Why don't y'all just open a small section in ur store for rentals only. I'm sure y'all got extra doubles of games and movies. To keep it going... Just a thought
So glad u said something about your retro rick Facebook account getting cloned and someone trying to scam us on your behalf would have been nice that u would say something on your video warning us about this but u didn't and if it wasn't for someone to call the store and trying to get to read a post I don't know u would have known what the f was going on !!! :) Thanks next time I should just take the scam and win a fake PS5 and lightsaber I knew i wasn't talking to u and posted about it, I don't want anything, I want u to warn others !!
I wish we had a store like this in the Pittsburg, Ks. region. Our retro video game store in the mall isn't there anymore. Also, I wish we had a video game store that cleaned and fixed consoles....I would love to work there and do that! A game store ran by folks that actually care about gaming and the customers - what a concept!
We recently stopped into Retro Ricks on a family road trip to Florida. The first person that we saw when we walked in was Rick himself. I told him that we were big fans of his channel and his store and he took about 25 minutes out of his day to show us around the store and just chat with us for a while. He comes across as a funny, kind hearted and genuine guy on camera but he is even more so in person. Truly such a great dude. The store is packed with incredible things to see and experience, and we could have spent all day there. The prices are great and his staff is super cool and friendly. We will definitely be back! Rick is a real one, and it was the cherry on top of a great family vacation!
I live in Portland Oregon. We have Movie Madness. It almost went out of business a few years back, but were saved by a local crowdfunding campaign. Their memberships also include passes to the Hollywood Theater monthly here. I honestly believe it's the reason it's survived so long. I've been lucky in getting some physical media recently for dirt cheap at a local restore and Friend of the Library bookstore (CDs and DVDs mostly). I can buy CDs for $1 with no scratches. I never would have dreamed of this when I was in high school. You're doing quite well for yourself in the midwest Rick. Carry on.
I hate people that "brag" about stealing everything, but if they didn't offer physical games, no way in hell would I buy something I can't sell or look at.
Yup. Privately owned stores can follow the money, too. As long as we have gaming shops like Rick's shop, physical media will never truly die. Then, once normies see how much digital only sucks and how much we enjoy not getting things mod'ed or deleted without consent, it'll slowly trickle back into popularity. It's a cycle. The same thing's happened with vinyl and VHS.
It'd not about physical media. You have been able to buy things with a few clicks of buttons for decades. There is no need for physical stores for media.
Being a tactile human, I will always cherish physical media. There's nothing quite like the touch and smell of older items. Just feels good to the soul. ❤
Hell yes! For books especially, I LOVE the sound of turning a page, the feel of a book's covers in my hand. Knowing that that tiny little corner of cultural media is forever part of my personal collection and library is also a huge comfort. I love just browsing through my own libraries at times. With games especially, I love reading the back covers, or even studying the artwork on cases. Have you seen some of the Pokemon stuff Nintendo's done for their game cases in recent gens? Some beautiful art there. It truly is food for the soul.
You are safe as long as you keep doing what you do. You passions and innovation has carried you this far with the help of a great team that you have assembled.
We are a family of four with six Switch consoles. We buy mostly physical copies so that they can be used by everyone. There were times where we bought physical and digital, like Animal Crossing during the pandemic, but ideally we buy physical. Not only can they be used by every console, but also holds some trade in value if we ever choose to trade in/sell. Additionally, when the Internet isn't working or when on the road, physical copies of games are super important for kids.
@@brendanmoran397 So certain, are you? They said the same thing about Vinyl. It's seen a recent resurgence in popularity. They said the same thing about VHS once DVD and then Blu Ray kicked in. Our local library still has a vast movie and game rental section. Additionally, they offer streaming services like Hoopla and Kanopy (movies/tv shows) for free.
I think as long as you’re here and your store is open we ain’t got nothing to worry about. I love physical copies myself that just means your place will be the place to go.
Hi rick. I love watching your Vlogs and your game store looks so inviting, comfy that makes your inner child come out. Wish i could visit this place. Keep gaming
You have physical media, you could have a rental section too. When you see a niche market open up, in your specialty, best to jump in and fill the vacuum. Cmon Rick, give the newbie kids something fond to remember!
Me and my wife drove up there recently and been a couple times before that. This store is hands down the best game store I’ve ever been to! We love the selection of GameCube and all the other retro games it takes me back to when I was a kid every time. If nobodies been your missing out also the staff is amazing
Many people forget they can check out DVDs, CDs, and possibly Blu-rays from their local library. Not to be too specific about where I live, but I live in St. Charles County, Missouri. The libraries here offer quite an expansive selection of DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs, and even video games. Years ago, they would even get brand-new releases on both DVD and Blu-ray the same day you would find them retail. Since this is all at the library, they are free to check out.
Our public library here rents dad's, blue ray, plus video games for ps4, ps5, Xbox one and Series, Switch and they have some wii and wii u also. But outside of that no. All of our other places that rented physical media are long gone and it makes me sad.
There will still be physical media on DVD and Blu-ray but only in limited editions, and as for the new Nintendo console, it will also have physical games and be backwards compatible with the Switch.
There is a Redbox outside the Dollar General I work at and we get people, (almost) everyday, renting from it. Mainly because the internet in the part of the county that my store is located at, isn't exactly the best you can find.
In some of the smaller towns they rent dvds at the gas station I've seen. I live in the Midwest. Also physical media is the only way you actually own it. I still buy cds to support the bands I like.
Thank god for gaming shops. Even if companies refuse to produce anything new, we will always have our physical media circulating. Even if it's on a secondary market. And the even better news? We have DECADES worth of the stuff to explore. It's a huge library of fun and enjoyment that doesn't have to worry about being modified or deleted on a company's whim.
My physical media collection in 2500. Streaming compression is usually terrible looking and can be gone at any time. Downloaded movies you pay for can also lose the license and be gone and you don't get paid back.
I wish more games stores also dealt in physical movies. Also records, especially video game records. A one stop shop for physical. They would get all my money
Your local library still has a good variety of movies and games that you can borrow! Some near me even have whole consoles alongside a ton of other things you can rent. Check out your library for stuff if you're on a budget or just want to try before you buy. Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card!
Depends I guess. Look at vinyl records today. Its out selling CD and has decent shelf space even at Walmart while theres no CD at Walmart. 4k Blue Ray is still doing ok but thats mostly cause of home theater buffs.
I am a big fan of physical, the reason being is that i love getting something in my hand, the artwork etc so i'm sad that its being pushed to downloadable only.
Physical media isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I sold my DVD collection years ago, but found myself buying blu-rays soon after. I only buy/collect the movies and TV shows that are favorites of mine. Streaming services pull titles from their platform all of the time, but I will always own what I buy :)
I still feel another generation until SSDs get cheap or find a way to compress games . Also I think 30/40+ gamers still love our physical media, looks awesome!
Mid 30’s and I just gave in earlier this year with the digital ps5. I feel like physical media will last as long as the copies sell at the big stores like Walmart Best Buy etc. I know Best Buy is phasing out physical media so we’ll see. I’m really into music also and it’s weird not having cd’s or albums for a lot of artists projects. But as long as the artists get paid and we can keep alive the retro world we’re good.
Physical will have a space for a while as long as one of the three support it or a third party releases a disc drive. But as time goes on it will become more of a niche market.
I think it's possible that if physical holds on or increases in popularity it will be from a singular chain - Gamestop already has the most stores for such a thing as well as used games making them have the biggest stake in keeping physical around. If decent pre order bonuses were even more common or every collector's edition could only be found there then that would make it even more of an incentive. I used to love using redbox, I live in Oregon and visit the Oregon coast often, and internet is often horrible. So I would go to the local Walmart and rent a few movies for the nights when I'm laying in bed. Definitely a sad day for physical media :(
Rick in 2005 I wanted to open a store much like yours in a way. The idea was to call is EXP. We’d hyper focus on in store experience with all things geek from vintage, toys swords etc.. To keep the space viable can you add a geek pub that is video themed? Think scum and villainy in cali. Then the other idea we had was an octagon with stadium seating hosting tourneys for counsels, table tops, or poker.. Just some thoughts to build on the attraction
I think the consoles know that physical games are popular when it comes to gifts. No-one wants to give download codes as presents. There will still be a market for it
New physical media is almost dead… BUT I think there is a nice niche for the retro market when you’ve created such a nice atmosphere that customers are willing to travel to see. I’m in California and I’d make a point to stop at your store if I was ever in Arkansas.
The Switch cartridges have been my favorite things to collect, more than stuff from my childhood. I’m up to 50+ games and it’ll be 100 in the next few years.
I'm a physical media fan, I buy game physically when I can but I also adore movies. Buying blu-rays certainly isn't a mainstream thing anymore so while I can't walk into Walmart or anywhere really to find movie releases, I can find mainstream titles (most of the time) online for a solid deal. But the boutique blu ray world is absolutely booming, heck some of them even manage to release some movies put out by Netflix! I don't know if games could ever get that kind of equivalent but I can only hope.
Up until a couple years ago, I still seen some little mom and pop convenience stores still renting dvds and blu rays. But perhaps they are done renting now too.
Love your gamestore setup, wish you lived in Europe tho, nostalgic PAL games are much more beautiful than the NTSC boxarts. Not sure why, but it's like this for all systems... N64, Xbox, Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive (genesis), DREAMCAST! (DC Pal games are amazing!) etc.. That's why PAL games also hold much higher values... Don't even get me started on PAL Sealed Nintendo games with the red Nintendo tear strip 😍
Physical movies will still be around a while, there are plenty of boutique labels still doing releases. If the console manufacturers say no more disc drives, that's it for video games, sadly
I think they will stick with the cartridges but maybe like higher memory like they'll hold more? They have to? I think they ditch joy cons too in favour of half a controller or bigger controller
Since streaming services have started 'editing' movies I've been going for physical discs. And get annoyed when a game isn't available on physical media. It's sobering when your internet is down, but luckily I have a fall back system in place. NES and blu rays!
I have a feeling the switch 2 and its new games will be all digital and you will be able to play your old switch games only on it physically. I just dont think Nintendo would want to go through the trouble of making two cartridge slots, one for the old and one for the new games. When you think about it, it makes sense
First they got rid of Manuel booklet in video games then they started selling digital copy of games now they want to get rid of physical copy all together. This sad times

I don't mind stopping my collection at ps4 & xbox 1. I could buy and sell from generation 1 til 8 and I'm good.
Yes as physical media is still huge in Japan, which is the switches biggest market
Since streaming services have started 'editing' movies I've been going for physical discs. And get annoyed when a game isn't available on physical media. It's sobering when your internet is down, but luckily I have a fall back system in place. NES and blu rays!
My name is Michael, didn't even know I was starting work in 2 weeks. Got a place I can sleep? It's a 12hr commute one way.
Casual $100 vintage Razorback hats just sitting in the back
I have a feeling the switch 2 and its new games will be all digital and you will be able to play your old switch games only on it physically. I just dont think Nintendo would want to go through the trouble of making two cartridge slots, one for the old and one for the new games. When you think about it, it makes sense
I can see the physical media maybe going up in value if there ain't no digital for it or if you got physical media collectors
First they got rid of Manuel booklet in video games then they started selling digital copy of games now they want to get rid of physical copy all together. This sad times
