  • Watchmen is a comic book classic from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. For a long time the text existed on its own, but recently there has been an increase in related media: the film/movie, The End is Nigh video game, Tales of the Black Freighter, Under the Hood, Before Watchmen, Doomsday Clock, the HBO show, and the recent Rorschach series from Tom King. This video is an account of how I fell into the Watchmen web along with some commentary about how much I enjoyed each component of the extended Watchmen world.

I really enjoyed aspects of Doomsday Clock. The last issue with Manhattan & Superman was great. Almost a "Re-Constructing" comic. "I see tomorrow, the Man of Tomorrow, and for the first time... I feel inspired." But I am a huge Superman fan, so...
Have yet to read the Before Watchmen comics, but I want to check them out honestly.
The Watchmen HBO TV series, has some seriously great ideas (Episode 5 is easily the most "Watchmen-y" and feels most canon to the comic, it's the raining squid episode) but some of it doesn't work for me. Ozymandias is a little too goofy as well. Cool concepts in it though.
The Watchmen movie got me into all of it, so I'll always have a soft spot for the movie. And honestly, I reslly enjoy it to this day. The visuals work so well for the film and the casting for the most part, is spot on. If this movie was made this year, Snyder would totally use "the alien squid" comic book movies have changed so drastically since it released. Never played the video game... wanted to, just never did. Tales of the Blackfreighter was pretty cool for what it is tbh. Just my two cents. Great video!

Thanks for your two cents! I appreciate hearing other perspectives on this Watchmen material! When I was making the video, I was very aware of the fact that it was just my opinion when it came to my reaction to each individual component, and was uneasy about stating 'this is good' or 'this is bad' because so much of that opinion is shaped by where we are at and our state of mind when we actually engage with the text.
I'm not the biggest Superman fan, so maybe I need to give Doomsday Clock another chance, as the end was clearly a bit of a love-letter to the character and his continuity. I read it in single issues, so I did appreciate how they tried to make the comics themselves feel like Watchmen, with the placement of the credits on the inside covers, with the prose material at the end, with the back cover progression, etc.
As for Before Watchmen - as you can tell from my personal scores out of ten - I thought some of it was pretty terrible. But I'd recommend some of it: Ozy and Nite Owl and Dr. M for sure!

@@Upgradeyourbooks Hey, I appreciate the honesty with your review on everything! Well, that makes some sense why you wouldn't like Doomsday Clock so much haha! It's always going to be tricky when they do anything new with the "Watchmen" name on it. Especially with Alan Moore not approving and removing his name completely from it. Dave Gibbons seems a little more open to things (although I think he did not support Doomsday Clock, but he did support the movie and tv series.)

I'm a bit surprised you didn't differentiate between the three movie cuts, especially the ultimate cut which incorporated the animated Black Freighter imto the directors cut. But maybe I'm too picky. Good job anyway. Thx

I'm a bit surprised too...and my only excuse is total ignorance! Until you mentioned it, I had no idea that there were three different cuts of the film! Now you're going to send me back down the rabbit hole, cause I kinda gotta know everything about them. Thanks for the heads-up, and the kind words on the video (despite its many shortcomings!)

I feel like Doomsday Clock is more of a Superman story than a Watchmen story. While I didn't like the way most of the characters were adapted, I really liked Dr.Manhattan as an antagonist to Superman and felt like the parts relating to their conflict were the strongest, mainly due to the symbolic and ideological contrast of the characters. I feel like the story would've been much more coherent if they only used Dr.Manhattan as a crossover character, as he's the only Watchmen character I feel has anything left to offer narratively.

I agree. More of a Superman story. And good call on Dr. Manhattan - it should have just been him. With his power-set and preference for staying apart and observing, he’s a great foil for Supes.
