  • Atlanta is one of the most culturally & historically rich cities in the United States. From it's impact on civil rights history to it's present day dominance over Hip Hop, Atlanta's influence is felt. In this episode of Streets by VICE, we'll be traveling along Ponce de Leon Ave. Although it's not that long of a street many Atlanta residents consider Ponce to be the heart of Atlanta. The street houses many of the city's most iconic landmarks, and passes alongside it's most notable neighborhoods. During our travels on Ponce we'll meet everyone from civil rights leader, to street artists, to councilman, to some of the most influential hip hop producers in the game, as they educate us about their Atlanta.

Atlanta is really a...unique place. Being one of the only cities that has a large black/minority population of middle, upper middle suburbs like most white cities. It is also one of the most culturally diverse cities in America, It is a great place to grow up, being exposed to pretty much all walks of life in one general region: Rich, poor, white, black, latino, asian, jewish, islam, christianity, etc. You grow up with a pretty realistic look on the world here right off the bat..
The city is one of the biggest influences on music, sports, and the civil liberties we all enjoy and benefit from today all around America. The city is still growing to this day. Even though it is not perfect (like fucking Singapore or some shit) It is almost the polar opposite of what northern black cities like Detroit, which seems like it's forever deteriorating. Funny how the world works. The black cities in the "racist south" seem to be doing far better than the black cities in the "liberal north".

I remember joining the Army in 1978, government put new recruits in the Claremont Hotel until there were enough to shuttle us to Ft Jackson...
First time in a strip club @ 17 because back then 18 was drinking age and they turned blind eye to underage patrons. In those days they really put on a strip show at the Clermont Lounge and last time I saw a naked woman for the next 6 months
