The Black Boy is a great pub. For knick knacks try the Yew Tree next time you're Hayling Island way. Great food too 🙂

Sadly as you would have seen in the video, covid put pay to going in, which was a shame as Trev the Camera has a friend in there.

Love it, History and Pubs, enjoying my Beer watching in Thailand...Hampshire and Wiltshire and parts of Oxon being the old Saxon Kingdom of Wessex would you consider making a video of the Pubs in Wantage Oxon Alfred the Greats birthplace and in and around Andover, lived there for 2 years in the late 60s and frequented a few Beer Houses at that time.

Thanks glad you're enjoying the channel. Wattage a bit out of my area but Andover certainly well within it and further walks will no doubt take place around there. Until then there are a couple that may interest you, Stockbridge and another in St Mary Bourne. Enjoy living in such a lovely place and if you stumble across a little short Englishman called Dave Lee say hello from me 🙂

It's a shame that you walk past so much without comment, Rob. For example, Winchester is a very rare example of every type of trading - starting with St Giles' Fair up on the hill above where you started your walk, an annual event . . . Then you have the Butter Cross - the original focus of a weekly market, and actually a 'Holy Cross' that marked the importance of the place, and was built to impress the people. More precious, on your left was the Pentice, a way of protecting shoppers from the weather to make trade more conducive, by extending the first floor (where the shopkeepers lived) over the road. Then, you have the roadside shops - and finally a pedestrianised precinct, exclusive to shoppers, and - for the first time - no vehicles. More bizarrely, the origin of 'paying on the nail' (ie.cash) for goods, originates at the West Gate. You walked past a stone pillar on what used to be the outside of the gate. At night, poor soles with leprosy, who lived in an encampment outside the walls, would come to buy food from produce left outside the gate for them by city traders. On top of the flat-topped stone pillar (known locally as the 'nail' because of it's shape) there was a bowl of vinegar, into which the lepers dropped their cash - which was safely disinfected by the morning. They did not know that leprosy was not infectious!
On a broader front, a unique fact. Winchester High Street, that you walked up, is the only road in Britain to contain an example of every period of our domestic architecture. It's a great fun search! . . . quite hard to find the oldest remains.
A little research enhances every walk. 🔄⚠

Winchester has so much history it would be impossible to make a walk video with everything in, some research has to stay on the cutting room floor but it's great when people like yourself add these fascinating facts in the comments. I think I say in the video that you need more than a day to really see the city.
Thanks for the fascinating facts Michael.
