It's his best known work but it suits the director since it has trippy, comedic and dark stuff. I hope Jodorowski is heavily involved. And I hope there can be a series just like there'll be one on Dune - The Sisterhood - that will center on the Bene Gesserit, on the Technopriests graphic novels.

    That Jordorowsky has given his blessing and will be involved at some level gives to the film what no other rip off or dilution of the Incal body of works has had before, the real pedigree and the voice of the creator. It's refreshing to hear news of Jodorowsky on his own terms, in relation to his own ideas - there's much more to him than just what he thinks about Frank Herbert - I wonder if anyone will be asking Jodorowsky to direct any of this if it turns into a series
    I'm not the biggest fan of his filmmaking, but considering how much ongoing interest there's been in his conception of Dune, it's a pity this hasn't translated into more opportunities for him to actually direct
    I think his most well known films are El Topo and Holy Mountain, which are certainly emblematic of their time and caught some kind of zeitgeist - they're definitely worth a look, and I wish there were more discussion of them - the best account I've seen is in Midnight Movies, from J Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum - that's an amazing book - probably the best I've seen on cult movies

    You threw me off with these "there's 3 books"... the core Incal series had 6: roughly translated Black Incal, Light Incal, What's Below, What's Up top, The 5th Essence part 1 and 2. The first ones were also published in Métal Hurlant in shorter periodical.
    Then there's sequels and spin off and prequels series, 3 Incal ones, the Meta-Barons, and 2 others. Later there was multiple new editions too.
    But of course you're referencing the English translation and US publication.
    If they makes movies, don't assume they will go with the whole US books though. The core story was designed for 6 books, they may use that to guide multiple movies, maybe with a trilogy of double books or something.

How much money a movie makes absolutely matters because (a) that's really the only quantifiable measure available for assessing whether or not a film has mass appeal, and (b) making back the money from production costs (and hopefully a tidy profit) is the prime motivator for studios to carry out future projects in the same vein, including the possibility of sequels. If movies of a certain genre or type do badly in the box office, then studios will be less inclined to gamble on making more of those types of movies.

    DiFool isn’t just archetypal, but specifically an interpretation of the tarot’s The Fool Trump card, the first of the 22 Major Arcana, who is portrayed in the tarot as mid-fall off a cliff (how the book begins and ends) and is usually accompanied by an animal or pet, usually a dog nipping at his heel (Deepo)... the book goes through the other 21 Major Arcana as the story progresses, and is all about magick initiation and gnosis... anyone who’s seen Holy Mountain will clearly see that Jodorowsky is influenced and inspired by western occult systems like Thelema and Golden Dawn. Think about this stuff next time you read through it...
    Here’s a description of The Fool tarot card: “The Fool represents new beginnings, having faith in the future, being inexperienced, not knowing what to expect, having beginner's luck, improvisation and believing in the universe.”
    Fits like a glove, don’t it? ;)

    Jodorowsky is a weird dude and incredibly self-absorbed. Both El Topo and The Holy Mountain are beautiful looking art pieces, but they’re not film entertainment, they belong in an art museum not a movie theatre. That’s just my opinion of course. With that said, Moebius artwork is magnificent, so that alone is a good reason to pick up the graphic novel.

    • @sscillitani
      @sscillitani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thoughts exactly. He makes very avant-garde art films that most regular people would hate. There's nothing wrong with that, but people who have only ever watched his Dune documentary really should try watching some of his work before getting caught up in the hype. I've not got around to reading the Incal, but I'm suspecting whatever we get is going to be very, very different from what Jodorowsky would have produced himself.

      have you heard the term 'cult movie', or 'midnight movie'? Jodorowsky's films typified that idea - that is, they were some of the first films to be called cult films. They were a staple of the cinema in their time - playing late at night for an adult crowd. Saying they don't belong in a cinema and only in an art museum puts you excessively towards the pop-entertainment/Marvel movie end of the spectrum (which I don't say snobbishly, being polarised in either way limits your vision) and really illustrates how dumbed-down and desensitised to any originality the avaerage consumer of entertainment has become in this age of corporate homogenisation . When you say they're 'not film entertainment' - all that point essentially is is they're too different from Marvel etc. too different from what you've been conditioned to see as entertaining. And restricting your praise to how they 'look' (thanks to recently-deceased cinematographer Rafael Corkidi far more than Jodorosky himself) says you got nothing out of them in terms of their themes/symbolism (of which there's a lot)

    Taika Watiki did direct Thor Raganok and is directing the sequel. He's also directed at least one episode of The Mandalorian. So he does have credits doing big budget "science fiction"... or at least works in a sci fi setting with all of the same kinds of technical issues that go into that. The real question is whether the studio will give him the financing to do it justice. As a writer he is known for his comedic dialog, but directorially he has an impressive visual style that even the Disneyesque Hunt For The Wilderpeople has on display.

    I think Dune might have the same of effect on the movie and TV industry that the original Star Wars had in 1977. That movie led to both the original Battlestar Galactica TV series being approved and Star Trek the Motion Picture, along with many other projects. We are already seeing Hyperion and Incal...I wonder what will be next.

    • @varsityathlete9927
      @varsityathlete9927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont know about that, star wars completely flipped the industry. the current push for sci fi, is more because everything else is worn out, we had 20+ years of comic stuff. sci fi has had historical periods of high productions and low production. dune is more a throwback to an earlier style of film that is rarely seen in big budget, malick is one that does the same thing, thin red line for example. hyperion isn't getting made, it is getting shopped. it already failed as a tv production, its getting made when someone is signing the invoice, that is not the case yet. that is what the article is about in deadline, fishing for interest.
