+Ppiliph Nhaj Lot of people think he is overrated. just becouse he is no albe to play like Vai or Gilbert. They probably think that jimmy page was.
I think he probably can play like vai or gilbert, but he just doesn't like to, probably because he has a more bluesy influence base
Ppiliph Nhaj under rated? He's one of the greatest of all time 🤘
yeah same here when i started to listen to guns n roses well just to say he made me inspired to play guitar
ohinek I’m 100% positive he can play like Vai or Gilbert if he wanted
The glory days of music. I have to admit that I’ve been a proud owner of one of these amps for the past decade. Still rock my black AFD 100 t-shirt. All over the place!
Nothing better than hearing Slash play You Could be Mine after SO LONG hahaha
Nightrain sounds so different without Izzy's part.. shows you what an integral part of every riff and song he was
"I get the greatest sound out of my guitar through a Marshall amp"
-Slash
That amp sounds awesome and the auto biasing feature is genius.
You can tell in his voice hes excited
It amazes me how people expect this to sound exactly like AFD, the CD. You have to realize that both, the CD and the promo have been recorded in totally different environments, with the first being a RECORDING STUDIO. Besides, with just a basic knowledge or recording and mixing, people will soon realize that what goes to the CD master is layers and layers in countless tracks, with countless effects, and equalization, and compression, and reverbs, and comps, and editing. This amp sounds great.
I have this amp. And yes, IMHO it certainly does re-create the AFD sound. It's also a damn great amp ( I run it through a full stack) - its also a lot more versatile than most people seem to give it credit for - just dont expect class A cleans !
"Hi I´m Slash" hahahaha...no one noted it. I love this guy...it´s a trully and amazing guitar hero!
How has his voice not changed at all since he was like 20-something?
Gods do not age
Maybe his voice had already changed because of all the booze he drank before 20.
his voice is way deeper than it was in 80s-90s
He is not a singer.
Marshall signature voice
"Hi, so um I'm Slash (for the only idiot in the world who didn't know that)"
Got one of these on wednesday...it sounds AMAZING! and it helps that ive got slash's seymour duncans in my Gibson les paul.
STOP YOUR CRAP ABOUT THIS AMP , IT IS AMAZING ! i got it since release first hand never repaired , never failed , great fucking tone , nailed it !
ps: using a 1969 lead cab on it
I'm really diggin this new direction and vibe Marshall appears to be taking, I hope they stick with it. If only Eddie could take Slash's lead...could you imagine! An EVH7781Y, Eddie Van Halen 1977-1981 years. Hell Marshall already included the one of the hardest part in this AFD100, the built-in attenuator. Just slap in the power section of a 50W, reamped in one head. That's if of course the AFD100 has a true attenuator and not power-scaling. Anyway, love it...great job!!!,
getting one before christmas!!!!!
I saw this and was like, Booyah man! This is right up my ally! Go into Amazon and put it in and it comes up for 5000 dollars. Dream crushed. :(
There is nothing better than an actual Silver Jubilee 1987. The same as he is using on Not in this life time tour
I dont understand why they didnt bring in Frank Levi or Tim Caswell. They should know the most about #36 and #39 tones. Now Frank Levi already passed away so we need to wait until the original amp will be found again.
Without people like Slash, Marshall wouldn't be what it is now :P
WOOOOOOOW!!! Sound AMAZING!! what a killer job marshall did. haha but i just love the way they both squat and stand and exactly the same time. lol! ; )
miss so much the song "you could be mine" with slash :(
Marshall didn't "pull the AFD sound off". The guy's on the Metro Amp forum did all of the R&D for this amp. Lets give credit where credit is due, shall we?! And lets not forget the guy who actually initially created the AFD and the #34 tone (mods)...Frank Levi.
Kudos to the guy's on the Metro forum AND Frank Levi!!!! Shame on Marshall for taking the credit for this amplifier.
what are you talking about? if it was true, Slash would just go to him and get the amp
IGarrettI
The AFD amp? The #36 amp? So you know where it is????!!!!! (-: I mean, if slash could just go ask for it....? Frank doesn't have the amp. Now what?
Jay Linton Then he could ask him how he made it. Would be much easier than recreating it by ear
IGarrettI ...it's a long story but, there were people on a guitar amp forum, that were working out the details to these mods, and while this R&D was happening on the forum, it's believed that Marshall was eavesdropping. Basically letting the members of this forum do the work. Neither of these amp mods are a secret any longer. THE CATS OUTTA THE BAG!!!
In answer to your earlier question, I'm sure Marshall would have felt obligated to pay Frank Levi for the mod specifications had they approached him for them: since it was going to be used for monetary gain.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was Santiago that basically handed over the #34 specs to you while you were still guesstimating component values. Also, Marshall took a different approach IIRC, by attempting to emulate the #36 mod, rather than putting the two circuits in one amp (which kind of makes sense, since they only had one of the two amps), whereas you guys were trying to come up with the original #36 specs. MetroAmp probably does get credit for the idea, but R&D appears to be mostly Marshall. As for Frank Levi, while Marshall's greed cannot be underestimated, I can't believe that he wouldn't ask for some pretty big money to spill the details (he obviously doesn't do it now, even though he says he won't make any other mods like those, which makes it weird since there's no monetary gain any more, but whatever). And finally, I would dare say that the cat is not quite out of the bag for #36. A big part of the cat is, but not all of it D: I have yet to hear a clip that nails AFD. A lot have come close, some _very_ close, but the magic recipe to recreate that tone may very well be lost forever. If it's not, then it's either in that same old amp, or Levi's head (from which it probably won't ever come out).
It took the Night Train segment to make me go 'ah hah.. yeah thats not usual' - going for $3300 out there now. Unreal.
I just watched the entire AFD journal and slash seems cool as shit. Kind, humble, respectful, well spoken, etc. Santiago and team did a great job on this...I
@brickford27 - Slash uses the regular PCB version, standard production model...
Great sounding amp!
@NoStairwayPlease the thing is that the youtube mp3 sound won't let you hear all the nuances that are actually there. you really have to stand in front of it to hear the difference.
It's a tube amp, if you turn the gain down it cleans itself up, like the bridge of Welcome To The Jungle, there's a foot switch, I'm sure it does something.
This is no longer a want, THIS IS A NEED. I NEEEEEEEEED.
Awesome amp! Looking forward to seeing the auto-biasing and power-scaling trickle down to lower price-point future Marshalls. For example, I would love to see a non-star endorsed (i.e. non-inflated price) 1x12 combo or head with these modern features, and killer tone, too, as Marshall seems to have lost its way a bit over the years... which is why many pine for the "classic" yesteryear amp tones. Modeling is no substitute for the real deal... and clearly, Marshall can still deliver the goods.
Don't forget Clapton and Jimi! It really was Jimi first (obvs) and then Slash in the 80s :)
how do you get clean tones? Roll off the volume?
@WayMoreGuitar well it sound like you will be coming from a good start (JMP-1) so you can only go upwards in terms of tone with the amps mentioned, good luck and enjoy those amps
@lespaulman1 I suppose that it is the ORIGINAL '59 gibson les paul !!! He used that guitar to record Appetite for destruction. It is a piece of music history!!
10 years l, i think its about time to launch a slash signature preamp pedal. AFD overdrive maybe
Nightrain sound rocks !
But the Sweet child hurt me, i donne why ... =(
Slash is the man
Santiago, my private technician. He will bias it for my!
@Sasquatch230 Well, I don't know about the US but in Europe they had an amazing price (cheaper than VOS) and that was one of the reasons they were sold out almost immediately.
What a great amp
slash was going to the gym in the 90s...and he plays the guitar 5h a day :D
@MrAviiC I think he's referring to the amp tech.
Sounds like it has a lot of back round hiss !
Kinda like some old Marshall 4 hole Plexi amps !?
@littlewing62 But the weird thing is that it is not expensive at all... it could have double the price that is being offered right now...
agree !
this amp sounds great, but in this video, it doesn't really sounds like the afd recordings, but i'm sure it is just a matter of messing around with the E/Q to match the same sound.
I just realized that guitar is the original guitar that slash used in AFD
@bloodySunday77 really it's reasonable for a signature marshall amp designed to saturate. put a couple of hundred more euros and you get a more versatile bogner shiva that sounds good clean and distorted with a controllable volume boost and also FX loop. now the afd has it's own cool features like the auto bias and electronic power atenuator 2 voicings, but the price is still arguable in my oppinion, to my ears it doesn't sound far from a jcm800. now i don't know how many they'll make.
The captain at andertons has number 2!
@SultaoFeliz i thinik you can by at the same time going for the 100 watt electronic pre amp setting. even tho the amp is made to saturate we never know if it makes good clean sounds. but if i had the chance to have one, i'll use it for what it's designed for.
What are you looking for?? I need AFD100 ..U rock slash 🤘
Thanks :D
WOOOOW
AFD100! Nice nice!
@GreenwichMusic Hell just play it a half step down, there aren't any open strings in the riff so he could've just played it a half step down no problem!
That LP top.... 😭🤤
yeah finally
@ebalvsehvrot Thank you for your reply and to Lespaulman too. And yes, it sounds great!!
It's similar to the JCM800 it's a signle channel amp the only way to get clean is to roll off the gain
FJA Mods makes an amp called the JFD 100...sounds even more like slashes signature tone...Im not affiliated with FJA. Just sharing the good tone with tone chasers.
Count how many times he says "and"
Aidan Lefeld douche
si joder! La cabeza pensante de Marshall es un español..que bien Santiago!!
Interesting that he was tuned in A440
i wonder if slash's amp is the hand wired one or the printed board version?
@shabang71 actually he recorded afd with the custom made copy of `59 les paul, so literally gibson lp slash model is a copy of a copy)) anyway it sounds great
dude i havent seen him play you could be mine in forever
Appetite for Marshall....°°°°)))!!!
Great video. But please put it in 1/2 speed and listen to Slash talk... almost lost my shit
+SebastianFailla haha Oh man! That made my day.
Dude that is some funny shit right there at 1/2 speed.I can understand Santiago better also lol
imho Santiago sounds his best at 1.5
Santiago con Ingles de Extremadura
LivinLegend!!!
van halen never made an official video of the 5150 iii. slash took care of his fan's he rocks
@MrMutron I'm pretty sure he works out, he's probably not the you'll meet, but i bet he tries to stay in reasonable shape, like anybody else..
you can get his sound with most marshall valve heads but if u get an afd u wont pcb dont help and the pedals and racks he has there is worth a bomb
What mic do you use to record the amp when Slash is playing? I'm looking for a good mic and this sounds awesome!!!
the rockstar and the geek
@utPr3d4ToR It's normal, because the Sweet Child tone is a Mod #39
@x86Jadedx thank you
@fmsgpp The #34 was based on Slash's post AFD amps, hence the other switch position being AFD, which is based on the SIR #39 mod. Sadly, according to SIR, they no longer rent that amp and from checking around on the web, they apparently won't confirm or deny whether they're even in possession of it. You can have Tim Caswell (the guy who modded #39) mod an amp for you to try and get the AFD tone, but from checking several forums, it still doesn't nail it 100%.
Does anyone know what type of guitar he is using? It seems to look like a 'burst unlike his AFD Les Paul.
What does it mean to "bias" the amp? What are they talking about?
"A lot" of hiss in the background.. maybe to put some noise reduction in that amp would have been a good idea
crap I need to buy one! I been using rocktron great for metal but hard to get that oldschool rock sound out of it
OH SHIT! If i ever will become a guitar player I will run for the Appetite For Destruction sound. U guys, I KNOW HOW IT SOUNDS. Maybe this amp is the best now, but it isnt the same Sweet child O Mine here! Maybe some1 have listenned more times to GnR, but idk, I JUST KNOW HOW IT SOUNDS. Damn. Its like sex. So, I hope this post will be here for 20 years. See you! IF I will get on top, I will probably play this like Rock. ROCK ON. =]]
he's clean and sober since 2007 or so.
best amp marshall has made in the past 30-40 years...sorry it's true
I really like the jcm 800
@HybridRxn Gibson Les Paul. Cherry Sunburst (most probably)
Is this a limited edition? Why?
5:42 whats the name of the song?
You could be mine
Could you say the same with Gibson and/or Epiphone?
Kulto Black Skull, Rock on \m/
actually its not a gibson... its a replica. the original slash lp. so that burst is pretty unique to that guitar
they should make an amp that has the original van halen 1 tone
No I think the Les Paul would still be a very popular guitar, okay Slash made it a little more popular but it was very popular way before he started playing guitar !
Viva España!!!! Arrival Santiago!
You guys on the MetroAmp S.I.R. 100watt forum are responsible for this amp. You guys know that, right?? Cheers!!!
@superskwrl Hand strength sure, but other than that, not really. Sure, your hands and forearms can get relatively toned if you play a lot, because it's becoming basically a cardio workout for them at that point but you can be weak and play guitar.
By "people like Slash" I meant all great guitarists who have used Marshall amplifiers :)
@Guitar8870 standard? traditional ? what model?
whats the guitar he's playing? i need the price please
The Slash
