empire I think Kane is more valuable to the hawks then Toews. I've been thinking it science 2010. Kane came in clutch and then he kept doing well. 1pt per game at least. He's been carrying them this year too. I think that if Kane didn't perform as well as he did this season. Hawks would of been a wild card team. Also if Panarin was a "bust" like plotnikov, who really wasn't that bad, just didn't fit with the pens, they would of struggled a lot. I doubt they will make it to the finals this year. I was expecting more from Dallas last year but this year. I think they will go to the conference final vs the ducks.
i love it when he talks about his mom being nervous... "not sure what there is to be nervous about...". so level-headed & mature, even back then. one of the qualities that make him a great pro & great captain.
To hear what McKenzie said about Toews at the draft is unreal. He describes him perfectly.Future Captain and great in all 3 zones. I mean he is everything that Bob said and more. We are so lucky to have him in Chicago. He has lead the Hawks to 2 Cups and he is only 25. This is the guy all players should try to be. His parents should also be proud of the person he is also.
First time I've seen this edit of Toews being drafted in 2006 - All the expectations and kudos still all ring true to this day in July 2020 - Damned COVID
I would say that tie is pretty lucky. Drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks were he has become the Captain and a legend in Chicago sports. Won us a cup in 2010 and now leading the unstoppable record breaking Hawks in the 2013 Season. Keep it going Johnny
Blues would of had Oshie and Toews former UND Sioux teammates and good buddies. They would of been the Toews/Kane of St. Louis and probably would of won that city a cup. Toews would of been a 3rd or 4th liner in Pittsburgh because they already had super stars in Crosby and Malkin, so Toews wouldn't get that spotlight that he did in Chicago when the franchise was dead and there was only 2000 fans showing up to games. Chicago was the perfect fit for Toews to become a captain and a true leader. Three championships later, I'd say the other two teams missed out.
On draft day, it's smarter to go for the best player available to avoid busts. We now know how good Toews is so it's easier to make these observations.
Drafting both Toews and Kane was probably the best decision the Hawks made. Give credit to Dale Tallon for that move. 3 Stanley Cups in six years and numerous accolades later, the Hawks have turned Chicago into a Hockeytown.
Lol he said his "lucky tie" You can say he was definitely blessed with getting picked by the blackhawks! Captain serouis! A soon to be HOF an in the top 100 NHL players of all time! Easily the best all around player from this draft an his leadership skills are something special to Captain 3 cup winning teams man I hope he can retire a blackhawk same with kane
Staal made sense, and he had a good run in Pittsburgh before he was traded. With his family's DNA and his personal skill Jordan was a safe bet. Toews was a great pick for the Hawks
arcticmonkey3 Toews is a great player, but he wouldn't be the player he is today if he went to Pittsburgh. He would have got 3rd line time like Staal and probably developed his defensive game greatly like he is today, but who knows about his offensive game?
i think pens took a staal brother before toews. imagine if pens had toews on their team as well? fuck would shutter at the thought of that powerhouse lol.
***** They had Crosby and Malkin, so another 1st line center would just be unmanageable in a salary cup era. Jordan Staal was projected to be a great 3rd liner and maybe a 2nd line center. Not saying it was the best move, but they did win a cup with that core and Jordan Staal played a huge shut down role in the 09' run.
Wow, for some reason I thought that Toews had gone first overall like Kane did. While on the one hand you can't really fault the Blues or Pens since they drafted two very solid players, it's hard to imagine that any of them had the full package the way Toews did back then, especially on the character side.
"Born leader, future captain, this guy can do it all"
Pretty damn good statement by Bob.
+empire he can do everything except average 1 pt per game. (jk well it's true but )
OneTimer hah yeah, that is true. for such a great player it's amazing he doesn't score more points.

***** Probably score more if he wasn't line mates with Shaw and an aging Marion Hossa too.
OneTimer He finally did it this season 😂
Crazy how one draft changes the fate of an entire organization for a decade to come...what a player in his prime, very few come close.
i love it when he talks about his mom being nervous... "not sure what there is to be nervous about...". so level-headed & mature, even back then. one of the qualities that make him a great pro & great captain.
and that pick changed history along with one the next year
And the rest is history. 3 cups and counting.
Glad we chose him over Kessel

Him and Erik Johnson are so pure

7 years later, Captain, a gold medal in the Olympics and 2 Stanley Cup - This is coming from Leafs fan.... this guy is a legend
I would say that tie is pretty lucky. Drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks were he has become the Captain and a legend in Chicago sports. Won us a cup in 2010 and now leading the unstoppable record breaking Hawks in the 2013 Season. Keep it going Johnny
He even ties a tie like a boss.
Just to think the Blues and Pens could have had Toews.

+Cody Sawler Go Sioux!!! Imagine this line, Parise-LW, Toews-C, Oshie-RW. Would be sick as hell.
On draft day, it's smarter to go for the best player available to avoid busts. We now know how good Toews is so it's easier to make these observations.
That would be awesome to have Toews on the Penguins. Toews is my favorite player so that would be really exciting.
Rymo18 Could you imagine Toews as a 3rd line center-man behind Crosby and Malkin!!!??? The pens would have won the cup every year up to like 2018
Drafting both Toews and Kane was probably the best decision the Hawks made. Give credit to Dale Tallon for that move. 3 Stanley Cups in six years and numerous accolades later, the Hawks have turned Chicago into a Hockeytown.
Best lookin jersey in sports
Darn right
Not much of a change from his UND sioux jersey to The Blackhawks. (Go sioux)
2 cups later, a Selke award, a Conn Smythe…guess it is a lucky tie…and you're only 26?
Plus he won all those awards before age 25 pretty incredible
Dont forget the 2 world junior golds and 2 olympic golds
Gajen P Captaincy of the best team in the NHL
Add another cup
Boy if the Vancouver fans only knew what heartache this guy was going to cause them. What a pick. Captain Serious is the best
he's so perfect! so proud and look at him now what an amazing guy love ya tazer
Looking at it through a different lens, Chicago does really well with 3rd overall picks: Michael Jordan and Jonathan Toews.
Gale Sayers. Denis Savard
just think Penguins could have had Toews, Malkin & Crosby now..that would be sick
Incredible player and leader
Lol he said his "lucky tie"
You can say he was definitely blessed with getting picked by the blackhawks!

Omg he's so young then! Go hawks!
For the Blackhawks the 2006-2007 drafts was like winning the lottery ........WOW.
Great kid. Great hockey player.
i am not crying
His parents are adorable
That tie... really was lucky!
Love Captain Serious! That pick paid off in spades!
naturally guy turns out to be fucking BEAST. Him & Kane are gonna take LA tonight!
Staal made sense, and he had a good run in Pittsburgh before he was traded. With his family's DNA and his personal skill Jordan was a safe bet. Toews was a great pick for the Hawks
Good run? One cup on the heels of Sidney Crosby. Toews has two and many more to come....
arcticmonkey3

***** exactly. i agree 100%.
Even though that was the stupidest move for those two teams b4 the Hawks, I'm glad they didn't pick him
i think pens took a staal brother before toews.
