    I really do miss Sim City. The new one had a great feel and had a lot of elements to it that had the potential to be a truly great successor to the Sim City series. EA totally throttled and killed this series and it should be held as a beacon to EA's history of taking over successful studios and running them into the ground.

      Everything EA touches turns to crap. Not because of the studios, no they have great studios that make good games (Some of them at at least). It's EA trying to find a way to monetize the game, rushing them, scrapping them when they take more than a year, it's absolutely disgusting.

    This game had some great ideas. The modular buildings system is fantastic, and it has a lot of art assets. There are a few things this game does very well. Sadly, the tiny build areas really killed it, and Maxis never dealt with that issue. I suspect that if the game had been a success, EA/Maxis wold have dumped a ton of DLC for it.

    Sim City was nice looking but the small city size was such a handicap that it completely negated all the positive aspects of the game.
    I thankfully picked it up when the offline mode was added because if I was forced to be online all the time I wouldn't have given it the time of day.

    • @jmitterii2
      @jmitterii2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You literally couldn't build a quarter of the various possible things the game offers in one city. Even specializing in something like a college town, it essentially took up all the room.

    • @LoneWanderer101
      @LoneWanderer101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jmitterii2 Tell me about it. I once built a gambling city and it was in debt because I didn't have enough room for more residents and commercial areas (for hotels). My giant super expensive casinos were usually empty.

    • @Vespuchian
      @Vespuchian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the city size was limited as much by the assumed-online nature of the game as by Glassbox. Being able to track, even in summary, what other players were doing live must have put a limit on what the engine could have handled while building your own city. I can't even speculate how much Glassbox could have handled if the game had been designed for offline regional play like SimCity4 from the outset but it must have been an improvement.
      (shakes metaphorical fist at EA for ruining everything)

    • @draggy76
      @draggy76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The small size isn't really a handicap.... In fact there were mods made for it (like any game) that expanded the city size. and the fact every map you play on has multiple cities you can make making the building creations for each region nearly unlimited makes it actually better then some. Sure cities skylines has boarder extensions, good an all, but working within an area shows how creative and skillful you can be, How much of a problem and situation solver you can be. Which is what sim city was always about. People are just spoiled these days by games that give them massive sandboxes they can play in and only end up using a tiny percent of it.

    • @LoneWanderer101
      @LoneWanderer101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@draggy76 Buddy I get what you're saying but the fact of the matter is that Sim City FORCES you into its small city sizes. It FORCES you to build other specialized cities. Before the patch it FORCED you to always be online. It did all these things for little to no reason .
      Cities Skylines is better because it doesn't force you do anything. It gives you an open space and some tools then tells you to go crazy. Your imagination is all you need for CS. It sets your limits and your goals.

    There are a couple of things SimCity still does better than Skylines: the music, obviously, the way it selectively muted certain tracks when you went through the menus was genius; building plots weren't restricted to a grid and bent with the roads and came in variable depths; speaking of roads, being able to draw squares and circles (as well as auto-connecting roads when intersecting) was a huge convenience; power and water was auto-built under the roads, which is one of the annoyances from older versions I was glad to see go (shame about the loss of subways though).

    I guess the idea of the tiny spaces was to encourage players to set up multiple cities to provide each other specialize resources which also in turn encourage multiplayer. If you have one big self-staining city you would never need them, so they just simply blocked you from ever making them bigger. I can see their mindset, but I think this was a major flaw from the beginning of the development of the game. I.E trying to encourage multiplayer as much as possible, but the majority of city managers players play alone anyway so it was not something everyone wanted and it was never optional because it is always online so they were always desperate in getting people to use this system that they over compensated for it. I’m sure there were other factors to like EA wanting to stop piracy and other stuff, but I image this is what the developers wanted to do with the game, and unfortunately this is the type of system that doesn’t work for a city management game or at least being forced upon its player base.

    I actually loved Sim City, many hours on the game, just the limited size of your city you could build was my only down part. One thing I noticed from Sim City to City Skylines, Sim City residents actually sleep at night, the road are nearly bare, which gives it a feel of realism, City Skylines the there is major traffic at 2 am, eeh the little things make a difference to me.

    I actually really like this game and still play it to this day. I understand the frustration for those who want larger cities. But that's not how the game works. Each city is meant to be built with its own specialization and all the cities are supposed to work together.

    • @bryancordeiro410
      @bryancordeiro410 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I get that, and recently started playing again. However even when playing with multiple cities, things dont work. Ex: I had a mining city/industrial/low wealth next to a city with higher wealth and lots of commercial. Theoretically, workers should commute to my city to work in factories and high tech spaces, while my factories shipped freight to them. But in reality, I never had enough workers and enough shops to send freight to. This kills the experience. I wish this game had a better connection online, allowing changes in city to feel real time and changes in cities act realtime and not a 15min delay. Everything that should work such as commuting and traveling for school in the region doesnt work consistently, which sucks. But who know if they evey release a new one with similar gameplay and better connectivity and multiplayer interaction.

    My first experience with this game was paying loads of money for a pre-order, and my second experience was having the game be online only and unplayable at launch. I felt cheated. Once they fixed their servers and I could actually play the game, I initially liked the game for the ability to upgrade buildings and the usual Sim City humor. My last experience was when I rage quit after being unable to get the power and water agents to actually find all my buildings. I can believe that they limited city size to keep the agents from having this problem. Cities Skylines had the advantages of some improvements to computers, learning from the failures of Sim City, and being developed by a studio that had previously worked on Cities in Motion. There probably won't be any city builders with realistic populations represented by agents until mid-range computers have the power to model millions of agents, or someone expands upon the more spreadsheet-like model of the older Simcity games.

    Although the game has mány flaws, including 'cannot connect to the servers after 2 hours of playing', 'unable to load city after working on it for DAYS' and roads that somehow cannot be straight while the [square roads] option is enabled, I still enjoy playing it after 5530 (!!) hours hehe.
    It's actually always on when I don't play other games. I have a music studio at home and mostly during producing music, the game runs in the background.

    and another thing: i love how you can add on to buildings and low key customise them
