  • The song “You and the Night and the Music” was written by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz for the 1934 musical “Revenge with Music.”

The song’s lyrics describe a romantic evening spent with a lover, set against the backdrop of music and nighttime. The opening verse sets the scene: “You and the night and the music / Lend me your heart, lend me your ear / I have a tale to tell you, in my way.” The lyrics then go on to describe the way that music can evoke emotion and memory, with lines like “Music is magic, music is love / Like a dream come true all in one sweet song.”
“You and the night and the music” is derived from a poem titled “You and the Night and the Music” by the American poet and playwright Robert Frost. The poem was first published in 1924 and is part of Frost’s collection called “New Hampshire.” The poem consists of only four lines, with each line expressing a sense of longing and yearning for connection, both with the night and the music.
