    LONGER BIO
Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a regular member of the Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). ~ Matt Collar

It is July 2022 - I have started watching your vlog posts in the last couple of months, and I find your information invaluable and inspiring. (Plus, I have found the best reading material because of you!) I just love your advice, thoughts, and adventures. You are this masterful technical wizard (to me) and I think I can get there but will be happy to make it halfway in my lifetime! Most of all, I like that you speak to the audience with pure intelligence. Even though you are the "sensei," you can break things down for understanding, but speak to us as equals. (I hope that made sense.) Intelligent communication is so important to me! I appreciate you and the information and thoughts you share with us. I keep playing the vlogs as new ones (new to me) pop up, re-playing ones I need to integrate more, and searching for topics I want to hear your thoughts specifically. Amazing stuff, Bob. PLUS, I am "of grandmother age" and love seeing the interplay of your family in the vlogs. It just makes you seem so much more "real," and teaches people that FAMILY IS SO IMPORTANT! This is REAL LIFE as a musician! Thank you for what you do!

It’s really refreshing to see how honest and vulnerable you are with your playing. I remember your senior recital at Berklee and it was standing room only! I say that because, to me, your playing is so “felt” and comes from a place of sincerity. Tone quality, dexterity, originality are all very evident in how you address the horn. It was evident back then, and is still evident now! Thanks for these vlogs, Bob! They are inspiring!!

that's crazy..I do the same thing about highlighting since the 80's...really cool to see what intrigued me then and, almost without exception, it became part of my thinking/approach today.

Boom - got a lot out of that one. Especially the highlighting thing. I mostly listen to audiobooks, but there's a "clip" function I really need to use more. I also realize I need to record myself practicing more often so I can listen back. Thanks Bob!

I video my solos on almost every gig. I critique/beat myself up on the way home. My conclusion is always that I’m overplaying. Among others. Thanks Bob. I always come away with something I can use.

Do you ever do the opposite and look towards the good aspects of your playing and try and expand upon them or analyze them as intently?

    Great Video Bob!
Do you have an advice on switching from alto to tenor? My big band need a tenor player, and I offered, but I can't seem to get a decent sound out of it. My teacher says to use a loser embouchure, but I still find it hard. Thanks

I requested and received "Positive Piano" for Christmas due to this video. I'm thinking the author owes you a little something for your endorsement!

Hey Bob, you have any guitar friends who do skype lessons? I'm a junior in high school right now and between jazz band, sports, academics, and volunteer work I honestly can't find any time to drive out for lessons. Also overwhelmed by the amount of people online who offer lessons, and frankly don't know if any of them are legit.
If you can hit me up with an email or anything I'll get right to seeing if schedules fit.
Also, in one of your vlogs you talk about just listening to a record straight through over and over again. Doing it right now with your guitar band, one of my favorite records at the moment.

Take Skype lessons from Carol Kaye. She's a famed bass player but is also a great guitar player. I've been meaning to take lessons with her but I ended up moving and needed the money. She's the real deal, look her up.

      @tunebean508 6 ปีที่แล้ว

They look like AKG 240's to me. Industry standard studio phones, although they leak a bit much for tracking IMO.

Anything closed back - I actually have a cheap pair of Phillips that I bought at Target that I use for tracking all the time. They’re comfy, don’t sound horrible, and don’t leak much sound.

If I start to critique my own playing that way I'd eventually have to quit! I get the point but there should be a fine line, right? Sometimes a self-pat in the back is needed as well, don't you think?

The nature of your self critique is evidence of the total insanity of humanity’s overall critiquing values and processes.
