  • With director Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come now playing in select theaters and arriving On Demand March 2nd, I recently got to speak with Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby about making their LGBTQ-themed period drama. Written by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard and based upon Shepard's story of the same name, the film takes place on a farm in upstate New York in the 1850s where Abigail (Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Kirby) find themselves drawn to one another. The World to Come also stars Christopher Abbott as Kirby’s husband and Casey Affleck as Waterston’s spouse.
During the relaxed interview, Waterston and Kirby talked about what it was like shooting on film in the Romanian countryside, their reaction reading Hansen and Shepard’s script, how the film takes place in a time where people had to spend all their time just trying to survive and love was a luxury, why Kirby felt very in tune with her character, why Waterston didn’t want the shoot to end, and more.
Check out what they had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about and the official synopsis.
    Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby:
    • Have they started playing the junket game?
    • What was it like reading the script for the first time and what did they each love about the writing?
    • How the film takes place in a time where people had to spend all their time just trying to survive and love was a luxury.
    • Waterston on how the shoot reminded her you can learn a lot from the people that lived in the time of the movie.
    • Kirby on how she felt very in tune with the character she played.
    • What was it like working with director Mona Fastvold and shooting on film?
    Here’s the official synopsis:
In this powerful 19th century romance set in the American Northeast, Abigail (Katherine Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. A grieving Abigail tends to her withdrawn husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) as free-spirit Tallie bristles at the jealous control of her husband Finney (Christopher Abbott), when together their intimacy begins to fill a void in each other's lives they never knew existed. Directed by Mona Fastvold and scripted by Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen, The World to Come explores how isolation is overcome by the intensity of human connection.

I bought this movie and have watched it a few times so far. I keep coming back to it because I am intrigued by their desire and tenderness for each other. Vanessa and Katherine bring the chemistry to life in Abigail and Tally and it is one of the most believable portrayals of how intense this type of connection can be between two women. At times I felt like I was an intruder spying on their intimate moments. Other times I felt intoxicated by their affection and playfulness with each other. I didn't think we needed another lesbian period piece this year...but i was so wrong!

This movie deeply affected me! Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby were outstanding! I felt the ache and the longing for a different world. The movie was incredible to watch...even on a 55 inch TV. Would love to see it on the big screen one day!! ♥️♥️♥️

💙 Katherine is so smart and eloquent just like Abigail. I could listen to her on a loop day and night. She nailed the voiceover which makes the film all the more beautiful.

That is why we need more stories like this for us to be reminded of the hardship of those who lived before us. For us to see many thing that we should be grateful.
I love the movie. It's poetic, beautiful and it moved me.

Such a beautiful movie!!! I can't help but to make my own analysis of this film. This sits on my mind and heart for weeks now. Unbelievable lines! Charming portrayal! Heart wrenching soundtrack! This should gather awards...this should be appreciated for its artistry! I feel blessed by Waterston's "astonishment and joy" and Kirby's "You are my city of joy". LOVE THIS FILM SO MUCH!

I didn't expect this movie so much at the beginning but my heart got totally grasped by the sweet bitterness after watching. It is the best period movie so far which depicts the subtle and natural love affair between two women. Love both of the actresses.

Ms. Sandra Bullock said it best in “Hope Floats”, “Beginnings are usually scary, endings are usually sad, but its what's in the middle that counts. So when you find yourself at the beginning, just give hope a chance to float up, and it will.”

i just finished the movie, balled at the end from my own reflections, i want to make my own review video. I thought it displayed women oppression and inequality, toxic controlling masculinity, codependency, narcissism and just that time period really well. The same relationship dynamics that many are still in today.

I bought this movie and I am glad I did!! I watched it a few days ago now I keep playing different scenes in my head. I wish Abigail and Tally would have ran off together. I hate Tally was killed by her husband. I got so angry and wanted to wring his neck! Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby were beautiful and amazing in this movie. Tally's voice was so sexy how she would speak to Abigail. Congrats ladies, if you decide to do another LGBTQ movie then I am all in ladies.
