Thank you so much for making this video. My husband is supposed to check these things, but we're getting older. I told him that there was a burning smell after my last outing, but he looked under the hood and said it was nothing. I followed your check the oil and this video and discovered that there was no coolant, when the van was cold. I also discovered that there was no oil at all in the oil holder. I put in oil until it showed up at the mark. I put in coolant too and will watch for any leaks, like the guys at the auto store said. I think it's just been a year since we added oil, so that was why. Today I drove him to the doctor and all over, and guess what? There was a little odd smell for about 15 minutes, but then it was gone! It was so wonderful that there was no more hot smell coming from the van. Your video gave step by step instructions, that were very easy to follow, thanks again :)

I’d love to learn to change my brakes and rotate rotors, etc. Wish me luck! Thanks!
Omg I am SO lucky to have found you and this video!! I know absolutely nothing about cars. I always relied on my stepdad to do all car stuff for me but he’s now living 8 hrs away. Thank you so much!! Your video was straight to the point and detailed. Very much appreciated
Thank you so much! I only knew how to put gas and windshield wiper fluid in car! Now I know how to check and fill my antifreeze. You helped me immensely. Great video, great instruction. Thanks again.
You do make a good point. If living in a well populated area, it can be taken to a shop. Others have to drive a long distance :( If there is low coolant in the vehicle this video will show people how to do it. In the video, I state several times to check the owners manual. Most vehicles have a level indicator on the coolant reservoir. If you open the hood, look at the level without touching anything, no harm can come to people :) Again.. READ THE MANUAL, lol
I know this is an old video but my Father or brother used to do that for me ALL the time. My Dad died in 2012 and I found my brother passed away in bed in April. I now have to do it all myself or bring it to the garage. Thank you!
Nice Video, good pictures, good explanations. One thing I would add is the cars that only have the reservoir (no visible radiator with a cap), if the reservoir is empty then you are very likely going to need more fluid than you'll use to refill to the cold fill line. To be on the safe side fill to the cold line, button it all up, run the car to operating temp. Once the car cools off COMPLETELY check the reservoir again to make sure it's at the cold fill line, it may not be so refill and repeat until you are at the proper level. You also don't mention that if you are refilling your cooling system more than once a year, you likely have a leak and should get the system pressure tested.
Hi I found you. It was very nice to meet you at Walmart. Thank you so much for stopping and saying hi and warning me. I checked out your videos they are very helpful videos very nice. So happy that your local. Hope We can keep in touch. Thank you again. 🙏Nima
A GREAT VIDEO, I LIVE IN MONTREAL AND IT'S FEB2020 I BOUGHT MY RIO-5 IN 2017 BUT HATE DRIVING SO IF I DRIVE EVEN 5K A YEAR THAT'S A LOT. IF I CHANGE MINE FOR THE FIRST TIME AT MY GARAGE, WILL IT IMPROVE THE HEAT IN MY CAR (NOT THAT IT'S BAD) BUT CAN THIS MAKE MY HEAT BETTER ??
To make your heat come out better, do a cooling sytem flush. In other words, flush the heater core & radiator out. Over time, both the heater core & radiator can buld up sediment clogging opeings in both resulting in slow flowing of coolant.
Helpful video- thanks. I’m always wary when someone promises “short & succinct”. E.g. here ~ 2 mins 40 secs spent on not removing lid if hot, etc. However it is important.
I have a Acura IXL 2017 and I have to add the coolant and bought a blue bottle just like that and it says 50/50. I’m planning on doing it in the morning when it’s COLD. I took my car to Sears to get oil change and they told me I needed the coolant because my car didn’t have any and my car has not been used for over a year. Should I still add the coolant that I bought or should I just take it to a place to do it?
When i bought my first old car i had to check this and all the oils everyday. It only last me a year. But awesome video because many people dont know how to do it. :-)
I have to admit I leave it all to my husband but hey thank you for sharing man! Would be a great tutorial to watch when I get to do it myself! Would be great if I could hahaha. btw, this tutorial gathered you very funny comments on the things you said yes!
Thank you bro you said the key words I was wondering about. If my radiator cap is off and the coolant is not topped off then I must add liquid to the top.
I have a 2005 Chevy classic and the temperature gauge started to get hot I turned the heater on and it started to go down a little bit. I know I need to check my coolant level. I can't find anything on a 2005 Chevy classic can you help
@@amiedegidio5156 ok, check the level when its cool by removing the black cap turning counter clockwise.Shine a bright flashlight inside the hole where you removed the cap while looking on the side of the tank. you should see a min & max lettering on it. you can have the coolant up to the max line, but not too much past it. Sir this is the best tutorial that I watch. Maybe I'm not the kind of person that you are talking about (jijijiji) but I like to check my car fluid to be aware. Thanks so much.
I'm new to this. So can you add it just to reservoir and not to where it says do not open if hot? I'm just asking because what if I need to really fill it up but then I have to go to store and get the coolant. Thanks for video.
Correct. As the radiator need the coolant, It will be taken from the reservoir. Some people prefer to fill by the radiator and the reservoir. To be honest neither one should be opened when hot. Not to say it can't be done. I have many times. Many seasoned mechanics have been burned while checking hot and removing the cap too quickly.. Not trying to scare you, best to let the engine cool down before adding coolant. If you need further help, let me know. :)
Thanks for the comment. Glad to help. Ohh BTW, were those coolata's in your live stream yesterday with your son? I liked the name of the chiropractor. lol
hi there, was actually looking for where to check water in a toyota isis 2005 if you could please help. Does this relate to coolant or antifreeze? Sorry im a total newbie with cars!
No vehicle uses just water. :) vehicles us a mixture of water/coolant. On your vehicle, the coolant is added to the left towards the back of the engine. Look for the white tank with a black cap.
@@m8t4lyfe Correct. the container should have markings on it. It's ok to fill it to the MAX level on the side of the white tank. You want to use pre-diluted coolant/antifreeze. That is the easiest to use.
Thank you this has helped a lot. I have a radiator cap, and reservoir in my 97 Tiberon and I usually have it done at oil changes. I have checked and added oil plenty. Just had one a month ago and the coolant is already at the low level. Gonna let the car cool and add before work in the morning 👍

Wow the comment section. Whats wrong with people these days. Good job man, your doing good about expressing when it is hot. These people hate because your doing good.
Thanks for this video! I'm a noob, and a girl, so all I know is cup holders and the radio! LOL! The heat stopped working on my '01 Ford Taurus....a buddy at work told me to check the anti-freeze. I looked at the side of the resevoir and couldn't see a liquid line at all, so that may be a simple fix. I'll open it in the morning when it's nice and cold. Your video gave me enough info to get started, at least. Thanks FiremanCV!
Hi thanks for the video..my truck overheated and I pulled over won't start..guy pulled over helped me said I had nothing in the radiator..so we put water to get me to the store...so my question is can I add coolant after putting water in it..thank u
Thank you SO much FiremanCV. This is certainly basic and helpful. Also thank you for letting us hear that there is more sustainable coolant available. Have a great day Sir.
Great video! Can you do a video or tell me how to check levels for the very popular 2000-2005 3.8 3800 v6?? PLEASE! Should I use dex-cool? I just bought my 2003 buick lesabre. Thank you!
The whole purpose behind the reservoir is so as the coolant gets low it can go into the radiator and pressure/ fluid can go back into the reservoir. Basically the fluid travels back and forth between the reservoir and the radiator as the coolant heats up and cools down. So,to answer your question yes it is important that you have coolant in there. if you can not see a line then you can just fill it up with coolant not water. however keep in mind if you have too much coolant in it, there's a possibility it will overflow because there is too much coolant in the reservoir.
paladin hgwt Antifreeze can be added at any time, provided engine is not hot with coolant cap on. Please be safe and read your operators manual/owners manual for proper fill procedures for filling or topping off with coolant. Not all vehicles are the same when topping off fluids. :)
Thanx for responding. I wasn't sure how hot the engine would be to crack the block or if filling it by it running would eliminate any airs pockets in it. But I get it.
paladin hgwt The only way you're going to crack an engine block is if the engine is hot while it is running and the coolant is added while the thermostat is open drawing the cold mixture into the engine. It can happen under the right cinditions, but rare.
new supporter, congrats on 1m views that's awesome!. the only thing i know about cars is where the gas and keys go. great tip too to wait until the car cools down.
I got a ford tempo...V6. does it have a drainer on the engine block as well?when I fill the radiator with coolant #1 Do I need to turn on the engine?#2 Do I need to turn the heat on?#3 Do I need to keep the engine running with radiator cap off until the engine reach operation temp? and shut the engine off and put on the cap
Thank you so much that's very educational you earned a subscribe! I doubt vw/audi has separate radiator caps just the reservoir. I can just fill through that?
We just refilled the coolant in Chevy Cruze. As the tank /reservoir was being filled it got emptied through the hole where the valve needs to be put back as soon as the reservoir gets to the maximum level. We noticed coolant flowing down the bottom of the Chevy. We put the valve back, dabbed the sides near the valve and drove the car home. It seems fine except that from the bonnet front smoke is seen which is a bit concerning. Is this smoke there due to the coolant that flowed out of the valve hole??
I completely forgot about having to mix it, you saved me. lol now, I just need to take my car to get its electrical things checked. It's giving me bad readings for gas, unless the update I did on it somehow expanded my tank. lol Thanks for the info, definitely helps me who is a first time car owner and should've learned all this about 2 years ago when I bought it. Haha
JJ IN THE BUILDING just go out and tinker around with your vehicle it's not to hard most things are covered in your owners manual if you dont got that you can download the PDF for your car
Hi, I have a Chevy Tahoe, it's old but runs really good. (1999). My husband just died, I never had to do this before, so is it hard to add the Antifreeze to my car?
I have a 99 Honda Accord I ran out of coolant completely, my car got hot and I stopped immediately no damage was done. Didn't do any maintenance as it wasn't required. I added coolant first to the jug to the max mark then added fluid to the radiator reservoir until it was full. Didn't know if I needed to bleed the radiator reservoir of air even if I didn't do any kind of maintenance other than releasing the two cap lids. Haven't started the car yet because I didn't know if I was supposed to bleed the radiator reservoir even if I didn't do maintenance. I'm trying to be as specific as I can to give you an understanding. if you could please give me your input that would be really awesome.
I never had a dad to teach me things like this, so thank you.

Wow the comment section. Whats wrong with people these days. Good job man, your doing good about expressing when it is hot. These people hate because your doing good.
Nice Video UpLoad Thank you For Sharing
Do you have to flush every time you put in coolant or is it ok just to add coolant when levels are low? When should i flush?
sebb sibb flush every 40,000 miles.

Thanks FiremanCV!
what happen if you add more antyfreez than the required?
@firemancv plz answer this!
wow ... very good tutorial for beginners ... hats off sir
Is it OK to change your coolant when the vehicle is hot though?
Sometimes you have no choice but to do it hot. Cover the lid with a good amount of towel and twist slowly until you don't hear the opening hiss.
Hi thanks for the video..my truck overheated and I pulled over won't start..guy pulled over helped me said I had nothing in the radiator..so we put water to get me to the store...so my question is can I add coolant after putting water in it..thank u
Thank you for sharing your knowledge o the world !
Thank you!
my reservoir is opaque and I cant tell what level it is at. As long as the radiator is full does the reservoir matter as long as it isn't over full?
The whole purpose behind the reservoir is so as the coolant gets low it can go into the radiator and pressure/ fluid can go back into the reservoir.
Basically the fluid travels back and forth between the reservoir and the radiator as the coolant heats up and cools down.
So,to answer your question yes it is important that you have coolant in there.
if you can not see a line then you can just fill it up with coolant not water.
however keep in mind if you have too much coolant in it, there's a possibility it will overflow because there is too much coolant in the reservoir.
Happy New Year! Nice to see you on GreenbayWacky's live stream.
Do you turn on the engine just before you add the anti freeze to the radiator?
paladin hgwt
Antifreeze can be added at any time, provided engine is not hot with coolant cap on.
But I get it.
paladin hgwt
The only way you're going to crack an engine block is if the engine is hot while it is running and the coolant is added while the thermostat is open drawing the cold mixture into the engine.
It can happen under the right cinditions, but rare.
new supporter, congrats on 1m views that's awesome!. the only thing i know about cars is where the gas and keys go. great tip too to wait until the car cools down.

"If you have a job" hahahhaha the comment section is hilarious. Thanks for the video though
You know a lot about working on vehicles I like this video pretty cool my friend. 😊
what happens if you over fill
answering my own question: nothing bad but if ya fill it up to much it will over flow when the engine warms up.
redwolf gaming and mechanics I did this on my other car and it would leak when engine got hot.. Or if you drive the thing will be leaking..
I just topped off my 10th gen civic with prestone asain blue coolant instead of using honda type 2. Am I fine or should I flush it?
i hear if you remove the cap while it is very hot, you officially become a REAL man?

We just refilled the coolant in Chevy Cruze. As the tank /reservoir was being filled it got emptied through the hole where the valve needs to be put back as soon as the reservoir gets to the maximum level. We noticed coolant flowing down the bottom of the Chevy. We put the valve back, dabbed the sides near the valve and drove the car home. It seems fine except that from the bonnet front smoke is seen which is a bit concerning. Is this smoke there due to the coolant that flowed out of the valve hole??
whats the difference from coolant an antifreeze?
Same thing.
daniel cortes
Miles Tyson what?
Don't know why it did that. My mistake
Lol okay
I completely forgot about having to mix it, you saved me. lol now, I just need to take my car to get its electrical things checked. It's giving me bad readings for gas, unless the update I did on it somehow expanded my tank. lol Thanks for the info, definitely helps me who is a first time car owner and should've learned all this about 2 years ago when I bought it. Haha
Your Welcome :)
can you do a video of 2013 chevy silverado like changing sparkplug, oil filter, oil change, radiator flush, a/c etc... it would be awesome thanks 👍👍👍
Tom hanks
What the....
What's with the Tom Hanks thing? He sounds NOTHING AT ALL like Tom Hanks. What Tom Hanks are you people talking about?
Embarrassed the hell out of me I don't have a job but am training to be a heating and air tech
Really clear and concise. Great vid and easy to follow. Made sure to drop a sub. 🍻
I can't get my cap off
Joan Strine I learnt today how lol.
It's like a medication lid. Push down then twist.
Kid friendly.
Coolant for radiator is the same as we put in coolant reservoir?
Vishal Patel good question
Yes
