      if he taped small bolts he shouldve taped that spider smooth it would give way more gains than taping a few bolts

      @@timtaylor9590 I bet that speed cadence sensor on the fork added a bit of drag as well. Is it a requirement to have it there? If not, I'd hide it out of winds way

      @@lechprotean yea i dont think that would even get him a few seconds over the hour time. the crank, im estimating, could possibly give him at least 10 seconds or more. those gaps in the spider and while spinning creates a lot of turbulence similar to a disc rotor or even wheels hence the solid disc wheels. but yea if they really wanted they could integrate that sensor inside the fork, it would be a simple mod from a carbon specialist. but again i would be surprised if it made even a slight difference. positioning and the skin suit are so huge tho.

    Ambient temperature does make a difference. I know the heating system in the main velodrome quite well as I work in the industrial heating sector and instantly recognize the system (4 zones of low-intensity radiant tube heating systems, but I digress) when I did a track experience day at Newport. I would definitely recommend trying out track riding to anyone!

      Did a fair bit of track in my days, but country where I moved to a couple of decades ago never shown appetite for a single velodrome. Not short of trying on my side. Main argument used by the Sport Council is the country didn’t have a single track champion so it could not justify it… 🤔

    I don't think I can even push that gear.
    What caused the blowout?
    Also at what temperature would the heat start slowing the cyclist?
    We're getting a velodrome here soon and we average 30°C, it can get to 35 in the afternoon, probably even hotter on the inside of the velodrome, would that start to slow the cyclist down from overheating? Or would the thinner air provide more of an advantage?

      It’s usually kids who were born into a wealthy family and their dad rode in the Tour de France that are super fit

    • @Dennis4523
      @Dennis4523 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @M M you underestimate how much money can influence your success in any sport. Genetics play such a small part

    • @Dennis4523
      @Dennis4523 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @M M that’s the difference, there is a lot of those naturally gifted athletes, but for one reason or another they don’t get into the sport at a high level simply because they can’t afford to go to races or even out of their country. If a kid has all those factors you listed that you can get with money, that kid would be labeled as “the gifted” kid. And genetics doesn’t play a big role in cycling, it’s all about the person and how much they train their whole life

    • @Dennis4523
      @Dennis4523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @M M Yes I'm exactly saying that every successful junior who is rocking the 10,000 bikes and tt bike at his disposal is rich and gifted. Not the top athletes in the TDF. But whenever I see these "gifted" juniors. They're always white rich Europeans who had a dad in the TDF or a pro race and funds their kid's cycling career like crazy.
      It's no coincidence you don't see the poor athletes spring up at the junior level, they only appear at the later stages because they fought through the ranks in their country when they finally got access to real coaching and equipment.
      My argument was about junior riders if you give a kid TDF level coaching, diet tips, a routine, and a crazy expensive bike. No shit the kid will be some "gifted" athlete. That's my main argument here
      Honestly, do you think the kid in this video is one of those poor athletes who had a zero to hero story like some in the pro peloton? The kid is able to rent out a god damn velodrome and has an excellent Track bike with telemetry data. Who the fuck is under 18 and can afford this

    Ollie, I presume that denser air is easier to get oxygen. Is there an ideal point for air density to maximize oxygen and minimize air resistance?

    • @EJGilb
      @EJGilb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There probably is a crossover point but I think it's really quite thin. The men's hour record was done in Mexico at altitude for this reason, as was Dowsetts recent attempt and they still want high temps and a low pressure day even up there.

    • @The1trueDave
      @The1trueDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've often wondered about this - I'm fairly sure the density only has a linear effect on drag (ie it's not squared or anything - if you increase density by say 10% it should only increase drag force & hence required power by 10% for a given speed). Similarly there should be a linear relationship between density and the amount of oxygen you can take in - so surely they should cancel each other out?
      I mean I'm sure there's a reason the pros favour Aguascalientes but I just can't figure out how it works...

    • @jeffreywilliams3646
      @jeffreywilliams3646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@The1trueDave Could be. When Ollie started talking about atmospheric drag, I remembered a prior video dealing with performance drop off at high altitude. Now, "low pressure" at or near sea level probably ain't all that low, so I may be quibbling over nothing significant. But if oxygen is not relevant, why not build a track on top of Everest?

    • @gcntech
      @gcntech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a balancing act. At lower altitude, you can breathe in more oxygen and produce more power, but at higher altitude, you don't actually need to produce as much power to travel the same speed because the air resistance is so much lower. People much smarter than us crunched the numbers to try and find the optimum altitude for travelling at hour record pace, leading to riders like Campenaerts and Dowsett attempting the record at Aguascalientes in Mexico, close to 2,000 meters above sea level

    • @The1trueDave
      @The1trueDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gcntech Is it something to do with maybe breathing in more oxygen than you can use at sea level, so let's say you only use 90% of what you breathe in, but at higher altitude you don't have that surplus? That would then skew the calculation in favour of higher altitude... maybe...?
