"We have.... A CALCULATOR! WHOOOHOOO!!!!!" :D
Man you are so funny!
Ikr
"Honey, I found a really good deal on a crib for Sagan."
"Did you find it in the dumpster?.."
"Yeah, but it looks good. We'll just wipe it down."
Back at work, we had the exact same type of room. My boss owned the building but we shared it with 2 other companies. Each two or three months there was always some electronic scrap lying down for the garbage men to pick up. I'm proud to say that that was changed and that with the help of a few buddies we restore the ones that can be and we donate them to poor people. It's better than throwing them out anyways and recycling hasn't quite cached up to the science yet, in my opinion that is.
Electrical engineering hobbyists and proffesionals have to agree, checking out the electronics that were dumped out is one of the most exciting things
Damn, i could use so much of the stuff you find there. Like the monitors. Recently i got lucky and my school gifted me 10 old crusty 1280x1024 monitors. I threw away the white cases (more like yellow at that point), and have put 9 screens seamlessly together. They all work and are currently driven using 3 graphics card outputs and a bit of controller magic which needs to be optimized still...
Neat project and it would also work with your four monitors. You wont even need complex controllers, just get a good graphics card with enough outputs.
most graphics card comes with a display port so there would be just a dvi cables that are compatible so that means you need lots of dvi connectors
I love how he can find something good to say about everything. Even if he doesn't like certain parts of it he gave kudos on their display. I like this objective attitude.
I want this room too :(
And this bounty is not limited to office buildings. When I lived in a downtown high-rise apartment complex, I was able to furnish many of my friends in the suburbs with CRT TVs, old stereo amplifiers and those wonderful old tower speakers that we used as "patio systems." Used them outdoors in the spring, summer and fall, threw a tarp over the equipment in the winter and uncover for spring. Some of those discarded systems have contiued running for a decade and nobody steals a big CRT 🤪
You should do more of these EDD videos. I love picking electronics from the trash and fixing it. I hate when ppl throw out perfectly good electronics when it just needs a little TLC and it's working again. Stuff that isn't fixable is great for parts.
If you happen to be at a university, you can find absolutely ludicrous amounts of good stuff the day after student move-out day. When I graduated I stuck around for a bit and went through the dorm halls. We're talking laptops, coolers, nice desk lamps, monitors, UPS units, stereos... Mostly all working or with little faults that any one of us could fix with an iron and some glue.
A benefit of moving EEVblog to new HQ ! Those gadgets sitting in garbage room are thankful to you for resurrecting them !
thanks for reminding me to check the dumpsters of some companies in the area, 2 years back i scored a Panasonic wireless landline phone that only needed new batteries in the handset. i used that until i gave up the landline service.
You make us proud, Dave. Great video!
Those 204B monitors are pretty decent once you replace the dodgy caps. I got one from a buddy a few years back because it would take about 10 minutes to power on fully. $4 in parts and half an hour of time and it has been rock solid ever since.
That is a great PC and I love the display on that Canon calculator!
420...heh...
+Patrick Lee JackOfAllBlades "high-performance"
out of the garbage *pot*
tfw when you wish you could have electronic trash :/
A neighbour did come in during the copier teardown and remarked that was probably theirs! Seems happy that it got some use, and wanted to see the finished video.
Love the dumpster diving Videos! :-D It's always interesting to see what electronics people throw away.
I've also found so much fully working stuff people wanted to throw away.
If it's fully working and you really want to get rid of it, why not sell it for little money or give it away for free? At least it can be reused and not so much energy gets wasted for recycling stuff that doesn't need to be recycled.
I honestly can't understand this "throw-away society"
If it is completely broken and can't be fixed then it is time to throw it away.
I love all your videos man! Very informative and I am also a fellow Dumpster Diver, have ever thought of turning one of your DVI monitors into an HD Projector???
Great video, every day stuff in the eyes on a true professional.
Gosh, i wish i found stuff as good as that !
oh, last week i found 2 multifunction HP printers just like the Epson you have there. I need the power plug for one of them but the other works perfect except for the black color, gotta check with new ink.
TheSliderW last week i came across a worlplace getting rid of a ton of computers i took a dozen or so along with graphics cards ram etc..
realgroovy24 tech
omg, that's gold. Literally.
I wish i lived nearby some company's dumpster. I'd dig it every night.
TheSliderW to be honest I found myself pretty damn lucky that time there were too many computers (desktops/laptops/parts) to take to fit in my car though :(
haha, too true to be awesome (yes). I often feel sad that people throw away good stuff because, in France, a lot of the stuff i find is still in good shape and could be donated to schools or charity. Also there are people who would go smash up the dumped electronics to get the expensive parts and metals before in sometimes a couple of minutes after the dump... Hopefully, we also have some nice websites where people can post things they're willing to give away for free.
Concerning these Samsung Syncmaster 204B: I got two of them which didn't work. Turned out that they just needed replacement of all electrolytic caps and a soldered in 3A fuse, shaped like an 0207 resistor. They work like a treat now.
I have nearly the exact same monitor I love the tilt ability, I spun mine sideways and really love it.
those samstunk monitors are really good. someone threw a bunch out and I got 4 of them identical to them. all four had the SAME problem. bad caps on the power supply. After recapping, they all worked perfectly.
Beware the urge to unconditionally "Rescue" electronic things - you will fill all available space with stuff the might come in useful but never does (until just after you finally chuck it). At least stuff like monitors is fairly easily sellable. Dumpsters outside businesses are always better pickings than domestic as the value threshold is way higher, the more so towards the centre of cities!
I love these dumpster dives.
If anyone's wondering, the specs of a Dell XPS 420 are:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor 2.4GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
500GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 3650
Windows Vista Home Premium
I thorght they had the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT.
Sam Gates You know vista is the worst version of windows ever produced?
Sam Gates No,vista is literally the worst version of windows. It hogged massive amounts of ram, barely had driver support, was loaded with bugs, crashed almost 1 of every 10 program you open, had horrible security, the server editions were unreliable, etc.The only reason I could see someone liking vista, is them trying to be a special little snowflake, and be different from the masses.
Sam Gates ME is pretty bad, they may be on the same level. I'll never know though, since I went straight from 95 to XP.
Sam Gates WIndows ME is about the same as Vista. According to what I've been seeing, vista is worse.
Oooh, I so love dumpster diving, got lab power supplies, old laptops, a server, allsorts from doing that :o) Great finds Dave :o)
I wish I had the same room in my apartment full of this stuff.
I love to find working electronics in the dumpster :D
I use the laser-jet 1010 for PBC manufacture although the toner cartridges are more expensive than the printer here in England!
We have a place here called "Free Geek" where people and businesses can donate their old electronics. They salvage and reuse the stuff.
i think there's a cog replacement kit for it somewhere around the interwebs.... it's supposed to reduce the notorious noise that is caused by them vibrating when they wear off. i assume excessive wear could lead to jamming....
Geez. The people in your building are so wasteful!
not as much as you think, they know someone will get great use out of it like this guy.
bitblt I know right!
The 2 copiers use cheap and refillable cartridges. I have the canon version of that HP. The calculator probably has a design dating from the early 1980's, just as parts become unobtainable they move to sm versions, so that is why you see the oddities. The wire links are because the other side of the board is a carbon screen print with the keys, and the printer mech probably has been unchanged since 1970. I do the same, every so often I get nice goodies.
i wish i would have a garbage room like that near me!
It reminds me of that day when I discovered electronics dumpster in Garching Research Center in Munich. It was like christmas came early. Really.
Here some people sells those monitors for about 80-100$, which I consider is a total robbery specially since they're used, they get them for almost free from other countries and sneak them in the country illegally. funny thing, here you can buy a new one for 120-200$
It's common knowledge that a simple cap kit will bring those Samsung 204* monitor's back to life. Nice find!
Seriously where are those trash bins??
Is that a Windows CE Sidekick integrated into the top of that XPS?
In Romania if you find a crt tv/monitor functioning you are the most lucky man in the world!
Her now electronics devices are throw in the dumpster!
OH man i am envious !!!
I need to find cool dumpsters like that.
I used to spend some time in the trash room at my school, brought home some really great stuff and one of my better computers.. my mom made me stop though i wasn't getting rid of enough quick enough so my room kind of got filled with useful junk.. i think i had like 6 or 7 used screens at one time on my computer because i could.. i also got a really nice sever out one year needed a new PSU.. i fixed it up and used it in my game dev class for a bit.. also got some projectors...
Ohh i love videos like this man.....can you please do some more and kinda like an update from this one?
Would love it
5:48 I love how your know the first 12 digits of the number *Pi*
Geoxor He got the last 3 digits wrong, should be 358 (or 359 with rounding) at the end not 436
bassl0va i didnt realize
bassl0va I was also going to comment that lol
At least ;)
my cardiologist expects me to know pi to 20 decimal places to make sure I don't have Alzheimer's.
i wonder how hard it would be to salvage the printer out of the old calculators, and interface it to something else... pobably would need a new microcontroller. i suspect its a couple of dc motors and some ir photointerrupters + end-of-travel switches.
what would you reckon one could print digit-only, that would be slightly more meaningful?
I wish i had a garbage room like that!!! oh and that HP Laserjet 1010, I have one and its crap, always jamming.
it's like all the old thrown out toys on Toy Story that nobody wants to play with anymore
I wonder what do your neighbors think when they see their old junk on your lab XD
I SO want to find a place like this in my city.
wow the junk room is like a candy store where everything is free!!!!
My work basicly give me their old office gear, it's gotten to the point where I have to refuse..
One mans storage room is another mans "garbage" room. :)
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
those Lenovo and cheap Dell machines look like they would make quite good linux boxes with a lightweight enough distro.
That calculator board looks like having 1 layer of copper and 1 layer of graphite paint for the keyboard. That's probably why they used the jump wires and the not-so-SMD...
A P4? You don't want to use that, Dave. As the sysadmin of a student club I recommended against using them because they just suck power like there's no tomorrow. Members often forget to turn them off, and often leave things running that prevent it from going into sleep mode. Like world community grid, of all things! It costs 160 euros a year to run one. However, geeks don't usually get their way, so that's all we got to work with.
When my school buys new xomputer they throw the new powercables in the dumpster cause they dont bother to take the time replacing them, or even give them away.
Dave, is there any chance you can do a video on how a Tec Tile works? More importantly, what is on the Tec Tile. Thanks if you do.
If stuff gets pitched every week a new 'Garbage Day' segment might be popular.
When Winstar Communications went belly-up in 2002, I worked in the building where they were in Orlando and a friend and I took out their entire assets for the property manager. Plus they paid us a grand to do it. Brand new boxed laptops, pc systems, furniture, printers, color copiers, etc. Over the next 6 months I personally made over 70K selling everything I did not want to keep. Come to find out, this stuff was supposed to be liquidated for their chapter 7 bankruptcy. Oooooops!
If that eStudio 16s has a print server in it, it would make one great workgroup laser printer. Even if it's only 16ppm, it will have a much larger duty cycle than that Brother desktop printer.
spec's on the dell?
Every time I hear the word "Bodge" I think of Junkyard Wars.
Lots of times those lasers are thrown out because the toner is too damn expensive. Similarly, I have a few battery-powered drills that were thrown out because it was cheaper to buy an entirely new drill than it was to replace the old batteries.
I have had an xps 420 since 2008 still works fine.
i want that garbage room too!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow thats an nice score :) love that dell. i dumpster dive allot to but i dont find all that grate stuff anymore to many pepole compeating :)
amazing "junk" room so much good stuff :)
i have a xps 420 in my junk room, i blew the mother board and gfx card. im using the psu for my HPB on my ultimaker right now. its not great, it takes 20 mins to heat up, and when its hot, i can still pop my hand on it :(
I do not know why you call them bodges or aftertoughts. With big circuits, particularly when there are high amount of ICs involved (and not transistors and so on), single sided or doublesided pcbs its very difficult to sometimes to get a routing solution that does not involve some wire jumping across or the bloody vias.
Damn I own that exact Dell, great machine
Those little lenovos are cool, they are 2u high so they fit in a rack nice. :D
Ah how i wish i had such a "Garbage room"
Usually garbage room refers to a smelly dumpster with nothing useful at all
If you plan on using the Samsung monitors, do yourself a favor and open them up and replace the capacitors on the power/inverter board. Samsung is notorious for using cheap capacitors. When the caps go back the monitors starts to flicker, that's when most people throw them out.
I'd love to hear the status on the Syncmaster 204Bs. They're great monitors, but they have cheap capacitors which tend to fail on that model.
Nice score!
We have a recycle location nearby here with a huge electronics container. Soooo many times i've seen perfectly good stuff in there of which i'm sure it still works or can be fixed. But we're not allowed to take it... they insist on dumping it. Such a rediculous world we live in.
What that LCD on top of the XPS
you have a gold mine in that building Mr Dave wish i was near to your place
Finders keepers good work Dave
i cant get any of that stuff here in the uk as were not allowed to go to the dumps :( not gud
I saved an HP/Agilent 54810a 500 MHz scoop from being tossed in to electronics dumper where i work.
Was nothing wrong with it they just bought an upgrade so i got a nice freebie :)
That looks like the same CRT TV that I have here. Deawoo perhaps?
Nice video but I think you should make other
videos where you take apart something and show how
to test the components inside with the multimeter
and specifies the name of each component being tested
those monitors are majestic as fuck
in our school they use them too. i think they must be ridiculously cheap
Perhaps they redesigned a two-board design into one board and were not allowed to change the parts? Anyone has an idea why the strange parts in the calculator? Is it machine-placeable?
@EEVBlog:
About the SyncMaster monitors. It probably wouldn't hurt to replace all of their 'lytics. The SyncMasters, like other devices at the time, had the problem with the Chinese rip-off cpacitors plague.
What was your best/coolest find in the junk room?
5:28 that cupboard in the middle of the pile with the lamanex to has got makerbot stand written all over it.
Did the desk work? Or did it need a new hard drive?
I want a garbage room with such garbage too! xD
EEVblog the Sharp IR2422 is a 7 Channel Darlington Driver Array this is what i was able to pull up so you where pretty much in the ballpark with the driver part
9 * 123456789 = 1111111101 18 * 123456789 = 2222222202... for all of the numbers divisible by 9 up to 81, in which case an extra zero is inserted to the end(starting at 90). I am dyslexic, but math tricks really helped me stay interested enough to get through that inconvenience :). 9 has lots of neat tricks. It wouldn't, however, be a good stress test, multiplication of 9 is not difficult. I would think factorials would stress calculators the most/
Scrapping a perfectly usable calculator? You... you... you cannibal, you!
Did you check the Apple box by any chance?
so much useful stuff
Must rescue it all!
