I have never stuffed anything but food in my mouth but I love all your videos' and I also watch a guy on coon creek outdoors he uses an actual washing machine to wash his capes, I was astonished to see all the dirt and debris that come off in the wash and the cape is like wow that's really nice looking compared to before it went in and the skin too, Thanks for your great advice some day maybe I will try a squirrel or something small to tackle.
Great tip! I’m working on my second mount right now. Got lucky a week back and got a average WV 8. Got it all on video too. Good luck in the tree and thanks for videos!
Hey Dan, I'm in Georgia taking a taxidermy class. I finish this week, I would love to come see your facility and maybe pick your brain on a few things. I live in Birmingham, let me know if this is possible. Thanks in advance
Man that is so cool. Simple yet so profound lol. I’m definitely trying this out I’ve never seen what A clean pickle looks like. I do it same as you and mine stays filthy and I have to check it daily. I bet it holds the ph real good too
On your video on how and why to rehydrate a hide you rinsed the hide and put it in a saltwater only tub to draw out more of the blood. How long did you leave it in the saltwater only solution? Thanks. Hope you get that big buck that you had on camera.
Man a fleshing machine is a MUST HAVE in my opinion. I can shave 5 capes in the time I took me to do 1 by hand and much much thinner. That thing will pay for itself in the first couple months and your tan quality and mount quality will greatly improve.
I got a bison hide I’m trying to diy for the very first time and I’m thinking I might try this. I had to salt the hide before I could fully flesh it, I didn’t want to but the weather turned hot on me so if I errored it was on the side of caution. I’ve seen a few people use a pressure washer to flesh so I was thinking maybe I’d rehydrate like you done here after a couple days of salting, then try fleshing it some with a pressure washer and then salting again. The bison got into a bunch of burdock weed which is EVERYWHERE in the fur, it’s gonna be a hell of a chore getting all that out.
Hey, first i would like to say i have found your videos very helpfull! Been planning reasearching since the end of 2022 after deer season to get into the business. Every video i watch of yours im writing down and taking notes. Really liked the broken antler video it really turned out awesome! Any who i would like to know how long did you leave your cape in the rehydrating mix of salt and water?
It just depends on how long it takes to get playable again. I like to leave mine at least an hour regardless to draw blood out of the cape before rinsing, draining, and putting into the pickle. Usually that does the trick.
Hey thanks for the videos they are great!! So I'm curious when you reuse your pickle do you ever have to add a little bit of acid to bring the ph up? Or if it's a little low you just throw it out?
You can reuse it as long as the pH is maintained. I always throw it out if it isn't very clean though. Makes me paranoid that all the hair will fall out 😂
I just learned about taxidermy.. I was interested to Taxidermy a sugar glider. What step that I can do at the first? Is this same need to soak in salted water? Thanks for ur help.
What size container are you using for the salt bath & pickle? I bought a couple and think I got them to larger and water won’t be deep enough. Thanks for the help
Man I truly have enjoyed your videos. Not so sure the wife has been happy….lol. This is something I have always wanted to do. Think I’m gonna give it a go. Is it silly to try and start with a doe? Other thing I am struggling with understanding is getting ears in place on manikin. Thanks and keep up the videos
At what point do you comb out ticks? I've seen a video on different stitches but can you do one showing you fixing different areas? Ears, nose, arrow holes, etc
I wash out as many ticks as possible when I spray the cape clean after tanning, the remainder will comb out easily after the mount begins to dry. I am about to make a repair video on a torn up buck I just received. It will be a little while before it's done, but be watching for it.
I roll it in a towel, but you don't want it too dry because the cape can dry faster than the glue, and it will pull away from the form and cause drumming. Then I stretch it as needed.
If I’m concerned about hair slippage, can I resalt after the Hide has been in the pickle solution for three days I only salted for one day. I did this on another cape and had major slippage.
Not necessary. The pickle is full of salt and it kills all bacteria. Salting over night is plenty and the hair will not slip after pickling unless the cape was not properly cared for after the animal was killed or the ph in the pickle was not maintained at 1.5
I will temporarily. I have heard that salt can react with ice and create issues with the leather, but I will only freeze it salted if I cannot put it into a pickle once it is ready for some reason, and then I don't freeze longer than a couple weeks.
@@thecedarridgechronicles Thanks. The reason I’m asking is because I’m trying too get started on this project and also working a regular job 7 days a week. Have you had any luck in the deer woods this season?
If I may ask. Where did you get the stretch frames you use for salting. I haven’t been able to locate them. Are they for whitetail deer or for multiple style capes.
I did 😂! You just have to keep in mind that you will be dealing with hunting stories and dead animals over and over every day all year every year. The #1 complaint I hear about taxidermists is that they don't communicate. Whether it be about turnaround time or just listening to a hunting story, hunters like to tell the story of their trophy, so make sure you can prioritize these conversations as an addition to your workload!
So I got a doe a couple weeks ago I ended up getting it pickled and waiting on a tanning solution but my hide is getting dry. Should I rehydrate it or am I out of luck at this point? Also forgot to stretch it because I wasn't sure if I needed to before tanning 🤦♂️
It needed to be either frozen or left in the pickle until it could be neutralized and tanned. You could freeze it now and put it back in the pickle for a couple days before neutralizing and tanning and see if it does ok, but I'm not sure what will happen honestly. You don't stretch it until it's tanned ready to mount
Hey man, I know you'd have to make a video when you get the opportunity to do a mount, but what are the chances you could do a video on a life size whitetail? I have the hide and the horns. But I've never done anything that advanced
@@thecedarridgechronicles that will be amazing! Im a upcoming taxidermist and I have the opportunity to do one. Just curious what your process would be
@@wyattallen8087If you do a life size whitetail it is best to do a dorsel incision. It is a cut all the way down the back to the base of the tail. Then make your cuts on the back of the legs starting at the knees down all the way down to where you will open the hoof. It is like pulling up a sock when putting it on a life size mannikin. Easy peasy! One more thing, cut the tail on the bottom side, not the top side to remove the bone for proper tanning.
Ok my man. I know you have a trick for this. I had a early season short hair buck and the y cut has pulled a little and you can see some seems. How do I cover it 😢 narly buck and I want it perfect Thanks so much
Here’s what I do it was taught to me and it works well After u skin flesh and turn the cape salt it for 5 days Then directly from salt table I mix a tub of water salt and one cup of ammonium alum mix well let it’s Soak in that for 5-10 hours then pull it out let it hang drip dry for a few hours then bag and stick it in freezer over night Next day pull it out and the gooy stuff turns gummy take your scalpel or fleshing to it and it fleshes like a dream rinse it if good wash rinse dry and brush on tan ur ready to go
I just watched the video again and found my answer. Thanks again.

What kind of frames do you use? I am a trapper and have never seen them big enough for a deer cape.
You can order them from McKenzie taxidermy supply

I would follow the same steps as the deer.
I use the mini flesh all pneumatic works greatttttt
Quick question- do you have too be a licensed taxidermist to order from pro 1 chemicals? Thanks again.
No you don't, just give them a call. Great folks!
What size container are you using for the salt bath & pickle? I bought a couple and think I got them to larger and water won’t be deep enough. Thanks for the help
I'm not really sure. They are probably 3' by 2'

I haven't, but I know several folks that use it

I shot a nice 8 pt opening day of rifle season but didn't hit him good, saw another big 8 but too thick to shoot, and got me a big pig last week.
How long can I wait after I remove a hide out of the pickle before I attempt to mount it?
After it comes out, gets neutralized, and gets tanned it needs to be mounted then or put in the freezer
I took on a project to remount a deer. I have the hide soaking in cold saltwater. Any suggestions on how to rehydrate this cape. Thanks.
Was it tanned or dry preserved
Relaxer may work if it won’t rehydrate in salt water
Tanned.
If I may ask. Where did you get the stretch frames you use for salting. I haven’t been able to locate them. Are they for whitetail deer or for multiple style capes.
McKenzie taxidermy supply. You can use them for anything that is large like a deer
@@thecedarridgechronicles Thank you!!
Do those frames have a coating on to keep them from rusting?
What's your advice should a person chase a dream job in taxidermy

Use apoxie sculpt to fill in and smooth the gap and then glue in some trimmed hair with fiber-tac, or you could use flocking and paint it
@@thecedarridgechronicles ok I’ll give it a go. Thanks for the speedy response. Can’t wait to watch you with that fleshing machine 😆
It's going to be interesting lol!
I’m in MS. I have a Dakota 5 that I will be selling soon.
Why are you selling?
Have u ever tried a pressure washer to flesh?
I haven’t
Here’s what I do it was taught to me and it works well
After u skin flesh and turn the cape salt it for 5 days
Then directly from salt table I mix a tub of water salt and one cup of ammonium alum mix well let it’s
Soak in that for 5-10 hours then pull it out let it hang drip dry for a few hours then bag and stick it in freezer over night
Next day pull it out and the gooy stuff turns gummy take your scalpel or fleshing to it and it fleshes like a dream rinse it if good wash rinse dry and brush on tan ur ready to go
Awesome
Instead of going over the cape with a scalpel to flesh it, could you just throw it on a fleshing beam and flesh it with a big fleshing knife?
You can, but without a fleshing wheel it wouldn't remove as much thickness of the hide
@@thecedarridgechronicles Thanks👍
Hey brother may need you!!!
What tan do you use! Do you oil after tanning?
I use Pro 1 professional brush on. No oil required with it.
