  • The doughnut washer is the key to fixing this leak. You will also need a metal fixing plate as shown in the video. They come as a kit.

Great video. The bolts are always a headache, I don’t think I’ve ever managed to simply unscrew the wing nuts and unfortunately they’re not always easily accessible. When they inevitably need replaced pay a little more and get stainless steel. Smear them with a bit of grease.

Something to look out for as I have just found out, is to check that the bottom of the cistern is flat or is countersunk. Mine was countersunk, meaning that it was not sealing right with the plate not pulling into the surface to seal. I got past it by doubling up on the flat washer on the outside aswell as inside on the syphon!

So, Maybe would it be the siphon sal that was leaking? If not, hard to see where water could come from to go past the 'doughnut'? I'm guessing the water inlet or the overflow could also be a source of a leak? Maybe some food colouring in the sistern would show where any leak was originating... if from the water inlet, no colour. If from the sistern contents then colour in the leakage?

I don't know what Ideal Standard were thinking with the design of the cistern on my WC. The bit where the valve/syphon thingy exits is recessed about 2" but with an indented area just a bit smaller than the metal bracket, so you can't attach that using the nut to the threaded part of the valve. I replaced the valve and rusted through metal bracket some years and managed to get it leak-free with a 10cm length of PCV pipe that extended the exit of the valve down through the donut. I ended up using the metal bracket to just hold the donut in place, but it was otherwise not connected to the cistern. That was just held in place by the wall screws. Recently the flush broke and so I replaced it with another unit, but do you think I can repeat the trick and get it to not leak when flushing? Can I heck. At least nothing was rusted this time, but tomorrow will be the 4th time in as many days, taking the cistern off and trying to figure out what's going wrong. Wish me luck. There won't be a 5th time... I'll buy another toilet and it won't be Ideal Standard. bastards.

My toilet has a lip around the edge of where the cistern sits. I've put a new donut on but when put back in place the cistern touches the lip thus preventing the donut forming a seal. I've placed it flat side down and that seems to have worked. So many unexpected issues with simple jobs

Hello, if my basin screws go through the basin itself,do i still need to fit the metal plate? I ve replaced the doughnut washer but still have a leak when i flush and it s coming from between the toilet and the basin. Also the new cone shape doughnut seal is smaller than the old one maybe that s why?
    Thank you?
