The One Day More reenactment was even better than I could have hoped for! I think you'd get on with the BBC series if you get a chance to watch it. Much more of the book plot but no convent digressions!
This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for reading the book so I don’t have to. You deserve your own TV show...you are so naturally talented. A laugh riot.😂
Did anyone notice how Hugo changed the age of Mme. Thenardier? When the Thenardiers are first introduced, she's described as "some fifteen years younger than her husband". When Jean Valjean comes to collect Cosette, we're told that he's "just over fifty" and she's "nearly forty".
The bias of big books is real! If you ain't lovin it, and you stop readin it, you have to admit it's a sunk achievement time. Also the closed captioning on this video is delightful. Case in point: Montrealer Mayor and Murray Antoinette. Murray. The less lesser historically known but gregariously more eccentric cousin of Marie Antoinette whose famous words "let them listen to drake," were unfortunately rejected from the canon of French history and lost to the years due to their predating any musical figures by that name, and assumed to refer to the duck variety.
A little bit late(?) but it's really worth reading it! In my case, it took almost 6 months to fully mastering it. Not that hard to read but.... Well, Mr. Hugo's countless and endless speech is the only problem.
My favorite thing about you reading this is THIS VIDEO. The digressions in this novel, oh the digressions! That was the most frustrating part about this book to me. I was still happy that I read it as it did make a big emotional impact on me.
Editing masterpiece. And yes Thugnotes- also can I just say I’m so impressed. I’ve also not seen the film the musicals, anything. I’ve tried to pick it up last year and gave up 80 pages in. Unpopular opinion: This video is better than the book.
Really agree with your point in 7:43 I have met readers who put enormous emphasize on how long it takes to finish a book-when it takes them quite “long” (put quotation marks because it's subjective, some may see one week as too long because they are used to finish in just several days) it means the text is dull/boring, which isn't wrong, but isn't completely true either. Read more, not faster, that is, absorb the text more by taking your time with it. It always works wonder with me! :)
Saying anything bad about Les Miserables is like saying something bad about the Sistine Chapel. If you didn't get it, there's something wrong with you, not the Masterpiece. I have read it like six times already, and i will read it again, but i will never read most of the trash you find in book stores these days, i have tried.
Of course if you've put enough time into reading a book you will always claim that it's good regardless of what others say. People should be entitled to their opinions, which is what this video is about
@@adnanbadshah3425 You're right. I forgot that i didn't like 100 Years of Solitude, and that i HATED Don Quijote, and the Great Gatsby left me with a headache. People that like these books might say the same about me: That there is something wrong with me. My Apologies.
The 2700+ pages count is for the original French publication that was in 10 volumes (2 for each part). I'm about 100 pages into my 1432 pages copy; long way to go.
Bravo! Loved the interpretative dance. I pretty much totally agree with your review. The best thing about the digressions was joking about them in the discord, it did make it a fun read-along at least!
I’ve never studied the French Revolution so wanted the broadest scope possible 😃 sadly Les Mis didn’t help because pop culture failed me in understanding what this book actually is about 😂
@@KDbooksLOL. But you managed an outstanding review. I’m going to read it, starting July 9, my birthday. I heard it has 365 chapters, so I intend to read 1 chapter a day. But I ENJOY DIGRESSIONS 😱.
This was fantastic. Loved the song at the end. Thank you for clarifying to everyone that you're not really missing all that much by just watching the musical lol
This is always my problem when reading thick books - after finishing them I always want to rate them high but in fact, it's myself that I want to give a 10/10 or a 5/5 for not using it as a doorstopper and finishing it and not because of the story itself 🤣
I mean, I don't think digressions in a book are *pointless*... it just depends on one's personal taste. To me, those digressions all sounded quite interesting. And don't say that the digressions weren't the *point* of the book, because obviously if the author put it into the book then it *was* the point of the book. It would be like saying the philosophy in Thus Spoke Zarathustra wasn't the point of the book, or the plot was unnecessary!
Mate, you‘re my hero! You made the impossible - finished it and made the most entertaining review for a book that sounds like a long painful experience! 😂 haven‘t seen any of the films as I hate musicals, so I guess I will read about the plot on wikipedia 😅 I am here for this! Already anticipating the Ulisses crazy vibes review.
@@KDbooks I might watch it at some point, when I am feeling open minded and in a good mood, cause honestly musicals end up pissing me off. Why can‘t people just speak? Does every word need to be turned into a song?!
@@KDbooks I‘ve actually seen some operas and found them very beautiful. My appreciation was however much less plot-related and more about the talent and quality of the performance. I really don't feel that bias with long books. I read War and Peace in like 10 days and I despised every page of that shit. The length actually made me hate it more, because it was inflicting 5 times the pain that an average sized bad book would.
LOL this was great :) I've never seen the musical or any film adaptation... It's on my 'maybe-one-day' TBR. I'm quite intrigued but that size and the digressions... but then, I'm tempted to try it one day just to have an opinion XDDD
Hi. I know that this video is over 2 years ago, but did you read Julia Rose’s translation because you like it or that’s the only translation you had in house?
Yeah, I don't think I'm picking this one up. I'm a hundred pages into The Toilers of the Sea (which is significantly smaller) and the plot hasn't started yet. Hugo just keeps presenting characters and describing their boats, I mean come onnnnnn get on with it
This video was EVERYTHING! The energy, the songs, the duet with the baby. Just make it 1200 pages already, i’ll read 😅 Ok first of all, i’m sorry but as a french person i need to be annoying and say there is a mistake in the french revolution date at the beginning of the video. It was 1789, not 1787 (i don’t want to be this person but I need to keep my french nationality. I have no other). Then, for some reason, this video actually made me want to read Les Mis 😅 Certainly not soon, but I do like the idea of spending so much time with these lowly people and making them count ♥️ Finally, I fully agree on Hugo’s style. He is so clear and easy to read, it is a pleasure. He is really talking to everyone. It contributes to his reputation : in France he is truly considered a man of the people (millions of people showed up at his funeral because they just felt he understood and loved and stood for them). Anyways, thank you for this video, it was very enjoyable!! Is The Count of Monte Cristo next please? Ha ha

😂😂Brilliant👏👏👏👏 Love the literary maths I liked some of the digressions, I didn’t like Waterloo when I was reading it but the convent digression made me like the Waterloo one a lot more, I liked the part about the Gamin and slang and didn’t mind the sewer section. The important question now is when will we start the group read of Ulysses, my favourite book of all time?
Is that your wife and child towards the end? She seems like a very balanced and sensible person who is not defined by the utilitarian masochism, and yes, pretention (your words) of a person who reads the long book. You finally get around to a wonderful sing song with your child and, of course, the interpretive dance number. Wow. You hit every conceivable base in this eclectic and un-pretentious response to Les Mis. Well done.
But... why would you discuss the plot and the characters when it's the themes and the language and how everything in the language and the details create the need for discussion of the themes? Amazing editing tho. The whole video was funny as hell.
I am well into the book and I think it is the most over rated shxt I´ve ever come across in my life, it´s not realistic at all, characters have dilemmas that do not look like real life at all, but rather the imaginary world of good and evil of a bourgeoise that is pleased to think they know and understand the lives of the lower classes, it´s stupid morals of good and evil is an absurd pamphlet of good behaviour where guilt is more powerful than kindness, and obedience more important than justice, you come out of that book more stupid than you entered, Im sure Hugo was a prick, and also to torture you over a thousand pages with the stupid cruelty of those destinis, what, am I supossed to think Im wise because I was a witness of all of that?
