I was looking at videos to see how people hooked up the electricity. They almost all skip over that part, but that was the part I was most interested in. Yours was incredibly in depth. I know this takes a lot of time to stop work, record, explain everything, edit it, etc. Thanks for investing the time to educate us all. We appreciate you!
This guy’s channel is something quintessentially Canadian at its best. I keep finding his videos (which aren’t that easy to find sometimes) and his instructions are better than all the hundreds of other channels. And yet he’s the most modest non-showy guy. That’s Canada at its best. Reminds me of Wayne Gretzky , Scoring 5 goals in one game and then just saying he was lucky and has great teammates. Lol
I commented before but I'll say it again... I love your video's Shannon! You remind me so much of my first boss/supervisor that I worked with when I was first starting out in life. He was the best guy I ever worked with.... I was very lucky. He was so calm all the time and patient... Explained things really well. Your voice is therapeutic for me watching your videos because you explain things so well and it brings me back in time to when I worked with this guy. Anyways just wanted to know that your videos are really good and make a big difference! Please continue sharing your knowledge.
Im a contractor and getting ready to install the same size you have, I have installed one about seven years ago🤠..so thanks for the refresher course..you did a great job and easy to follow along 👍🏼
Excellent video! I like the fact that you're thoroughly explaining the installation. I'm handy, but by no means a pro... I am doing all the planning for my own bathroom floor, and this is a very useful resource for me moving forward! Thank You!
Just a small comment to help to get you recommended on youtube. Great video, still confirm you are the best renovation TH-camr. I have already installed floor heating cable, but I have to admit, I got a lot of issues with the "self-levelling" concrete. This system seems far better. I will try it when I will renovate my other bathroom. Continue your good work.
Good video. The reason for limiting the heating cable is due to the change in linear expansion during temperature cycling. There is a slight chance that this could potentially cause the heating cable to fray and create faults.
I like your videos. Very detailed and helpful information. After watching your video I did my own backsplash in kitchen and it came out great. I was planning to redo our main bathroom and thinking about floor heating. Your video just came on time! Thanks and keep up new video!
Shannon, this is a great instructional video. My last home had hydro heated floors of which I dearly miss! May think about doing this in the master bath remodel we’re half way done with. Thanks a ton, and keep the good content coming.
Great Job explaining in detail ! Is that a New Brunswick accent? I will be installing my DITRA heating system tonight with much more confidence after watchin this video. Thanks for posting the video!
great suggestion with the conduit, i do it all the time for Audio/video areas as an easy way to fish cables inside of finished walls for your wall mounted tv's, etc.. really good for home theater setups that are popular in basements these days.
My heating cable is now run through the conduit to the box, sticks out approx 36". Heating cable has been run in the Ditra heat membrane, perfect! Now What do I do with this excess wire on this end that is sticking out of the box? I'm not suppose to cut it. Video doe not show any excess sticking out of the box before the thermostat is installed. I have way too much cable to wind u inside my double gang box. Suggestions
I’m just confused, why not have a second conduit pipe for the thermostat wiring? Or Can you run all three items in one conduit? I thought that was the point of the conduit. You did a great with this video. Thanks again
It should be run separate. It does not need to be in a conduit though because it is low voltage. Run it up the wall cavity and sneak it into the box through a hole .
A glued down engineered wood floor could be. Check your flooring manufacture to see if they recommend it. Also here is a little info from Schluter themselves. th-cam.com/video/AXGhEUt_3v0/w-d-xo.html
Thankyou very much for one of the best tutorials on this system out there. I now feel confident in installing this system. One quick question about vanity spacing and I have a vanity that has legs and wondering if I am able to put heat cable underneath without any problems. I may have bought a little bit to long a cable so am looking to get rid of some. Thanks from Louis.
Nice explanation and demonstration. Just wondering about use of Hardiboard under ditra heat membrane as a base in an RV heated floor project. When should you use cement board to stiffen subfloor?
Schulter website will have recommended substrate thicknesses and support spacings for Ditra heat applications. Also they will list a tech support # which may be the best bet for you situation since it is not a standard home installation .
I used to use schluter products and they were great but couldn't find them lately so I used laticrete and I tell you I will never go back laticrete is greatly superior than schluter in my opinion but that's just me I used schluter for years and the first time I used laticrete I was hooked. I'm not trying to sway anyone but if you like schluter don't try laticrete because you will not want to go back 💯.
The whole point of having two is so if one stops working you can just un hook it and hook up the other. So now all the wires are in the box just in case.I have never had a sensor fail but this is what is recommended by the manufacture.
Thanks for the videos Shannon! I have done quite a few tiling jobs and have always used cement backerboard over the plywood. So Ditra eliminates the need for backerboard? (assuming the floor is level)
Shannon, does the floor heating system need a dedicated electrical circuit? I'm bringing a 20amp circuit for a GFI in the bathroom and didn't know if I can use this circuit for the floor heating. There will only be one outlet in the bathroom. Thanks!
A tip from people who put in radiant in floor heating. Run a piece of conduit and have it come up in the corner of a bathroom vanity or other hidden place. If a sensor fails you can pull out the old one and stuff a new one down using a fish tape
The sensor needs to be under the flooring so I'm not sure how you would do that. I installed two sensors and only hooked one up to the thermo, this leaves the extra as a spare behind the thermo. 35Min. mark.
I love the video and get a lot of good information from them. Would you be able to make a video about how to apply and remove masking tape to prevent peeling or damage the paint?
Use “Frog Tape” and apply a very thin bead of caulk between the top of the tape and the wall that you’re painting. You can paint right over the caulk. DO NOT allow the caulk to completely setup. Pull the tape as soon as all coats of paint have been applied. Your paint lines will be RAZOR sharp!!! If you have a scrap piece of drywall, try this method on it so that you can really get you process and timing down. You will be amazed.
can something like this also be placed under a floating floor. like the snap together stuff. I want to lay down that vinyl snap together stuff that looks like tile.
It depends on the flooring. The flooring must be able to be installed over electric heat cable floors. If it can you could do this and then use a self leveller over the Ditra to embed the entire cable I would think it should be fine ,however I have never done that with this product. I think most plank flooring only allow Hydronic floor heat not electric but I could be wrong?? Check with flooring manufactures

Actually i'm a professional heating installer and i have to say this is a very in depth video and you see he knows what hes doing. good job
Thank you!
Nice job
What would you guys suggest for an exterior tile heating system? I know schluter won’t work for outdoor use
What’s the secret to installing then laying a vinyl plank floor?
He has installed dozens of them and it shows for sure

I love that you didn't edit out the bit where the wire fell back through the wall. Cuz that is what always happens :)
Always!
@@HouseImprovementsis there suggestions if applying on large areas (like 500+ square-foot)
Everyone has lost the fishtape at one time or another! Glad you left it in…..
Excellent instructional video the best one I've seen thank you 42 years as a contractor
Glad it was helpful!
excellent clarity, enunicated, organized, informative and in-depth!!! Could be a Schluter training video. Well done, keep it up.
Best floor heat how-to video in the world!!
This guy did a great job on the tutorial. Like he mentions, it's an easy system but there are a lot of little details. He covered them all.
Much appreciated!

This is the very best of the videos for ditra heat especially because of the testing of the cable section

I’ve installed many of the ditra heat. You did a nice job with this video!
Awesome! Thank you!
great video no grey areas very informative
Nice Job explaining the process very helpful
Good content doesn't need to be shortened. Good vid, been installing Schluter systems for 10 years
Thank you. Check out this follow up video we recently did.th-cam.com/video/afaOrHhIrXA/w-d-xo.html
Very well explained. Am getting ready to install one in my custom built house. I feel confident to tackle the project after watching your video.
Great video, way better and much more detailed then Schluter instruction video, especially on how temp leads are installed. Thanks

Yes I find the self leveller causes more problems. This is really easy. Thanks for the comments.
Great video. Eh? I appreciate the details you included. Watched you several times while installing my Ditra-Heat.

I live in Saskatchewan.
I didn’t know how to do it.with this video I’m ready to instal it👍👌👌👌
Great video ! A big fan of the Schluter products and love the ability to heat the floor so easily. Nice in depth look at this product. Thanks :)
Excellent video. Why do you use two sensors? Are they connected to the same terminals at the thermostat?
One is a back up so if the first one has issues you unhook it at the thermo and hook up the spare.

That is a really helpful video thanks for all that information
Great video, really easy to follow the whole process.
Does the second sensor wire come with the kit? Is that in case of a failed sensor? Thanks
Yes, with this one it does. Installing both gives you a back up down the road if needed.
hi there, great vid. did you mention that the 14/2 supply needs to be AFCI breaker protected. thanks
I did not need that , the thermostat here has its own GFCI protection built in. Cant run this GFCI thermo on a GFCI breaker protected circuit
Read, I said afci, not gfci. I know the thermostat is gfci
@@MrTooTechnical GFCI is higher protection than AFCI, so putting a GFCI on a AFCI protected circuit is unnecessary.
No way. Afci is way better.
Thank u so much, u given very useful information in detail

What’s the square footage of cable did you use in that bathroom
Thanks this was really helpful.
Hi, since there are two sensors, why did you fish-up both of them if one is an extra? Thanks.
The whole point of having two is so if one stops working you can just un hook it and hook up the other. So now all the wires are in the box just in case.I have never had a sensor fail but this is what is recommended by the manufacture.

Bathrooms and kitchens are great
Hello, who recover finally the flood?
Cómo recubres finalmente el piso? Qué material usas ?
Cómo queda terminado ?
Have you tried their peel and stick version?
Schluter has a peal and stick version? I have never seen that .
Excellent video 👍👍👍
I think the half way tag is for a pattern that skips forward then backfills in reverse.

Very informative video. Thanks.
42:02 its likely due to expansion of the wire when warm
Thanks for the videos Shannon! I have done quite a few tiling jobs and have always used cement backerboard over the plywood. So Ditra eliminates the need for backerboard? (assuming the floor is level)
Assuming the current structure is thick enough and sound. You can pour self lever first if the floor is out or wack then install the Ditra over that.
Shannon, does the floor heating system need a dedicated electrical circuit? I'm bringing a 20amp circuit for a GFI in the bathroom and didn't know if I can use this circuit for the floor heating. There will only be one outlet in the bathroom. Thanks!

Yes, different voltages
