Excellent video mate! I always think the Dandy is underappreciated, my brother got it weekly while I got the Beano but I've kept hold of all his old issues. I'm glad the annuals and summer specials are still going.
Yes, I agree, In ireland, it was a bit rare, beano was really our only option and occasionally something random like the Topper or the Beezer. If you ever want to do a video discussion, let me know 😅I've been a big fan of your videos for a while, and I hope to see you do more British comic stuff soon
@@theashtubereviews Ah I see, I never really got into any of the other comics (apart from reprints in Classics from the Comics). Aw thanks mate! @@theashtubereviews Thanks a lot 👍 And yeah I think a video discussion in the future sounds like a good idea 😁 I'll keep you posted on what videos I have coming up.
I’ve grown to vastly prefer The Dandy as i’ve gotten older - After half a decade of reading Beanos i needed a breath of fresh air lol Funnily enough i got 80+ comics for Christmas this year, almost all of 1997 and 2000 (including the issue reviewed in this video, how fitting!) I also got the final issue as a sort of “late gift” today. As for my favourite characters from the comic, Desperate Dan and Molly are my top two. Dan may not be that funny the majority of the time, but he’s the most popular character.. how am I not supposed to like him lol. I like Molly because of how bloody of the rails she is, it’s probably one of the only british comics i’ve ever genuinely laughed at
I’ll agree the non child brat characters did come off as refreshing after so many years of the Beano and this comic for example had some fun cheeky innuendo jokes and weirdo characters I liked. I’ll agree Dan is iconic and never should have been removed from the cover in my opinion, maybe they felt this hairy man character wasn’t appealing to kids but they should have learned from hoot a weird baby wasn’t the answer. I would have crazied Molly up and made her the cover star, your already dying so swing for the fences.
Great video! The Dandy is my No.1 favourite comic and glad to see you did your research on it. I own 60% of the Dandy's comics and nearly all the annuals, it's a really great comic, much better than the beano in my eyes and I've done a couple videos showing some of my collection 😊. Hope you do more dandy videos and remember you can keep a dandy handy 😉
Me either 😅 my toppers are all in my parents' attics, so I googled, and that was the highest quality picture I could find. I think I'll do a what is the Topper or Beezer next year. They are almost obscure, such little information about them online compared to Dandy and Beano
At least Corky the cat wasn't removed entirely when Dan replaced him as the main mascot. Biffo the bear however has basically disappeared by this point. He stopped being a regular in the Beano about a decade ago I believe, and was last scene in the Beano in a cameo about six years ago.
I think I read somewhere that his artist/writer had died, and that was part of the reason they retired him. They brought him back at some stage in very short strips for a bit. I love looking at old comics of Biffo, from certain angles he is nightmare fuel to look at
Maybe Viz would make an interesting video? It's a comic line in the same art style as the beano. (Well, more the retro 70s art style of Beano anyway). But is designed for adults.
I would love it if you covered "It's a Wonderful Life" for Old Timey Movies. Maybe next Christmas? (Don't take this comment too seriously. Obviously only cover video ideas that you want to).
Yes, I was hoping to do it this Christmas, but no time :D It's one of my favourite movies, so I am sure I'll do something with it at some stage, even just a rego review
@@theashtubereviews You might wanna also look at Beano Annual 2024 cuz David Sutherland drew for it and Beano aged up old characters like Ivy the Terrible, Smudge, Pansy Potter and Brought back an Ex-Bash Street Kid member.
@@kingrgames I think I may own that one already, Down the line I need to do all the annuals, I don't know if I do them one buy one or just one long video looking through lots of different ones and picking out highlights
The character Blinky was originally known as Colonel Blink, from the Topper. Back then, he was a middle aged, be-spectacled man, often wearing a bowler hat, but he always had bad eyesight. & I always thought the mums in the Cuddles & Dimples strips were milfs (or milves, if you prefer - ref: Professor Lando).
@theashtube261 there's literally no more room. I'm in a one room flat, & it's a fire risk to have this many. I have them floor to ceiling, on shelves, in cupboards, & I'm even paying a little extra to keep some in the attic. The landlord has given me 6 months to cut down, so it's not really my choice to sell them, i'd much rather keep them in a storage locker, but there's nothing like that around here.
Duane is kind of dressed like James, specifically the James of the calamity kind. Oh, duh, probably same artist. I think my brain is actually rotting from reading this stuff
Bananaman is a comic hopper. Actually us weirdos in america call that a brother-hopper (someone who dates brothers in a family), but Bananaman hops comics not family members.
Us the Irish prefer Beano. To be honest, most of The Dandy strips here are not good as The Beano. The Smasher is just Dennis and Roger combined into one character.
I'm American, and all these comics seem really weird. Way too many of them are centered around bratty children in a similar art style, many of them wearing red and black. At least with Bananaman and Dangerous Dan McGrew or whatever his name was I could tell them apart. That "Injun" joke would not have been allowed by the editors in the 90s in an American comic.
At some stage, they just decided red and black were the perfect colours for everyone 👌 😅 Bananaman always stood out to ke he is so different to every other strip with a really fun outfit
Sadly, the Dandy has become even more of a ripoff. I never read it, but one time when my uncle brought some Beanos’ over from the U.K, there was the 2013 Dandy annual, and we saw even more. The Banana Bunch? Basically the Bash Street Kids, and they weren’t even trying. It has the fat one, the dumb one, the leader one, the twins two, the pet, you get the point. The Smasher looks like an ugly Dennis, Beryl the Peril is basically Minnie The Minx, and so on, so on.
@user-yr8mu1ce1m I think they were trying to capture that beano rebelliousness would have been better served to have had a much different identity than lamer versions of beano characters
Good video but I don't think the comic you went through was the best representation of the Dandy. Winker Watson strips are great. Most issues it was Creep who does some dastardly deed. Also Molly and Growing Paynes weren't the best strips. They were ok but not great. The Smasher is awesome in his own right, imo unfairly compared to Dennis and Roger as a cheap knockoff. The smasher isn't really a menace or a dodger, he just smashes things, sometimes intentionally sometimes not, but some strips are hilarious and the art is consistently fantastic during the 90s at least. I'd agree with cuddles and dimples to a point, but they do grow on you and their splash pages of chaos are fantastic. The cat and parrot are like strips within the strip. Desperate Dan was normally solid until they screwed around with him in the 2000s. The one thing the Dandy has on the beano is the strength in depth of characters not seen in the comics you reviewed. Bully Beef and Chips, Jocks and Geordies, Richards Snitch, Mutt and Moggy, Dinah Mo, Corporal Clott, all excellent and superior to the likes of Molly and GP. Also worth noting the Dandy was selling 50,000 copies before they revamped and cast it's death knell in 2004. The current Beano does not even match these sales, so God know how it stays afloat. I'll be surprised if Beano is still around by the end of this decade.
Thanks for watching . With smasher, I meant more his look,he looked like a dennis and Rodger amalgamation.Ah that is too bad about molly only being average I really enjoyed her strip here. I was a bit tongue in cheek, but I did enjoy winker Watson 😅 a lot of the art in all of these were great the mid 2000s on the art everywhere really went down i think across the board. I Hope the beano survives, It would be sad to lose the last comic
I was disappointed. I was actually hoping for a Bully Beef and Chips and a jocks and Geordies but The issue I picked just didn't happen to have them.I will make more dandy videos so I will get to them eventually
