A good video, just a couple of (constructive) critiques - 1) more pics or videos of the very dangerous Phoneutria genus would be helpful. And 2) some words about the toxicity of the venom and its effects (especially on males) would be warranted, since that is what gives this critter its #1 spot on the most venomous spider chart.
Hey there! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave some suggestions! I absolutely agree with you in regards to number one. I wish I had more images of these spiders. As much as I possibly can I use either public domain, royalty free, or creative commons licensed materials. From time to time in searching for the critters on this show I end up at a distinct loss for images (and don't even get me started on video, ugh!). The most glaring example of this can be seen in our Sea Pig episode. I try to include anything I am able to collect while still not reapting images as much as possible (a personal pet peeve of mine). So that's the reasoning behind there being so few images, though I absolutely agree and wish there were more available. In regards to leaving out information about the... ehem... "effects" caused to males by this spider's bite - that was an active decision made on my part. I advertise this show as kid-friendly and thus felt it would be inappropriate to include due to the kinds of questions and implications it may raise (no pun intended!). While I have wondered if making the choice to remain kid-friendly has been a detriment to the process of relaying information, it's a choice that was part of the foundation in creating this channel and the limitations it precipitates has rarely caused an active omission on my part (this being perhaps the only example I can conjure). Plus, I figured if anyone looked up any other article about these guys they would figure it out anyway and another philosophy of this show is to encourage learning so that came into play, too. I'm still glad you mentioned it, though, as I feel it opens the doors to a more broad conversation about children and censorship. Thank you for the feedback! It's refreshing and I really, really appreciate it!
I realize it's too late for this feature, but there are several channels on TH-cam that specialize on showcasing reptile and arachnid collections, many of which have the BWS as part of said collections. For future videos, you might consider using snippets of them to enhance any segment with pertinent footage. I don't even think you'll need express permission since it would fall under fair use (though I know obtaining consent is usually considered appropriate and polite). Regarding the second issue, that is a concern. However, I think if you stuck with clinical descriptions and definitions and don't veer into luridness or gross-out humor, then you could still retain your kid-friendly audience. Facts presented as simple facts shouldn't obstruct constructive and interesting information sharing. That said, the ER remedy for priapism falls under the category of "medical horrors" (IMHO). In any event, keep making them vids!
Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'll have to be more vigilant in my searches as I come across more difficult to find creatures. Though, admittedly, there has been a pretty large learning curve with this show and even some episodes as recent as those posted within the past six weeks would merit from what I've learned. Haha! But, hey, gotta start somewhere, right?! I definitely agree that clinical descriptions are more appropriate and as I've progressed I've become more comfortable in the way to express certain natural happenstances of the animal world that may otherwise be crude when shone in the wrong light. I really appreciate the feedback!!
In Brazil, this spider is named "Armadeira", which roughly translates into "(one who) arms itself", that's because of the way they get up when threatened, as if "arming" its fangs like you would arm a crossbow. They're one of Brazil's only 3 relevantly dangerous spider species, along with the Black Widow and Tarantula. What makes them so dangerous is that they are extremely aggressive. Once they've gotten their front legs up, you better be running for your life, because the next move tends to be jumping on you for a bite! That's some nightmare fuel for you! On top of that, toxicity aside, their bite is said to be one of the most painful spider bites in the world, to the point you probably won't even be thinking about the venom if you get bitten. That said, if you do, go see a doctor immediately and, if possible, take the spider (or its squished corpse) with you! That helps the doctors identify the species to provide you the proper treatment!
I don't know why, or how, but when my mom was a kid (so, like in the 50's) my Pop pop brought home a huge bunch of bananas. It was so big that they had to hang it in the basement. She said that they find spiders hiding between the bananas all balled up, probably because they were cold. Although that old house is probably being held up by spiders by now, I doubt any of the banana spiders survived. She never mentioned any as big as this!

I work in a supermarket for about 2 years now, and the only insect in fruit i hear about are spiders in grape (yellow sac spider, twice) and a few in apple boxes ( huge boxes close tight full of apple) which are open in the backstore, away from customers. Never found anything in our banana tho
One of the oldest dreams I can remember was about a "banana spider". It was called a banana spider because it was colored and shaped like a banana and also the size of your foot.
I had a dream once about two people tossing a basketball back on forth in a store and on the basketball was a spider. I had never seen that spider in my life but somehow knew its name. I searched it up I found the exact same spider from my dream. (The name of the spider was The Huntsmen spider btw)
When I was an MIT for winco our guys found a small one in the banana boxes while capping bananas. They kept it for a few weeks in a cup on the shelf as a pet and didn’t tell us until it died lol
Saw one massive spider in a box of bananas while I was working. I slammed that box shut and chucked in the chiller for a couple of days. Till it was dead.
I used to work in the back at a Mediterranean restaurant when I was a teenager, one day I was helping the assistant manager bring in some boxes of bleach, I opened one of them and this HUGE spider came running out. My managers exact words were " Holy sh*t that's the biggest spider I've ever seen, uh you know, besides a tarantula" Anyway great video!
In high school the music instructor claimed that when he was working in a market as a teenager , that he encountered one. A woman screamed while looking through the produce and he saw one. But he could have just being fibbing
I used to work in produce at Meijer. Although, there is only one report, this could also be because people like me simply kill the thing and continue the work day. The older lady that worked above me said that from time to time we would get Panamanian Black Tarantulas and that when one crawled up your arm, it was the weight of the thing that scared you; a spider with the weight of a field mouse.
Some 40 years ago I found one of these spiders in the bananas at my local Ralphs.....despite its being incredibly aggressive! I was able to catch it and take it home. I put it in a terrarium but it died after a few days. I thought it was a tarantula and had plans to handle it and make it a pet but it was just so aggressive that fortunately, I did not.
Oh. The "Aranha Armadeira".... :) The bite isn't fatal... Well... If you aren't a child or elder with heart problems... ... And if you are a man you are fucked because you will have some... HARD problems...
I absolutely got one of these, from a friend who worked produce, it was in a box of bananas. He knew I was into tarantulas, so he gave it to me. This was in the 90s, in Canada, definitely a bad one, very aggressive, laid 3 egg sacks over the course of 6 months.😬
I live in south Louisiana and we have what people call banana spiders but their LARGE Orbs. I think they are beautiful and encourage them to stay on my small farm. If you leave them alone they will stay put and eat mosquitos by the millions. They are a very interesting spider.
U said that they would be big and take up almost all of the banana and that it’s not likely a Brazilian wandering that might be in your bananas however that does not mean that. It could be a baby Brazilian which would be a lot smaller than the adult versions
I don't know where you got the info but there's been way more people killed by this little pet unless you mean by the ones comming out of there home town but try telling them only 20 people died lol
The Brazilian Wanderer spider to me just looks like my common wolf spider here in Connecticut granted there's probably a more specific name for the wolf spider I'm talkin about but the ones I have around here are usually the size of my hand and I kind of have no choice but to kill don't because if I don't they will harm the dogs. Or it's mainly the dogs tried to go biting at them then they defend themselves by biting back at the dog
Me an intellectual, actually, the term bannana spider is a term to describe the golden silk orbweaver spider that came to America from Brazil when trading with bananas. One reason they are called bannana spiders, it's because of the black and yellow color some types of orbqeavers have. Also they are called bannana spiders because they lay their eggs in bananas and if eaten, can kill you.
Hmm... I couldn't find any information in regards to golden silk orbweavers causing human death; I'd love to see the source from which you're referencing that! Also, yes! "Banana spider" is a widespread term! It may be used to describe Brazilian wandering spiders and golden orb weavers as well as spiders from the Cupiennius genus or Hawaiian garden spiders (Argiope appensa) - and probably others, too!

all 3
Wondering because you never know where it’ll be next 😳
Just googled bananna spider and oh my... You and I are seeing two completely seperate things. It's like aliens but on your groin.
I have worked at a fruit distribution center, we had strange spiders in the fruit when it arrive from other countries, alive.
All I know is that I don't want them wandering in my home
The Giant crab spider is usually welcomed in homes since they prey on Cockroaches.
Ah, yes. The turboviagra spider.
We have giant crab spiders on our bananas here in Puerto Rico. They are sometimes called banana spiders. Huge but harmless.
Most likely a member of the genus Sparassidae. They were formerly known as Heterepotidae.
@@mescko they are certainly huntsman spider. They evolved to wait in very thin areas. Sometimes 6 inches from leg tip to tip.
Oh. The "Aranha Armadeira".... :)

We have a similar wolf spider here in North Carolona, but they tend to only stay at about 3 to 4 inches including the legs
the crickets (?) in the background make this hard to watch lol
Yeah we've really tried to fix this in our more recent episodes. We encourage you to try one!
