Michael Hoffmann you're right. I'm not saying he's the only actor who could've played Negan, but Negan is very hard to pull off. It's such a beautifully written character and they needed an amazing actor for that role. JDM was, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best options, for a lot of different reasons.
The governor was more of a hurt human being who kind of tried to shut down his humanity because he lost so much ....that's way more reliable to most people than a sociopath who is making sexist humiliating jokes while smashing people's heads without even blinking while brain matter splatters everywhere ....
The Governor was more relatable yes but they are both amazingly complex and human characters. The best way I would describe what Negan is... he is a hardened survivalist and manipulator with a god complex. He clearly was a troubled person before the apocalypse and with the downfall of society he realized that people like him... with his skill set and charisma, the own the world. People need a god. They need an idol, a deity to look up to and fear. And people need rules. Rick and Negan are kind of two sides of that. Rick is a reasonable and caring leader of a smaller, closer nit and easier to maintain group. Negan is a brutal and commandeering leader of a much larger group that is very hard to feed and control. They both have done terrible things to keep people alive. Just Negan is very much more confident and capable. Rather than working and reasoning he takes command of everything. He has his security in the amount of control he has.
The negan in the new season isn’t the “negan” that is previously known he still the same person obviously but his mental state and view of the world has shifted drastically in certain ways.

I agree with Jeffrey on his Negan persona. Rick and the group killed about actually 40-50 of his people and all Negan had to do was kill 2 of Rick's in return in a pretty brutal way. I can't forget any of his words in the speech he gave to Rick's group. "I do not appreciate you killing my men. Also, when I sent my people to kill your people for killing my people, YOU killed more of my people. Not cool, not cool. You have NO IDEA how not cool that shit is." And so it's like Rick and the group can't accept that or see his point there. As much as the group has struggled surviving dangerous people, a lot of them not bad people, this is where they screwed up and fought a battle that wasn't their own to begin with and consequentially underestimated the Saviors. On the other hand, Negan coulda made it easier for them by picking the least popular dude in the group to kill or figuring out who will snap when he picks the wrong person or examining each character's subservience. And he is a little too passive in the demands to other communities and Rick's group is the one that will take him down. Negan is the kind of villain you'll love so much because he's soo badass but hate at the same time because of the things he does. I'm really glad they didn't kill him in this season and I hope he'll be around for a while because he's amazing and Jeffrey is such a cool guy!

In 2 years, I’d never came across this JDM interview. Nuts! I just adore JDM’s portrayal of Negan. And JDM himself seems to be a really good person overall. Great actor but very relatable as a person.
JDM brought the walking dead back, after season 5 I was only really watching it for completion and then Negan came in and it brought an entire new atmosphere to the show and really brought it back for me. JDM portrays Negan really well and he is an amazing actor.
This is guy is so super-talented, the way he talks when he's in character playing Neegan, the way he emphasizes words and how he changes the tempo and flow of his speech...impressive, hilarious, and intimidating all at once
The first time I watched this interview, I was so happy that he actually gave an explanation for that leaked Maggie death scene, then he said someone else died and I heard from a spoiler source that Aaron was the other one he killed in that particular take. It's fascinating that the cast and crew are very well aware of people spying on them to leak spoilers, so they'll purposely film fake footage and allow it to be released in order to throw us off.
Good stuff. I've kept coming back recently because you guys are really good at letting the actor talk while still kind of guiding the conversation. It's nice to here some of what's on their mind.
Negans character is smart for many reasons. He knows how to push people, how to pick out their weaknesses. He makes a lot of mistakes, one of these days (episodes), someone is going to catch on.
JDM is so naturally funny and intelligent, It is so comforting to see an actor so genuine and real. I could listen to him speak all day, he is so entertaining and interesting.
JDM rockin it as Negan. Its just too bad the show is starting to lose viewership this season. I can understand why. all key players have been cut out most of the first half so heres hoping the 2nd half drastically changes. Other than the ratings have been; i've been loving this season. JDM is pure gold of TWD.

Negan is the kind of villain you'll love so much because he's soo badass but hate at the same time because of the things he does. I'm really glad they didn't kill him in this season and I hope he'll be around for a while because he's amazing and Jeffrey is such a cool guy!

JDM brought the walking dead back, after season 5 I was only really watching it for completion and then Negan came in and it brought an entire new atmosphere to the show and really brought it back for me. JDM portrays Negan really well and he is an amazing actor.

I found negan so attractive the whole series it was impossible to hate him
The first time I watched this interview, I was so happy that he actually gave an explanation for that leaked Maggie death scene, then he said someone else died and I heard from a spoiler source that Aaron was the other one he killed in that particular take. It's fascinating that the cast and crew are very well aware of people spying on them to leak spoilers, so they'll purposely film fake footage and allow it to be released in order to throw us off.
I like him actually, he looks and sounds really like a fun guy to work with

JDM is so naturally funny and intelligent, It is so comforting to see an actor so genuine and real. I could listen to him speak all day, he is so entertaining and interesting.
JDM plays in two of my favourite shows.. SPN as John, and TWD as Negan

I can understand why. all key players have been cut out most of the first half so heres hoping the 2nd half drastically changes. Other than the ratings have been; i've been loving this season. He is really such a good, sweet guy. And really funny! A great actor aswell, I am so glad he was picked for the role of Negan. It's interesting, mesmerizing even, to watch him in this role of one of the biggest bads TWD has seen so far; but I hope fans remember to separate the character from the actor haha.
