I was there when Fred recorded his live version of this at the Elephant in Woodstock NY with Monte Dunn on 2nd guitar, Monte was Karen Dalton's old man and she preformed with Monte as well...
This is so...there are no words that can adequately describe how beautifull the interpretation of this song is, Eddi sings it with such passion. rosstyuk, I an so gratefull that you put this here on TH-cam. Thanks. : )
Eddi, you are so amazing. When I am driving and you're on the stereo, which is quite often, life is so good. Thank you for everything you have done to make this world a better place!
I'm in love with this woman since the Fairground Attraction era. Eddi, you are the best!...I just hope someone here in Québec city could invite you in our summer festival. Well, we are posting the organnisers the idea. Peace!
tues, 18th of sept, 2018- I know it is 10 years ago this was posted, but I just wanted to say, I included this version by Eddi Reader in a playlist I made 6 months ago, of many different versions of the same 'Dolphins' song by Fred Neil, and Eddi's version is truly wonderful and unique.
Let us not bitch about `who or where or how`.....Fred Neil....thank you. Eddi Reader...thank you for reminding us how great he was and how great you are!
dune mate.....that is amazing stuff.....I love fred's version of this too.......I'm from scotland.. my mrs sings eddi reader songs with me on guitar....she sounds lovely.......peace to another fellow sovereign human being
Why does everyone insist on starting with the "Saturday's Child" verse when Fred didn't? Also, there are some songs that just are "owned" by their authors...this is one of them. Nobody can do it justice but Fred. He and the dolphins are one now.
Where and how did Fred die ? I always lived in hope he would do something further -- he was and is unique. Here ( New Zealand) we have only had the last episode of the Sopranos which was the catylyst for the question. Damn I am sorry to hear that about Fred.
Brilliant!!!Thanks for posting this! Where's it from? Is it an Irish TV show? This is still one of my favourite Eddi recordings. People should check out her "Mirmama" album. Great singing with a Scottish accent!!!
No, Fred Died in 2001. Good stories of Fred and the NYC folk scene in Bob Dylan's Chronicles vol. 1. There's been a bit of Neil revival thanks to brilliant Sopranos 2006 "The Ride" episode with Christopher smacked out and "The Dolphins" as soundtrack.
Geez,ID.. that 's a little harsh, don't ya think? Also, really NOT accurate.. this does not qualify as New Age..it's Folk Music, plain & simple.Reader's take on the tune is, to be sure, a little eccentric,(vocally) though honestly felt.Still a tremendous tune.
Artist of the highest order. Astonished by earlier comments. Thank you, Eddi. A magnifcent masterpiece xxx
A song aided my tears through the pain of a lost love and new fatherhood.
I love you so much dear Eddi!! Your music is pure magic through my whole life. When i hear you sing my heart opens really wide.
the power, the range, the intelligence, the passion--WOW!
I played this in my car in March 1992 driving home after my son Ryan was born. Miss you x

Linda Ronstadt did the most well known version I'd say. 🐬
