Thanks for sharing. I wish you would have shown some examples without the backlight. I was searching for split lighting where one side of the face is totally blacked out as well as the background. I will try some of your tips to figure it out.
Glad it helped. If you want pure black background and total shadow on the other side of the face, negative fill is going to be your friend. A flag/floppy or a piece of duvetyn on the shadow side will help to absorb all the light from that side of the face. A thick light absorbent black backdrop will also go a long way. Hope that helps!!
