    Delaware fun facts: Unlike the majority of what is now the United States, Delaware was once a SWEDISH colony called New Sweden! New Sweden was made up of settlements on both sides of the Delaware Valley, with the first being in what is now Wilmington called Fort Christina. New Sweden didn't last very long as it only existed from 1638 to 1655 due to being conquered by the Dutch. Delaware is named after the Delaware River and Bay, which in turn was named after governor of Virginia, Thomas West, Lord De La Warr by Samuel Argall in 1610. While Georgia is known as the peach state, the first state to produce peaches commercially was Delaware! That's why the state flower is the peach blossom!

    My family used Avelo to fly from Redding, CA to Burbank, CA in June 2021. We were very happy with our flights. We weren't expecting any frills, but they delivered what we expected, they got us from place to place safely. I'm sorry that they lost your reservation for a seat with more legroom. I booked one seat in an exit row for my husband and the row behind him for me and the kids. This worked perfectly. We were all comfortable. I was sad to see that they have now limited the number of flights to and from Burbank to one day per week, but on the upside, they also fly from Redding to Las Vegas, NV. I would still fly with them again.

    Enjoying your videos! I've flown from New Haven which saves me a lot of time and hassles than heading to the NY Airports; Flying Avelo you have to 100% know what you're getting and what you're not. Hit one of their sales, bring a carry one non-rolling bag to avoid the bag fee and you can get to anywhere for less than $99 on the East Coast. I can say so far, the people are much nicer that work the flights and on the flights but then again I've not flown on any other point except to Florida.

    Love your enthusiasm for air travel. When flying (especially for leisure) I consider my airline choice an important part of the trip. I enjoy flying but with an airline that really wants to make that flight as good as it can possibly be. I've been a loyal Delta Air Lines customer for decades primarily because I live in Metro Atlanta and because I think Delta is a well run airline. Flying on a low cost carrier concerns me because I'm concerned that an airline might be cutting corners with safety. I'll be following how Avelo does in the near future because I have family on the Delmarva Peninsula. I look forward to your next travel story.

    • @MirzaAhmed89

    I did the inaugural from ILM (the other Wilmington) and it was a good flight from ILM to HVN. Cabin crew was amazing, and our pilot was a local from Wilmington. For a low cost airline to come into an airline mostly served by regional jets, they make it well known that Avelo is a good alternative, still to this day.

I use a roller carry on that meets their personal item dimensions, let them choose the seat, and don't check baggage. Although I live in and fly out of Greensboro NC, I lived for 21 years in Wilmington, Delaware. As you point out, WIlmington is only 20 miles from the Philadelphia airport so it has always been difficult for an airline to serve Wilmington; particularly since most of the state's population resides in New Castle County which encompasses Wilmington. During my tenure in Wilmington the only times I flew out of the airport there was when I had to fly on private planes owned and operated by DuPont.

    Avelo is very popular in New Haven, CT to places in Florida. You are stuck either going to NYC airports or north to Hartford, CT. Plus New Haven is expanding their airport as they want more airlines there.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, CT's 2 commercial airports, New Haven and Hartford's, are both expanding. In the past, I had thought that there are a few states which don't have cities major enough to contain a commercial airliner airport, I'd wondered that about Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and North and South Dakota. But Burlington Vermont, Manchester N.H., Portland Maine, Fargo N.D., and Sioux Falls S.D. each have a commercial airport. Delaware was the only state which didn't have a city with commercial airliner flights in and out of there. However, most of the above mentioned cities' airports don't have international flights, not overseas to Europe anyway. Most probably have flights to Canada, especially since each of those places are in the northern U.S.

I needed to take the MetroLink train from the airport to a station in the Santa Clarita Valley (we do this so my daughter doesn't have to drive in traffic). There was an off-duty flight attendant taking the same shuttle and train, to get home from working for several days. I didn't know how to activate my train ticket and asked the FA for help. It turned out she works for Avelo, an airline I had never even heard of.
    I had a most enjoyable conversation with the Avelo FA, she was personable, helpful, and so kind. She told me about new bases opening up, expansion plans, and how she enjoys her job. If she's any example of the type of employees the airline hires, I would fly the carrier any day.

    Interesting seeing an Avelo review. They recently started flying out of the small airport near me. I would've been able to get tickets on Avelo round trip to FLL for a family of four starting at around $675. They were significantly less expensive than even Southwest and I wouldn't have had to go to one of the larger airports.
    You know for a roughly two hour flight, I'd be completely fine without full service snacks and IFE. I usually bring a book or newspaper to read. I also usually don't get any of the snacks from the flight attendants.

    I flew Avelo from Sonoma County Airport to Burbank back in November after flying Breeze for the first time from Tampa to Charleston and back a week earlier, and I would have to say that Breeze gave me a much better experience all around. Our Avelo flight was an hour late (not their fault; the plane came from Las Vegas, and there were severe thunderstorms), but at the gate, they only had a cardboard sign saying which gate they were flying out of. The ground crew was not friendly; however, they were very good at keeping us up to date on our flight. Once onboard the FAs were ok but once in the air the head FA said if you call us we will give you water otherwise there is no service spent the whole flight all in the back gossiping about their fellow employees (I was in the second to last row on a half-empty plane, so I heard every word). We then ended up having the hardest landing of my life which they blamed on the airport (however, I grew up flying into BUR and have flown into it probably 100 times and never had a landing like that.

    Frontier only started serving Wilmington in July 2013 with flights to Chicago-Midway, Houston, Denver, Orlando, and Tampa. Fort Myers was added later in the year. Then in June 2015, they announced they would leave Wilmington, only for them to make the announcement in January 2020 that they wanted to return...I think you can see where this is going. Due to the pandemic, it was delayed but they returned in February 2021 before leaving once again in June 2022. If that doesn't show how cursed Wilmington Airport is, I don't know what will. And that's just a PART of the curse, as another airline that tried to tap into Wilmington is Skybus Airlines on March 8, 2008 with flights to Columbus and Greensboro...the airline ceased all operations not even a MONTH later on April 4!

      So, I know someone who works for Avelo and my understanding is the routes out of ILG are doing great. In fact, Avelo would very much like to expand their operation at the airport. However, the airport is limited by the amount of space available in the terminal - two flights cannot board, or even DEBOARD, at the same time, because there's only room for one planeload of passengers and only one wheelchair-capable ramp. The demand is there, but the infrastructure is not up to par.

      sounds like Worcester, MA which has had huge issues trying to get service but always ends up having flights cut!
      and the sad thing is the airport is operated by their competitor airport so there’s zero incentive for them to get airlines since they have them already in Boston

    • @DaWolf805
      @DaWolf805 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bostonrailfan2427 Worcester has a different issue, which is that it's foggy like 200 days out of the year at that airport. From what I understand the facilities there are actually quite nice, and Massport has surprisingly done a decent job at making the airport suitable by building autoland-capable infrastructure to counteract the fog. Unfortunately, most low-cost airlines are not certified to autoland, because it's expensive and complicated to get (and stay) certified. So the airport will never be as popular with the low-cost market as it could be without that, and mainline airlines tend to abandon secondary cities easily whenever times get tough for them.

    Jeb, perhaps your “Lounge” rating ought to take into account the fact that an airline flies to a smaller, alternate airport? It’s far nicer to have a quick trip through security, etc., than a lounge to recover from a nightmare security queue and avoid the hustle and bustle of a large airport (like PHL in this case).

    Avelo should take some of the former SWA 737 300s. As of now, like 15 of them are parked in the desert in near-mint condition. The last time I was on one was in 2017, and it was really well kept for an older plane.

    It was about time for all of us who live in southern Delaware( Lewes, Rehoborh Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, ocean View, Fenwick Island, etc, etc) to have an airline that we can count on, and stop having to “travel” to commute for two straight hours to Philadelphia international airport, or two hours and 30 minutes to BWI in Maryland, or even three hours or more to Reagan international airport in DC, or Dulles international airport in Loudon County Virginia.
    What we, all residents living in Delaware also need tremendously, is to have what Pittsburg, PA has: an international airport terminal together and next to an air force base(Pittsburgh international airport), specifically in Dover(Dover air force base),the capital city of the state, which is geographically located exactly in the middle of the whole state.
    That’s pure convenience for everybody, and no one in the whole state has to commute or travel to a different state’s International airport to “catch a plane” anymore.
    Thank you so very much for bringing this nice and very informative video to all of us, and thank you for keeping us all well informed with your great videos.

As you stated it is no frills, as long as you understand that it is fine, i will say the extra $$ for more leg room is well worth it, i am 5' 11" just like you are Jeb, and i did take one flight like you did, basically without legroom, now we pay for the legroom

    First of all, Jeb. I have loved all your videos since the algorithm said "Hey, check THIS out" a year or two ago , and you have made the bucket in which resides my 'bucket list' almost too heavy to lift (although Antarctica didn't make it into the bucket because I can stay home and be cold) . Aside from that, we here in Central Orygun got Avelo service to Burbank and Palm Springs a year or so ago. For quick winter getaways with carry-on backpacks and no concerns about inflight food/alcohol service (not to mention our short legs 😁), it really is a very inexpensive way to travel. Doesn't work well for connecting flights to somewhere else, but I don't think that's what they were going for, anyway, so I'm fine with that...

    Flew Avelo from Wilmington to Fort Myers Feb 10th. A quick Friday-Monday weekend trip. The airport experience was great. Easy parking (only $8/day), and was through security in minutes (took longer to take shoes/belt on/off than it did waiting in line). The waiting room after security (there is only one), is nice. Plenty of seats. But the only amenities are 3 vending machines! I'm used to several restaurant choices for breakfast, etc. NOTHING! Luckily I brought some snack crackers, and I got a bottle of soda in the vending machine. Glad I did, as there is NOTHING given or sold on this flight. No water, NOTHING! So keep this in mind for anyone considering. Bring food with you, and plan to purchase any liquids out of a vending machine. Found it odd that the inaugural flight included water (bad tasting or not).
    When planning my flight, I chose a seat with increased legroom and I always choose a window seat. I love looking outside. I chose 8F as it was both an extended leg room seat, and a window seat. To my surprise.....Row 8 is the ONLY row in the plane WITHOUT a window! Come to find out that it is the row with reinforcement rings around the fuselage to protect the cabin in the event of an external engine failure. Flight crew was very nice, as was the overall experience.
    Flight home was better as row 4F had two windows!
    My issue with the company is that I've now sent two emails with pictures of my non-existent window that I paid extra for. There has been ZERO reply to these emails. I was nicely asking for some sort of reimbursement as I did not have a window. Where as if I paid extra for an aisle seat.....every row has an aisle! So...... @Avelo Airlines ..... Please check your emails and at the very least, reply.
    Keep up the great content Jeb!

    Was that price one way or round trip? The average price for flights for example from either NYC airport to MCO averages $59- $79 one way… this includes Southwest which gives you all the baggage allowances and then Delta and American where you have to pay $30 for one checked bag. So if the fare was one way it’s very high, if it was RT then it’s about average. Cant compare from Delaware since no other airline serves it.
