You'll be aware too that living in Malaysia it's perfectly legal for anyone there to convert to Islam......but illegal to leave aswell as laws where Muslim women can't marry a non Muslim man unless he agrees to convert.....even though Muslim men can marry non Muslim women without similar restrictions.
Muslims will say that "There is no compulsion in religion" when in fact there is.

Nah.. you need to learn more about Islam, especially the pont your point on muslim men marrying non-muslim. Both muslim men and women can marry 'reverted' muslim women/men. There is no mixed religion marriage. It is haram for muslim men/women married to people who are not muslim.

Welcome to Islam, my Muslim sister, Alana!
    ¡Alhamdulillah!
I am also a revert to Islam (didn’t grow up with any religion, studied many world religions during a 7 year search for what was right for me, after reading the entire Qur’an I took shahada in Ramadan 2012 in USA at age 22).
I so much relate to your story of how you came to Islam, and it brought back beautiful feelings and warm memories for me of when I first studied Islam and took shahada more than 11 years ago. Especially it brought back those beautiful feelings exactly as you described with studying the Qur’an and then you felt this spark within yourself - I also felt that “spark” ignited within me the more I studied Qur’an, the Light that lives within all of us. I am so grateful i found what I feel fits what I always described as my “soul knowledge” (what I later discovered is the concept of “fitra” in Islam).
I am so happy for you and grateful that you also found a path that you feel is the right fit for you!
Based on my own experiences as a revert, and knowing how overwhelming it can feel at the beginning of this journey, here are suggestions that help keep things simple and grounded:
    - Remember Allah is boundless Love, Mercy, Compassion, Justice, and Peace. These are Allah’s Qualities toward us, and Allah also loves to see these Qualities manifested in us by our character and behaviors.
    - Know that Allah loves our striving. You don’t have to be perfect from the beginning, nor do you have to be “perfect” ever. As long as you love Allah and show that love to all Allah’s creation and keep striving for the sake of Allah, that striving itself is beautiful to Allah.
    - Know that your relationship with Allah is between you and Allah alone, that only Allah is the One True Judge, therefore no human being has a right to judge you in how you practice your faith.
In fact, for anyone to be judging anyone else in how we practice our Islam many scholars consider to be a form of “small shirk” because by that act a person is going into arrogance and a false belief of considering themselves on the same level as Allah to be the judge of another human being, when in reality only Allah is All Knowing of a person’s full life and intentions, and only Allah is the One True Judge. Therefore it is important as Muslims that we remain humble and know that it is not our place to judge one another, it is only Allah’s place to be the Judge.
    - No one has a right to force you to practice in a particular way based on what they want, as Allah says clearly in the Qur’an “There is no compulsion in religion” (Qur’an 2:256). Allah gives all humans free choice. Learn Islam for yourself from the authentic sources of our religion like Qur’an and *sahih* hadith, and then make choices for yourself based on what you have learned, prayers for guidance, and choosing what is right *for you*
    - 100% affirm & support what you said that this is *your journey* and no one else’s, and your journey and your choices are between you and Allah.
100% support you that you should ignore any comments (in person or online) from any hecklers, ignore anyone judging you, ignore anyone pressuring you.
This is *your journey* and you know how to choose what is right for you.
I’ll say it one more time for all the people in the back: respectfully, this is *Alana’s life* and *Alana’s journey*, not yours, her choices are between her and Allah, only Allah is the One True Judge; and judgemental, pushy, or rude comments are not welcome here.
We should only be supportive of everyone’s right to make their own choices for their own life.
    - Know that Islam has two twin halves of the faith that are both essential: the inner and the outer. The inner is like the sap / lifeblood of the tree, while the outer is like the bark that protects the tree. The inner work is our striving to be the best possible people we can be, to improve our character & behavior, lessen our bad behaviors, bring out our positive Qualities, and serve Allah by using the unique gifts Allah has given us to serve all people and serve all of Allah’s creation. The outer is rituals and laws, such as 5 daily prayers / salat, fasting in Ramadan, paying zakat, ritual cleanliness, etc.
    - Qur’an : start with Qur’an, and stick with Qur’an our whole lives… this is true for all Muslims whether raised Muslim or reverts, we must learn our own religion by going straight to the source, Qur’an, the words of Allah. Qur’an is a guide for how to live, and also offers healing in its “higher vibration” when we listen to it recited in the original Arabic.
    - Qur’an translations in English that are very good and I recommend them: Muhammad Asad translation The Message of the Qur’an (it’s also available PDF free online), and Tajwidi Qur’an translated by Sheikh Nooruddeen Durkee.
    - It’s helpful to put on recitation of the chapter of Qur’an you are studying, while also studying the meaning in English. Qur’an recitation in Arabic has healing vibrations. Listening to recitation of Qur’an also helps with learning short chapters you can use in the 5 daily prayers (salat). It’s nice to learn this way because then we know how to recite a short chapter in Arabic while also understanding the meaning of what we are saying. Some of the reciters of Qur’an whose recitation styles I personally like (because the sound is soothing) are Sheikh Mishary Rashid al Afasy, and Omar Hisham Al Arabi. Indonesia and Malaysia also are known for their excellent female reciters of Qur’an.
    - Chapters of Qur’an that are especially excellent for knowing what is the core of Islam: al-Fatiha, Surah Ikhlas, Surah Mu’minun, Surah Rahman
    - Short Chapters of Qur’an that are easier to learn so you can use them in daily prayers (salat): al Fatiha, Ikhlas, Falaq, Nas, al Inshirah, al Kawthar, al Asr
    - the Names / Qualities of Allah are beautiful and offer guidance on how to develop into our highest selves by embodying the qualities of Allah, and the sound code of each Name also has a healing. As humans each of us carry all of the 99 Names / Qualities of Allah within our fitra, because when Allah created the first human being, breathed Allah’s own breath into clay to give it Ruh, the soul. We can work to grow each of these Qualities that lie within us like a seed waiting for water and sunlight. When we work with a specific Name of Allah, we will do meditation with that Name, and also look for ways to embody that Name/Quality in our daily life. (For example ‘Adl / Justice, Wadud / Love, or Salaam / Peace… we look for and act on ways to practice Justice, Love, and Peace in our daily life and our relationship with ourselves, other people, animals, plants).
An excellent book on this is “99 Names of the One Love” by Dr. Fawzia al Rawi
There are also great songs that can be used to learn and recite the 99 Names of Allah. Here are some of my favorites:

    - Islam gives women many rights. As one Muslim woman to another, I would advise to learn your rights as a Muslim woman thoroughly, and insist they be respected. I am glad it sounds like you have already done some study on the rights of Muslim women. Here are some articles written by Islamic Judges who are women that cover women’s rights in Islamic law:

    - Turn to Allah for guidance, Allah is the Guide (Rashīd), and Allah is the Most Responsive One (Mujīb). This is a reminder for myself as well - and for all us Muslims - to turn to Allah as the Guide, and put our trust in Allah, and know that Allah is Most Responsive and Loving and the Helper and will help us and guide us if we only ask sincerely, and keep our eyes, ears, & hearts open to the signs and help Allah will send.
    - Last but not least, know that Allah loves us, Allah loves you, Allah is closer to you than your jugular vein, and Allah is constantly taking care of you every second: each beat of your heart, the air breathed in & out of your lungs, the stardust that exists in the iron in your blood pumping through your body, the water we drink, the oceans filled with wonders and containing the same percentage of sodium as the percentage of sodium in our own bodies, the soil that grows food to feed us, the forests that are the lungs of our planet and full of beauty and food and medicine for mind body & soul, the rising and setting of the sun each day, the kindness expressed to us by people in our lives… it is all manifestation of Allah’s great Love!
P.S. feel free to reach out any time, I am happy to be a support to you as your sister in Islam, and as a fellow English-speaking woman revert to Islam who has lived in Malaysia for a short while and has a love of Malaysia.
Please keep me in your duas 🤲🏽

What Does the Sharia say on child marriage and underage sex?
In the Digest of Moohummudan Law on p26 we find:
"Forth. When a man has had sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of nine years, and has ruptured the parts*1, it is unlawful for him to have further connection with her, but she is not released from her ties, if connected with him by marriage or slavery. If no rupture has taken place, the prohibition is not incurred according to the most valid opinion.'
(*1 = this means when he has torn her vagina apart and done internal and external damage)
This passage also indicates that even a two-month-old girl can be used for sexual purposes as well as a five-year-old.
When it comes to these Shari'a rulings, these tenets take over from Qur'anic and hadiths which abrogated such texts. A cording to the most prominent scholars, the Shari'a cannot be abrogated.

A friend and I were talking about Islam the other day and we thought that, there's still so much to learn every single day. We are both born and raised Muslim, went to Islamic school for 6 years+, as it is mandatory in Brunei. But there are still stuff that weren't covered in school that we knew only recently. And the more we know, we felt like it's becoming overwhelming. Then the thought came: How would a revert feel like, if we feel like this after knowing the little stuff that we didn't know from school? May you remain steadfast in Islam Alana, take your time learning about Islam, and be the best version of yourself. Becoming a perfect Muslim is nearly impossible, but we can always try. May Allah bless you Alana, I pray that we meet one day when I visit Malaysia.

There will be many never ending challenges. Steadfast, insyAllah. Don't rush, take one thing at a moment. Fasting is not so difficult since you have lived in Malaysia for a few years already. Stop consuming foods and drink that are haram in Islam will be challenging. Praying five times a day needs getting used to. insyAllah.
