Free Game Tutorial by a Grandmaster - Catan Universe

This is a tutorial video for the ‘free game’ mode in Catan Universe. If you didn’t buy the game this is the only multiplayer game you can play. The nice thing about it is: It’s always the same board. So it gives us an unique opportunity to create a specific strategy for this board.
I played 6 games with the strategy I created and I managed to win 5 of them. Of course you don’t have any guarantees when using this strategy since you don’t control the dice rolls and actions of your opponents.
So first of all let's analyze this board:
Wheat: 12 total pips
Wool: 11 total pips
Lumber: 14 total pips
Brick: 11 total pips
Ore: 10 total pips
So that makes ore the most valuable resource but overall it is a very balanced board.
Now lets see what spots have the best potential:
It is a three way tie between:
8-5-10, 6-5-10 and 6-9-10
They all have 12 total pips.
Out of those three it is debatable which one is the best but my choice will be the 8-5-10 because of the wool harbor nearby. Also it gives you flexibility on your strategy, you can still play tall or play wide. (if you don’t know what that means I highly recommend to watch my other video called ‘the 2 basic strategies’) In short: playing tall means you focus on development cards and cities and playing wide means you focus on roads and settlements
So we choose the 8-5-10 spot and aim our road towards the wool harbor. In my experience it usually stays open even if you are last in placements. If it gets taken you take the 6-9-10 spot since the 6-5-10 will be blocked.
For your second settlement there are a few options. Obviously it depends what is already taken. From best to worst, these are your options:
5-9-10 with a road towards the wheat harbor.
8-4-11 with a road towards the 3:1 harbor
4-3-11 with a road towards the 6 ore
6-4-3 with a road towards the 3:1 harbor
In most of my games I ended up with the 8-5-10 and the 8-4-11 spots. So we will use those as a starting position for the rest of the strategy.
In the early game your first priority should be to get to the wool harbor since your entire strategy is dependent on that harbor. Your second priority is to get a knight so you can make sure the 8 of wool remains open. Your third priority is to get to the 3:1 harbor. That brings you up to 4 victory points.
In the mid game you make a decision based on the objectives your opponents are aiming at. You go for:
4 cities and largest army.
Or you go for
2 cities, 4 villages and longest road.
Your first city always goes on the 8-5-10 spot. If you go for the longest road try to get to the 6-5 spot asap because it will help you to get the 2 cities. You always can use your wool and 3:1 harbor to get the resources you need.
So that basically is the strategy. The entire guide is in the description of this video so you can read it at your own pace. I want to repeat: using this guide is no guarantee that you will win every game, you can always have bad luck etc. This is just the best strategy in my experience to win most games.
