    Using an iOS device connected to the THR yields similar results. If you have a looper app, connect the usb cable to THR, then using the Apple usb connection kit, connect the iOS device. My setup uses the L7 looper app. This feature has made my upgrade from the previous version well worth it. And this method requires no power source. Thanks for the great vid Kevin!

    I’m not quite sure why one would want to use a looper pedal AND a backing track together, but I can report this: The bluetooth connection still works even with this loop pedal setup. Neither is bypassed or disabled. So, yes, it can be done, even with the aux in jack used for the loop pedal. Now I just need to find reason to do that. Thanks for the video.

    I've always found it's much simpler to just hook any THR to a laptop or computer (or tablet for that matter) and use a looper software/app. You can just overlay to new tracks and also tweak them to your heart's desire. In some cases you can bluetooth midi control the looper and you only need a USB connection. Or stick HX stomp or PodGo to its aux in if you really want to use it as its speaker :)

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michael_caz_nyc The cable that I bought is a Hosa YMP-434. It says the following on the package: “Breakout 3.5mm TRSF to Dual 1/4 in TS.” So it has a pair of male 1/4” TS plugs on one side that I plug into the stereo outputs of my looper pedal, and a 3.5mm female TRS jack on the other side. Then I just use a 3.5mm male to male cable from there to the Aux Input of the THR amp.

      @@KevinIlsen Thanks man. I did a little more research and some people are saying that this method may Damage the Amp? ( I am not that knowledgable ) but I wish that Yamaha would offer some input? What about just going from the 1/4 inch output of the Looper to the 1/8 inch input of the Aux?

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michael_caz_nyc I’m not knowledgeable enough to know whether it can damage the amp either. I saw several suggestions online about how to use a looper this way and so I tried it and decided to make the video. Regarding just running a cable from one 1/4 inch output of the looper to the 1/8 inch input of the amp you could certainly do that but then you’d only be getting one channel. Honestly that’s probably fine, though. For example, I often take my THR out to open mics and I run a 1/4” instrument cable from one line out jack on the back of the amp, to the mixing board at the venue. Works great and I can still hear through the amp on stage with me.

    What this would really be great for is using the aux input for the drum/bass output on the Digitech Trio+. That way the drum and bass aren't subject to the guitar EQ and effects, and there's a built in mixer with the guitar and audio output knobs.

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and yes. You can run any pedals into the front. Likewise, anything that you'd traditionally put in an FX Loop (using the "4 cable method") could be hooked up the way that I illustrated hooking up the looper. Just be aware, as some have noted in other comments here, that you're going to be using a tiny jack and at least some length of tiny cable, and so you're going to experience some signal loss (vs. using 1/4" cables throughout). So I'd say: do it for practicing at home, but in a performance setting, you might not be 100% happy.

    Hi there ! Great review. ! Question is it possible to connect your guitar wireless to some effect pedals and these effect pedals then connect (wireless or by cable) to the yamaha 30II wireless speaker ? Or is it better to add the effect pedals after the speaker ? What would be a good solution ?

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For an amp with a bona fide FX loop, you generally want some pedals between the guitar and the input to the amp (tuner, wah, overdrive, etc.) and other pedals in the loop (modulation, delay, reverb, etc.) so that they are applied after the amp’s gain stage. So it really depends on what kind of pedals you’re talking about. You could certainly use a wireless transmitter + receiver to go from the guitar into a pedal chain; I specifically bought the full G10S system so that I can use the wireless transmitter with my THR30ii as well as with my other amps and pedalboard setups. As far as going wireless from the end of your pedal chain into the Yamaha, you could probably do that, but you wouldn’t gain much advantage. The point of a wireless system (in my opinion) is so that your movement with the guitar is not restricted by the instrument cable. But the pedals don’t move, so once you hook up a cable from the last pedal into the THR, you don’t need the pedal to follow you around the stage, it can just sit there on the floor ;-).

    If you want to have true stereo sound you might need two 1/4"-1/4" (mono) cables between the THR and the looper. THR line out Left -> Looper Input A; THR line out Right -> Looper Input B. Using Only one cable results in mono loop tracks (i.e. I the same sound on left and right channels). Is this assumption correct? Thanks

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, to retain the true stereo, run a pair of 1/4" mono cables from the L and R outputs of the THR into the L and R inputs of the looper, then use a "Y" adapter to connect a pair of 1/4" mono cables to the L and R outputs of the looper, and combine them into a 1/8" stereo cable to plug into the AUX input of the THR.

    Hi Kevin - many thanks for this great video and work around. However I am unfortunately having an issue when copying your setup, and would be grateful if you could give any guidance/advice.
    I have the THR30ii + Boss RC-5 Looper. When I copy your setup (either with 2 line-outs going into the RC-5, or just one), I get a very twangy / electric sound when I run the loop back into the amp (kind of like a bad "Phaser" effect). I have tried everything I can think of to fix this, including
    1. Running the loop pedal into a separate speaker or to headphones to see if it is an issue with the Loop setup. This sounds fine.
    2. Testing the THR amp's aux and lineout separately. Both work fine.
    3. Running the loop pedal in front of the THR amp (i.e. effects impact both the loop and guitar input). This also works fine.
    Accordingly, the issue only appears when I go Guitar > THR Input (either via cable or Relay G10)> Line Out (mono or stereo) > RC-5 (mono or stereo input and output) > THR Aux input = Terrible twangy tinny electric phaser sound.
    Have you or anyone else run in to this problem? I am at a loss what to check next (I even purchased a Audio Ground Loop Isolator Filter Suppressor to see if that would help, but no luck).
    Cheers
    Luke

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey Luke . . . I think I've got a fix for you! First of all, make absolutely certain that the "Guitar" output knob on the THR30ii is set all the way down to 0. Use the "Audio" knob next to it to control the output volume. In addition, in the THR app on your smartphone, after pairing with the THR30ii, click the icon that looks like a gear (in the upper right corner). In the window that pops up, adjust the "GUITAR/AUDIO" knob so that it is ALL THE WAY DOWN (i.e., set to 0). If that's set above 0, you're going to get a horrible high-pitched squeal.

      @@stevephen I saw it mentioned in a forum somewhere so I tried it. Then I figured I’d make a video showing how to hook it up. Note that you can’t do overdubs on your looper when you hook it up this way, because the overdubs will keep getting recorded on top again. And the small gauge cable going into the aux in jack is going to have some loss of fidelity. But for practicing at home and just being able to improvise with effects over a chord progression, it’s quite adequate.

    New subscriber here so thanks for the vIdeo. It was very helpful and you seem very knowledgeable of the signal flow of the amp I am hoping you can help me figure something out because it’s confusing me. I like busking and playing blues over backing tracks. I have the THR30II plus the Airstep YT bluetooth foot pedal so I can switch channels or add effects which makes using the THR30 a joy. I also have the Line 6 G10 transmitter so I am fully wireless. My question is I want to buy a second THR30II so I can increase the volume when busking. So I am racking my brain trying to figure out how to use the two amps and still be wireless, play along with backing tracks and use the Airstep Bluetooth foot controller. So here are my questions and would be so grateful if you could explain if this would work or have another suggestion.
    1.). Can I use the Line 6 G10 relay to simultaneously control both amps? I thought I read online that was possible but you would know for sure.
    2.). Can I simultaneously stream backing tracks to both amps
    3.) Same goes for Airstep footpedal. Any idea if one pedal can control channel switching on both THR30s?
    My other idea is if the above option does not work, would taking the line out of the left or right pedal from amp 1 into either Line or Aux in to second amp be a working solution meaning I can somehow still use backing tracks and get the power of both amps. I am thinking if I go into Aux and use clean channel on amp 2, the first amp would still allow me to switch channels using the Airstep wireless foot pedal and the second amp would essentially be just used for the increase in volume. I would be able to adjust the mix between backing tracks & guitar sound on the first amp and all I would need is a an adapter to convert from 1/4 inch to 3.5 aux. Or would I be better off going line out on amp 1 to line in on Amp 2 instead of using the Aux in?
    If that doesn’t seem like a workable solution, would I need some type of pedal that has stereo out with one channel going to amp 1 & second channel to amp 2? The only thing I am concerned about is the backing tracks would be too low if I can only Bluetooth to one amp. Or can I forget wireless and get some type of splitter so the output from my iPhone using backing tracks can go to both Aux inputs simultaneously? I still would need both amps for my guitar sound and definitely need channel switching so I can go from clean to dirty sound.
    I know this is a long post so really appreciate any advice you can share and help me with a working solution. 🙏

      I'm glad you found the video helpful. I'll try to answer your questions, but please take it with a grain of salt; I'm just guessing.
      1. I don't see how you can transmit from your Line 6 relay directly to two amps, if that's indeed what you're asking. It's going to pair with only one, and transmit the signal to that one. (I bought the Line 6 transmitter AND receiver; I can transmit directly to the THR30II, or I can use the Line 6 receiver, plug it into one of my other amps, and transmit to that.)
      2. What are you using to stream backing tracks? For example, is it an iPhone, an iPad, a computer? If you have two devices capable of receiving bluetooth audio -- for example, your THR30II and also a portable bluetooth speaker, see if it's possible to stream from your device to both of them. If it is, then yes, you'll be able to stream to both amps.
      3. I have two AirStep foot pedals -- I bought the combo direct from XSonic. So I have the standard one (that allows wireless as well as wired connections) and I also have the Lite (which only supports wireless connections). I generally use one to control the THR30II, and the other to control my computer or tablet. I do not think it's possible for a single wireless AirStep to communicate with two different devices.
      If your main goal is to increase the volume when busking, then I think you should NOT buy a second THR30II. You don't need all the effects in the second THR30II, and you don't need the wireless. capabilities. You don't need two complete THR30IIs; you just need to take the output of the THR30II that you have, and make it louder. Basically, you want to use the THR30II as a pre-amp, and send the signal to another amp that has more power.
      See if you can find a battery powered amp that is pretty much just an amp. It doesn't need to accept a wireless signal from your guitar or from a backing track. It just needs a 1/4" input. Then simply use an instrument cable to go from the line out on your THR30II (either the L or the R jack; it shouldn't matter), into the input of the second amp. This *should* work; it should carry the combination of your guitar and the backing track from the THR30II into the second amp, and amplify it. (If you have a regular amp at home -- not battery powered -- you can test this easily.)
      The reason I think this is going to work is: I often go to open mics to play a few songs. They provide a 1/4" instrument cable that I would typically plug into my acoustic guitar; it runs directly into the bar's mixing board and into their PA. But sometimes I go up on stage at the open mic with my electric guitar and a band. For simple quick setup, I bring my THR30II, my wireless transmitter, and my AirStep. I'm totally wireless, except for one thing: I take the 1/4" cable that they provide, and plug it into the L or R jack on the back of my THR30II. Everything I play ends up feeding into the PA and they are able to control the volume and mix it with the vocal mics, etc. But I am also able to hear it through the speakers of the THR30II -- they are not disabled when using the line out jack, so it basically functions as a stage monitor for my own playing, and I can adjust the volume to suit me.
      Hope this helps. As I said, if you have a regular AC powered amp at home, you can test it. Since the L and R outputs on the back of the THR30II are line level (not speaker level), neither amp should suffer any damage. (BUT . . . I'm not an electrical engineer, so I an't guarantee that.)
      Also, there's a good THR group on Facebook, and I think some other folks have some experience connecting the THR30II to another amp.

      @@KevinIlsen Hey Kevin….thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. It humbles me that you wrote me such a long reply and I really appreciate your feedback.
      And I agree with what you wrote & recommended 100%. The irony is I do not own a car but have an ebike equipped with 6 JBL Extreme 3 speakers and a JBL Boombox 2 that are all networked together using JBLs proprietary Bluetooth feature called PartyBoost found on their latest generation of speakers.
      So when I cruise around Austin TX I stream music using Bluetooth from my IPhone to the JBL Boombox 2 which connects to the 6 Extreme 3s and is like 450 watts of power. It’s an EPIC sounding rig. I am visiting my family in NY now so do not have access to my bike. But from what I read online, in order to use the party boost feature and have all 7 speakers connected using Partyboost the source of the music must be Bluetooth.
      The cool thing is the JBL Boombox 2 has a 3.5 mm Aux input so I am hoping all I need is a cable with a 1/4 inch plug and a 3.5 mm adapter so I can go line out from the THR30 to the Aux in on the JBL Boombox 2 which is 160 watts and way much louder than adding a second THR30. If that works, I will be in my glory and almost want to cry now as I will quadruple the volume of the guitar sound and as you mentioned the THR30 also still plays. Just hoping the 3.5 mm Aux will work because you suggesting going into a line in which JBL Boombox 2 does not have. If that does in fact work I will use my iPhone to stream backing tracks to the 6 JBL Extreme 3s which I already knows works as used these 6 speakers before I added the JBL Boombox 2.
      I keep my THR30 in my saddle bag and wear my guitar on my back so I am fully mobile when I go busking. I am calling JBL support right after I am done replying to your comment to see if there is a work around to get all 7 speakers connected with Partyboost. But worst case scenario I believe I now have an amazing solution as long as THR30 works with JBL Boombox. And you mentioned I only need left or right line out and not a stereo out cable so I am going to order the best quality cable today & adapter from Sweatwater which will be waiting for me when I return to Austin on August 12th.
      Thanks again for giving me probably the best advice I have ever got on YT regarding a question about music. Plus NOT having to buy another THR30 amp is a big savings for me especially when you mentioned the THR30 could still be used as a monitor when line out goes to PA. I used to go to all the open blues jams in Austin until Covid hit and now all I need is my THR30 into PA and I have a wireless channel switching setting with Airstep.
      I will 100% send you an update when I return to Austin but if you tell me in your reply that you believe the THR30 will work fine with the JBL Boombox 2 aux in you will make my day.
      Plus the money I save from not buying a second THR30 I will now put towards a looper which is how I originally found your video because I was wondering if there was a solution using a looper with THR30. I already own a beat buddy so thinking maybe the Singular Aeros would be a good choice. Any thoughts on that looper? It’s not battery powered but I have a Battery bank and enjoy playing outside when weather is nice.
      Thanks again Steve. You are awesome my friend!!!

      @@director2bob I don't have a JBL Boombox 2 but I looked it up online and it looks like a nice unit. Given that it has an AUX input, you should have no trouble connecting the THR30II to it; just run a cable from one of the 1/4" LINE OUT jacks on the back of the THR30II to the 3.5mm AUX input of the JBL. The only issue you might encounter is whether the JBL can simultaneously accept AUX input and Bluetooth input signals. If not, then you won't be able to stream your backing tracks directly from your phone to the JBL. And that will be a big problem, because I just did a little test with my THR30II, and it does NOT appear that the LINE OUT signal carries the backing track.
      Regarding the addition of a looper pedal to your rig: I've only ever used Boss loopers. I have an RC-3 and an RC-5 and they're both awesome. Any looper should work. But here too you're going to have to be careful, because you'll want to put the looper pedal in between the LINE OUT and the AUX IN of the THR30II. Fortunately, there are two LINE OUT jacks, so you should be able to run the OTHER one to the JBL! (And this of course means you've got to be doing everything strictly in mono, so that the L and R channels have the exact same signal.)
      I'll be interested in knowing how this all turns out. Maybe you can record a video once you have it all hooked up!

      You’d need to run two 1/4” cables from the left and right line outs into your looper pedal. If your looper pedal is stereo, then take the two outputs from the looper and combine them using a Y cable connector to run into the AUX input. If your looper pedal is mono, you’ll need to use the Y connector to combine the L and R outputs into a single cable into your looper pedal.

    Hi Kevin - a quick question - are the cables you are using with the R3 stereo? Great video.

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the video, I used a TS (mono) 1/4” cable from one output channel of the THR into one input of the RC3, and then a TRS (stereo) 1/4” cable from one RC3 output, into a mini TRS (stereo) cable that I plugged into the aux input jack of the THR. So, yes and no. But this didn’t give me true stereo. To do that you’d need two individual mono 1/4” cables going from the L and R line outputs of the THR into the L and R inputs of the RC3, then a 1/4” “Y” cable with two TS (mono) plugs on one end and a single TRS (stereo) connector on the other, to join the L and R outputs of the RC3 into a single TRS (stereo) connector, followed by a 1/4” TRS to 1/8”TRS adapter to connect to the aux input of the THR.

    Dumb question here. How does your setup differ from just plugging your guitar into the looper pedal, then running the output of the looper pedal to the guitar input of the amp?

    • @KevinIlsen
      @KevinIlsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The THR has a number of built-in effects, including reverb / delay, chorus, gain level, and of course the overall "voicing." These effects are all applied to whatever signal is fed into the Guitar input. So, for example, if you wanted to record a chord progression on your looper using a "clean" voicing, with maybe just a little reverb and nothing else, and then changed the THR settings to play a lead over the loop using a high gain voicing and a lot of echo, you would NOT be able to do that if you plugged your guitar into the looper pedal and the looper pedal into the guitar input of the THR. The high gain and massive echo would be applied to the entire signal, including the chord progression that you already recorded. This is one of the reasons why amplifiers have an FX Loop. It allows you to put modulation pedals (such as chorus, flanger, reverb, and delay) as well as a looper pedal in between the gain stage of the amp and the power amplifier stage of the amp. You always want your looper to be the very last thing in the signal chain, just before the power amplification stage. Trust me, if you're used to plugging your guitar into your looper, and then your looper into the input of your amp, and if your amp has an FX Loop, try putting your looper in the FX Loop. You'll be much happier.
