Start of the 2017 Comrades Marathon

- Brian captures the starting line traditions of the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. The national anthem is sung, followed by Sho'shaloza and the theme of Chariots of Fire. After a few moments of silence, a rooster crows twice and then a canon blast signals the start of the race.

My first attempt at the race, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I hadn't been overseas before much less been to South Africa, I hadn't started a race beyond 50km, I had no idea about the magnitude of the hills, in essence I was trying to basically "wing it" and barely made the Drummond cutoff calling it a day not long after. Still haven't finished this race yet (got to the foot of Polly's in 2019) and I've had 3 starts plus a DNQ in 2022 as injuries took a toll. More determined than ever to at least have another crack in 2023.

@@Malapile1 sadly not. i ended up with a half-serious injury which saw me stop running for three months. back at it now aiming to run Cape Town Marathon as my qualifier for 2024. let’s hope it goes to plan this time around.

I long to go back and run it again, but fear that may not happen, at least not for some time. Of the 99 marathons and ultras I have done over the past 15 years, Comrades (both up and down) remain a couple of the most life changing experiences.
@@grrooot21 i am in CANADA too now, hope we can run some marathon together. I would like to learn from you that how you managed everything and keep running. Of course not now but surely we will meet after this all done. Keep running. Keep inspiring

I have been unable to pin down where that specific recording is from myself. If you ever find out, I would love to know. Or else, I just have to go back to Comrades again!
