  • A mad male cardinal catches a glimpse of his own reflection in the car mirror and relentlessly attacks, mistaking it for a predator. This peculiar behavior repeats itself day after day. The moment the car arrives, he instinctively recognizes the mirror as a gateway to danger, promptly landing in front of it to prevent any potential threats from emerging!

Hi, I have a lot of cardinals around my home. There is one that is extremely aggressive and every morning attacks a kitchen window and any visitors car in the driveway. At first I thought it was being territorial but I don’t think so anymore. When I turn the light on in a room it will fly over to a window outside the room and fly into it over and over. Its partner was locked in the house during the build of the house. We happened to be checking the progress and found it exhausted and barely alive. We tried to give it water and took it outside but unfortunately it died. Every time we visited it would bang on various windows.
Even though we think it found another partner it’s still mad. Sounds odd but really this guy is relentless.

I've seen the same with cardinals! I've read that they think their reflection is another cardinal and they are attacking it. For some reason too, they know the little side mirror on a car is a portal to other cardinals lol

I’ve seen this before. I don’t know why they go for the mirrors. I live in a different state and I’ve seen this with other birds. I don’t know. I guess they’re looking for their mates.

I think they are being territorial. It's pretty funny to watch them go for the car mirrors : )
