There's nothing wrong with Coventry, I'm guessing it's just not a huge metropolitan. If the producers and fil studio think they're gonna make a lot of money on a movie, they'll usually open in a big city, like London. If they're worried they won't, they'll open in smaller towns. By jabs, they simply mean "hits" or "insults". That is to say, Paul is implying that Alan has insulted Coventry too many times now, to back track and pull his foot out of his mouth.
