  • Stephen Kotkin argues that the West is not a geographic term, it’s an institutional package of financial systems, human capital, technology, and rule of law. It turns out that the West is unbelievably powerful. It just needed to remember that.

kind of hard to look at this 2 minute excerpt from a longer, more nuanced discussion, and play it without context. I forgot what podcast this was from, maybe hoover institute or Lex Friedman, but its much more informative when listened to in its totality. Like, he explains why he believes these things while acknowledging flaws and the challenges the west is dealing with, and why he believes they can be overcome.

The solution is for the West to stop beating itself up over its past failures. All problems are not solved. The West needs to continue to believe in and strengthen its great systems and institutions.

While this short excerpt leaves a lot to be desired for context, there are at least two arguments against Mr. Kotkin's assertions. Cultural habits/training and human nature. Western Culture HAD the advantage and could have if maybe perhaps...

No matter how powerful a country will be, it will collapse at some time.
Examples from history will shed some light, like for example the mighty Roman Empire, Mauryan Empire, British Empire, Soviet Union etc., all collapsed though being incredibly powerful.
The world is always in a cycle of "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times."
Right now, the West is in "good times create weak men", and the west is already in a gradual slow decline.
Asian powers like China, India, Russia, Indonesia are catching up fast. We're not still in the 90's.

But is it in decline? Can you show us numbers that will substantiate your claim that the U.S. is in decline? The countries that you cite as potentially supplanting the U.S. are not getting ahead-they are suffering similar crises and/or crises of their own: in some cases they are suffering very bad crises of their own making or due to their fundamental socio-political structure.
Perhaps you mean moral decline? That’s much harder to objectively support with numbers-it’s a matter of opinion for the most part (but is also part of the normal tug of war between change and tradition). Perhaps you mean demographic decline? That is an easily solvable problem if a certain segment of the population was willing to dispense with xenophobic fear mongering.
You might be correct that all empires eventually decline, but the U.S. still has a lot of life left in it. We will endure storms, of course, along with the rest of the world.

@@MarcosElMalo2 Indeed, the US has a lot of life left. That's why I said "a slow but gradual decline." Yes, I do have some numbers to show the US is declining: The US GDP growth rate is only 2-3%. It simply won't be enough to counter other rising nations, notably China and India, whose economies are showing massive growth (although China has stalled and maybe heading to a recession, it may bounce back after 2-3 years). India is showing a massive 8% growth rate. By no means India is in a severe crisis. The American share of global GDP has gone down. The US was at its prime around the time when its share of GDP was the highest. The decline would be more apparent after 20-30 years, not next week or next year.
The US has less control over nations like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, etc. than it did before. I remember the US having way more leverage over these nations just 5 years ago than it is now. Look at the oil price cap promoted by the US, several Asian nations just rejected it.
By decline, I mean the US's decline as a superpower. The world is becoming increasingly multipolar. There's a leadership crisis in the west. You will see many leaders resigning and new ones coming up, only sticking around for a few months. Almost every week, Biden makes no sense while speaking. As you know, the quality of leadership determines the future of a nation. Necessary reforms are done by apt leaders, which I don't see happening. The US is in a place where the UK was 120 years ago, powerful yet in decline.
The US will stick around interfering in global affairs for the next 100 years, but it will have a lot less say in it as time progresses. They're still incredibly powerful, they can send China back to the stone age if they wish, though at a painful cost. The US armed forces have a budget greater than that of all the major nations combined!
Also, I'm not bitching about the US; this comment is just a reply to this video and your comment. I absolutely have no hate for the US. Americans are very liberal, innovative, and hard-working. I wish them all the best. May they live peaceful and prosperous lives.

      @tomlimer9734 ปีที่แล้ว

Late to answer, but I'm sure you'll see this.
The reason the Roman Empire collapsed was because it was simply too big for it's time. It'd would take 2 weeks to get a message from border guards to the king, whereas now you can send a message from the west to east coast of USA in a second.
The British empire didin't really fall, it volunteraly released it's colonies during the "Decolonization", except for the US.
Soviet Union fell because of oppression, which the western world doesint. People in USSR wanted freedom and democracy.
And as much as the internet likes to portray how Western men are weak, and that femenism is taking over, this is simply not true. There are many strong men and femenine women with moral values in the west.

The US is unbelievably powerful and has all the resources it needs. Europe is not, and now has to buy energy at ridiculous prizes, which will destroy its industry and impoverish it. The war in Ukraine is in the American interest because it separates Russia from Europe, and weakens both.

The US will most likely collapse the same as older civilizations. Inner conflict, break down of social structure, complacency and everything that brings. It will not happen immediately as people would like to believe but it will eventually happen.

Ryan is absolutely correct. As much as statism has infected our lives and the government has run amok, there is no comparing the monumental degrees of freedom we have in the West compared with Russia, China, Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc.
If you think that we're only living in a dictatorial hellhole and that the only solution is to tear the current system down, you have no idea what life is like under actual dictatorship.
Repair the West but don't tear it down.
