Thank you very much for shedding light on this topic. Unfortunately, our regulatory bodies or politicians won't even try to find an answer or implement any restrictions to benefit the safety of whales. But with intelligent customers(tourists) can demand an ethical whale watching tourism. We all know that they need money to survive so I'm pretty sure that if tourists demand a better way of whale watching they'll adapt to that. It will be a slow but effective way to answer this issue. At least those boat owners will try to maintain a safer distance between them and whales which is good. I'll be happy if the same thing can apply to the safari jeeps inside national parks. It looks like things are starting to go outta hand. Thanks again Budgeteers.

Thanks guys! I went whale watching in Marissa 2 years ago and while it was thrilling seeing the whales, it did feel unethical with SO many crowded boats, I'd never seen anything like it. Many were also chasing the whales. Regulations really do need to be put in place and aheard to. I'm from Australia, and we have lots of whale watching here with humpback whales, there are strict laws and distances in place to protect the animals (not saying it's perfect by any means either). Sri Lanka needs to look at doing this if they are going to protect not just the animals but in turn the tourism around them.

I am from Sri Lanka. Sail Lanka does Responsible whale watching, as well as ""Raja and the whales"". I have only been on Sail Lanka yet, so they never chase. And their boats are diesel- wind-solar powered. So, don't be put off yet. Also, Might I suggest that you should have mentioned to the boat operators they were being irresponsible. Please do inform. They just assume tourists want to chase these magnificent creatures for a photo op - while the experience is better if you don't chase.

Hey gang, such a great video - I shall be in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks in Feb 2020 nd was researching whale watching as I think these animals are among the most beautiful on earth, I was concerned with some of the treatments of "tracking" them as in wherein one gets literally a swarm of boats attacking these majestic animals, much like your video in the game park when one driver saw a leopard.
Is there really a solution? I will be mostly staying with friends in SL, hopefully I can get so see these animals in their natural environment - without hordes of tourists, yet SL needs and wants the tourism $$$ IDK.

I did the same tour in the low season (Sept.) it cost about half that, there were only about 3 other boats, and they were only half full. but the seas were choppy and we only saw 1 whale for a few minute before they told us "Um, we must go back now, or else we won't have enough fuel."
They also skipped over us with the coffee until "Coffee finished", and we declined the "vomiting pill". Spent about 2 hours throwing up everything in our stomachs.

I have been vegetarian for three years but even if i wasnt, it doesnt matter. what, so if someone isnt vegetarian theyre not allowed to speak out about feeling uncomfortable during an experience? We're each allowed to follow our gut feeling and if someone who wasnt vegetarian didnt feel right about this and chose to not do it or chose to speak out about it then that would also be completely ok. this channel is about experiencing and learning from those experiecnes. everyone is trying their best to do right in this world and instead of just calling people names maybe itd be better to support peoples small steps in the right direction and have conversations when necessary.
