60 minutes with Anderson cooper, just did a documentary on what is called a money claw back, being done to SSI and disability recipients. I am looking into, how to contact 60 minutes, and have them cover this situation as well. I have become a victim of the SSI mistakes, they are expecting me to pay back $4,000. I only receive$900 per month, yet they want to withhold $100 per month until it is paid back. Maybe you could contact 60 minutes as well, maybe if we get enough people to do that, then a documentary would be made.
Everyone wants to blame the VA, why not blame the politicians that make the laws the VA has to go by. It’s not a VA issue, it’s a political issue. I am a VA employee who processes claims and we are on a mandatory twenty hours minimum overtime to process all these new PACT Act claims along with new claims that come in for benefits. We are understaffed and overworked. If you are so concerned why don’t you apply for a job and help us out.

I know this is news but this literally happen to my dad like in 2004 he was getting over paid his pension from the air force ..they took back like 20 grand
Of course they need to pay the money back. We have to give the illegal immigrants everything they want for free. How else do you think they could manage this?
You're wrong the democrats are for veterans. The guy that the ex guy put in there to head the veterans affairs has little to nothing knowledge of the the vets. It's not democrats who fund raise for veterans and got millions and kept it for himself.
As a veteran, I am one of those people who got a bill from the VA but for another reason. My frustration is how they are quick to audit veterans and Americans and bill them for their errors. Meanwhile, they are giving billions totaling over trillions to foreign countries, government agencies, NGOs and corporate subsidies and they do not audit and/or force them to repay that money. And YES, the letter included the Crisis hotline number. Shame.
I'm reading this in disbelief & disgust. Your the 2nd poster that mentioned an ending citing a suicide hotlines. They *know* what they're doing! My thought is, can't you all sue them for unnecessary stress, which inevitably effects physical health? Class action lawsuit!
@iamkesha - - I do not know how this will eventually play out but perhaps you can contact a TAX Lawyer/accountant ... If the Government wants back the money then they should go back and refile your tax forms for all the taxes that you paid on the money ...
Let me open it up further for you. Around 2012 ish an insider at the top levels of the VA leaked emails from top officials. The emails proved that the VA purposely complicated the claims process in order to discourage veterans from completing claims. Nothing was done to all involves. It gets even worse. Under Obama congress passed legislation to give the VA 5 billion for better care to veterans. What wasn't revealed, was the fact that the VA employees union lobbied to have all that money shifted to the employees and not the vets. Gets even better. During that same time the number of VA medical providers was not sufficient enough to perform the physical examinations needed during the claims process. Knowing this, the fed gov allowed third party medical businesses to contract with the VA and perform the exams for the C&P process. Guess who started up the medical businesses to do the contracting????? It was a couple of VA top executives. In essence these top va executives created the problem then provided the solution. Of course they quit their VA job just before signing contracts. Nobody went to jail.
Yet lots of non citzens getting everything to them and haven't served the country and are older but non citzens get things as these people have served its a terrible way to be treated .
What our government does to our veterans is disgusting, the government spends billions of American tax dollars across the world, yet they want to gouge veterans that defended our nation and our citizens.
Can't say as the VA has ever gouged me.........They charge me a 15.00 copay to see a Doctor and 8.00 a month for a 30 day supply of medicine.........I can go to a walk-in medical clinic in the community for a 30.00 copay......The last walk-in clinic I went to charged 149.00 for folks with out insurance...............I pay only 30 dollars through my VA benefits.
@@dontaskquestions. The VA is anything but perfect...........but with that said.........have you ever tried any of the other Government agencies? Its not a perfect world............
Neither he nor any other veteran should get more than what they are entitled to receive. The Department of Veteran Affairs feels the same way. That's why they sent the letter.
They paid into Social Security. Most people don't know the Secretary of Labor scedule of income for military service: they also paid for their VA benefits, medical benefits, dental benefits, and death benefit. I happen to know that because it was my job to know that. The VA has always been a ripoff, and any time there is a glimpse of decency the VA does something rotten. How would you feel if any phone inquiry had a long litany about suicide every time? The VA hires sadistic sociopaths and only once in a while hires a private sector MD specialist that does good work the VA employees quickly undermine, and not just a little. They easily malpractice the MD because the MD didn't know VA followup for getting the actual care. The delays aren't a waiting line. The delays 8 months, 10 months, a year and a half is the run around. I am telling you these are vile people, and in his own state Senator Tester is hated because for him everything is bribes. The VA should ended. The government should decide what schedule of payment they want for veterans and for the medical services the veteran has to find in the private sector by referrals, just like everyone else clinic or ER, then specialist. The military services should not be shirking their duty to have their own medical board make the determination at the end of service, if disabled, or after the end of service for re-evaluation if appropriate: some medical conditions do not improve. The rehab only goes so far, then, do a rating report. The veteran should not be subjected to bureaucrats.
Absolutely disgraceful, the VA agency should write it off and be done with it. They made the mistake, let it come out of their budget. Live with it, VA
The VA does not have a money tree...........they are fighting for funds like every other Federal Agency..............let it com out of their budget............................oh hell no.
When I separated I refused to register with the VA. I was fortunate that I was successful in the civilian sector and not have suffered in my time in service. I truly did not want to draw from the pool that others would truly need from. And this is my fear that the government and VA would take advantage of the people they have already taken advantage of. They have taken their youth and vigor. They have taken their bodies. They have destroyed their souls. They have tortured their minds. Now they take away their peace of mind and destroy their future to pass in dignity. Appreciation and remembrance of their full sacrifices forgotten. I am proud of my service but I am not proud of our government's failures. This should be a warning if a recruiter comes for your sons and daughters. They will be chewn up and spat out. Discarded when their usefulness is consumed. No grace and honors given. Shame on them.
This man RD nailed it! As a Vietnam action veteran, 1968-'69 I too came home after 8 years of service. I Pursued my life long trucking career of 39 years but the only thing I ever accepted from the VA was free hearing aids..that was in 2016. It was during those interactions that I kept getting asked " have you thought about it today?" ( suicide)??? Well no, but now I'm thinking about it because you asked the question!!! Let's go check your BP...oh my it's quite high.. wonder why.. Then I had it checked at another time just before leaving the facility, AND MY BP WAS BACK TO NORMAL .
They pretend to remember us at election time. But never when it comes time to vote to help us. Our GOP Congress is disgraceful. Jon Stewart had to shame them into doing what was right. Really sad.
It’s not a pool. If we don’t get the money that’s all made up, the government just reallocates the money to spend on bullets or to send to richer countries. I tell every veteran I know to file claims for their service. It’s not need or means based. We all deserve that money and no amount of scare tactics or pride trips should stop anyone from getting what’s rightfully his.
I'm married to an Army vet and we are going through a very similar thing. He was deployed multiple times starting in the early 2000's and after years of service he was let go due to cutbacks, crushing his dreams of being a career soldier. He was given separation pay to help him establish a new civilian life but was never told that money would need to be paid back. Now, over fifteen years later, they started taking part of his monthly pension to repay that money back. Every month it's a different amount with no explanation of how much they will take of the next check or how much money they feel we still owe them. He is disabled (due to what happened mentally and physically while he was in the Army)and we depend on that money to live so I feel for this Veteran and understand what he's going through.
And they wonder why kids these day dont want to join the armed forces. We all see and hear what these good men did for their contry, and then how the government treats them. I tell you if i was a younger person id stay away too.
@@LonnieBrewer-dd4wi sometimes it would be too long to articulate in a YT comment. Also keep in mind, some people are afraid to say things that can sabotage future services they may need. I will give you one instance, a Vet went to the media about the VA claiming they couldn't find his medical records (proving that he is a disabled Veteran). Once I heard about this case (this was many years ago), I took my records to the County Hall of Records (where they keep all records such as property deeds) and I paid have a copy of my records stored there. I recommend it for people have other important documents (you never know when records can be stolen/lost or damaged in flood/fire, etc.)
And they wonder why there is such a recruitment shortage among young people. Nobody wants to risk their life just to be treated like garbage like this.
There isn't a recruitment shortage. People just aren't signing up. If they pull a 'false flag' and start giving those patriotic fireside chats, they'll have 100k a week signing up to go overseas.
My husband is a Vietnam Veteran and he has dementia and cancer. I haven't been able to work for two years because he can't be left alone. The struggle is horrible for some veterans. We live on his VA disability which I'm grateful to have but it isn't much just buying food is a struggle. It breaks my heart what veterans go through. I would like to be able to buy my husband some pajamas and be able to make him a proper Christmas dinner but even the small things we can't afford. God bless all Veterans♡
Vietnam Vet and has cancer? That could be Agent Orange...you need to go find an advocate (the DAV is amazing at this) and get them working on it. My step dad was upgraded immediately to 100% and services started flowing in; it changes everything. Relax. Disability is totally tax free and has no connection to social security. The VA pension is for low income earners that fall into a specific income range to qualify and if social security takes you above that threshold you lose your eligibility. I too am a 100% disabled veteran but I never qualified for the pension. But don't take my word for it call your VA advocate, American legion, VFW or DAV and they will explain it to you.
This was about pension payments not disability payment seems he was switched to pension as the payment was higher but wasn’t told about the income restrictions.
You won’t since pension is similar at max rate to 60% for just the veteran but if you qualify for social security that is offsetting the VA pension just like any other form of income so any one at rated 50% shouldn’t switch to pension and the VA won’t change to pension since your disability is higher. The pension might be good for some rated at 40% or less or someone who plans to wait out a few years to maximize social security benefits but I would switch back to disability payments and you can always complain to VA worse they are going to say is no and even that you can appeal.
I worked at a VA hospital for just over a month and it is the most top-heavy thing I've ever seen. Patient care was sufficient but the amount of administrative workers and people not involved in care at all is unprecedented in any hospital I've worked in. They should be the most respected people in this country for giving up their time and unfortunately sometimes their lives for this country to keep the freedoms our current government is trying to take away. Sickening and this happens a lot.
As a veteran, I agree, but I also wonder why I was charged income taxes while I was active duty. These Women and Men severed this country and is equally entitled to all benefits afforded to them.

There is legislation in the works to fix that (and has been for years) but the cost is what always shuts it down.
@rogersmith7808 you can collect a disability pay and social security without any issue. Same with a pension from retirement from the military. My veteran wife died 8/14/23 and the VA sent me a letter of overpayment, even though I reported her death on 08/15/23, knowing it is the law. The VA Debt Management wrote to me saying my debt is $322.00 and I am service-connected veteran. I just payed it because the letter threatened to cut all of my VA service-connected pay if I didn’t pay. The person who crafts the letters needs a lot more training in communication skills and letter writing. They made sound like THEY discovered the discrepancy. I have phone records to prove I am the one who reported the death of my veteran spouse. I needed that money for her burial expenses which costs as much as a Tesla. The VA doesn’t pay veterans enough to pay for decent funeral expenses for my wife who gave me 47 years of of a beautiful marriage that should have lasted longer if she wasn’t over medicated by her doctors.

Veterans are treated horribly one way or another. In my case I joined the Navy in 1971 after graduating from high school. A 4-year active duty enlistment. In 1974 Vietnam was still going on so I re-enlisted for six more years active duty. I was paid a $1,000 a year bonus for each year I had re-enlisted. After I got out of the Navy in 1981, my parents were contacted and told I had been overpaid $6,000. So my parents paid the $6,000 back. Almost 10 years later my parents finally told me about it. I was totally furious but unfortunately it was too late to have the $6,000 returned to my parents. I finally found out why the Navy department wanted the $6,000 back when I asked for a copy of my DD-214. Nowhere on my DD-214 does it show that I served an additional 6 years in the Navy stationed on board the USS Rogers DD 876. Apparently no one botheref to forward my reenlistment papers and my transfer orders to the Rogers.

It’s likely you have better records than they do. They are incapable, we have to do it. Same as Social Security. They can’t produce their own background information, but oh, you owe us 20K. This has been happening to veterans all over the country. When they did not adjust the income cutoff levels and gave no warning, an overpayment was red flagged by computers. If the cutoff was $2500 and your income rose to $2502, you were supposedly not eligible to receive VA benefits for the past decade.
@gringott12 exactly! I’m so glad someone else understands this. I had a Vietnam veteran who was on a pension and got married. As an Army retiree myself, the disability system has been difficult, but at least there’s less hassle right now, as I get my own treatment under community care.
@gringott12 Thank you. We are overwhelmed in our office cuz the good news got out by word of mouth that my partner & I never quit & frankly, we refuse to lose cases cuz we go through each veteran from hair to toenail, all previous claims plus I will request previous C&P’s looking for any possible diagnoses that examiner might have written. We have had to clean up so much crappy VSO work to get our veterans compensated. I tell my vets - do what I say when I say and tell me if you hear anything from VBA. Their actions tell me immediately how serious they are. It’s shocking how much paper VBA wastes requesting forms I have previously submitted. We are non-profit cuz our clients are our Brothers & Sisters. Vets need NOT be charged for the benefits they earned!
My gf's father is a vet and she was supposed to be getting benefits for school...They end up telling her around 6 months before graduation that it actually does not cover her school, they stopped payments, and said she owes them money. Thanks VA
As a veteran I can confirm they pretend to care while you're their property but the second you're out they'll spend no shortage of the "money they don't supposedly have" making our lives harder. It's pretty messed up when THEY are why WE cannot usually adapt back to civilian life.
I got an idea! Stop paying every other countries debts and start paying our own. Provide immediate and permanent relief to veterans before sending any other country aid of any kind. Let's these vets live their lives in peace with honor and the respect they earned through sacrifice to protect this country
@@ThatOpalGuy It's a good thing you weren't around during WWII. We'd all be speaking German or Japanese. And who's going to keep the terrorists and foreign dictators from attacking and killing you while you are busy making money for retirement?
I'm a combat wounded veteran retired from the United States Army and the VA told me they'd overpaid me by mistake over 10 years ago and they simply took over $25,000 from my pay over a period of time to recoup those monies. It was their screw up but I was the one held responsible and there was no recourse available. They simply took what rhey wanted. It sounds like the veteran in this story might get some relief and not have to pay the monies in question because of the fact that there are multiple thousands affected and thus it's newsworthy and looks bad for the VA. But when there aren't thousands upon thousands, and a national media exposure, the VA will simply take what they want irregardless of facts or fault, etc.
Unfortunately, this is a common practice by the VA. Although no fault of my own, similar thing happened to me 13 years ago and they recouped every last penny. I had to downgrade my residence, my marriage dissolved, my kids suffered, and the only thing the VA could tell me was that I “slipped through the cracks somehow.” I slipped through the cracks alright…and just about fell into the abyss.
@@URightButNo accountability all the Veterans in the comments with this sob story are complete liars. It’s horrifying to witness as a veteran myself. They know when they’re being overpaid & don’t report it and cry when the VA comes to collect.
This shit happened to me twice. I was in the National Guard and was on ADOS, i had to pay back $1000 because they didnt subtract the food cost when I was at Fort Hood. And two years after I got out, I received another debt payment of $900 because they said I was overpaid. Smh.
The VA needs a serious overhaul, every single veteran including me has had issues with them. I’m afraid of what happens when I reach this man’s age, the kind of shady behavior they’ll force on me and my friends.
This is the same way Admin treats you while you’re in the service…and it always comes down to one question: “did the member receive the money?” Instead of, “who erroneously gave them the money?” The people who sit behind the desk who press the buttons and approve these payments need to be held accountable for this error, not the people who were overpaid.
This hits home, my hubby was given a letter too and the VA took one full year of payments from him and now just this past year we are receiving VA payments again, but only after they collected for a full year. Caused us a hardship for that year for sure. This was not due to his SS payments but to our now having the right year when we were married 22 yrs ago. Hubby was wrong on year married and had to pay back the little monies he gets for a spouse

I truly believe they do this on purpose, so they can accrue HUGE penalties and interest! This is exactly what the IRS does! My tax preparer made a $100 dollar mistake on my taxes, which I could've easily paid if I had known. IRS waited for 7 years to notify me and by then with penalties and interest it had ballooned to over $3,000!
The same identical crap happened to me! Only it was just $23,000. I'm a 71 year old Army Veteran. I took the problem to the VA "Help" Clinic were as I eventually got the $23,000 waived. This was during the first part of the pandemic. They told me I will have to be a good American and wait the pandemic out. Meanwhile they were trying to take my home. When I called the Washington office one of the stupid moron women asked if I was stressed out over this, and I blew it and told her DAM STRAIGHT I was! So to add insult to injury she called my local police Department and made false statements that I may harm myself. Then I was faced with the additional embarrassment of explaining to the cops and convincing them that I was just fine. This is how our idiot government operates.
Have had the VA repeatedly try something similar, all 3 times claiming a roughly $64,000 overpayment, for an income that is exempt, and all three times have had to be informed that it is exempt. The VA seems to love to do this to veterans. Yet if they owe you, good luck on getting that
That part I do not know, this was for non service-connected 100% disability, it is called pension via the VA. I was shot and paralyzed while in the guard by a fellow soldier who improperly unloaded a pistol. Though since it was not on a proper drill weekend, they counted it as non service-connected, but since I could not work, they provided a pension. Yes the VA will do that. There is a program that my wife was signed up for called the bowel and bladder program (B&B), to help with issues down south. The VA paid her for providing this service for me. Pension is supposed to go down, dollar for dollar with an income by either you or your spouse, which sucked with her wanting to get a job. YET, according to their own regulations, this B&B program is not counted as an "income" as it falls under the category of "maintenance" being provided for the veteran. Yet every few years, someone at the VA who doesn't know their own regulations, will suddenly count it as an overpayment, and I have to fight with the VA alllll over again, over the same stupid thing.@@newagain9964
There a difference between receiving a service connected disability pension which has nothing to do with your civilian income and then in addition to that receiving a protected disability rate pension which is based on income and is basically reserved for low income veterans. So this guy didn’t update his income level when he started receiving social security which put him 10k over the income level for the protected disability rate. And I find it hard to believe he didn’t know because there’s periodic (most likely yearly) updating that must occur and there has to be some level of hiding or claiming ignorance by avoidance.
Also remember, we live in a country where a person is supposed to be “presumed innocent until proven guilty”. Which seems to have somehow become “presumed guilty until proven innocent”. And yes, with how confusing a lot of the bureaucracy is with the VA, I can see how someone could get confused as to which income is claimable man’s which is not. @@TheRealdal
There should be a statute of limitations on stuff like this. Something like agencies have three years to notice accounting errors and begin the remediation process.
So you're saying we should get $30k back from him instead of $108k? Given his monthly payments are $221/month, he's 72, he'll be 112 when it's all paid off. I hope he enjoyed his $108k that he was overpaid.
@@reubensandwich9249 Yes, I am. It is completely reasonable to expect an agency or business to internally audit their books every 3 years. They really should do it every year. If the agency is negligent and fails to catch something, it is on them unless there was intentional fraud by the other party. In my opinion, this is no different than limitations on IRS collections. And yes in this case the taxpayers are the group paying for the mistake. If you are someone living on a limited fixed income $221/month can make a world of difference in whether you are able to pay for rent, food, and medicine.
served over 40 years ago and have avoided the VA for the most part , when I see things like this I’m glad I did. Now if I can just get social security and Medicare to not screw me over we’ll be good.
This is common, and it is the Veteran's responsibility to report any income when they are on the Non Service Connection pension. Most veteran are made aware of this when they apply for the pension. Its a low income pension that's paid out to the veteran due to them having little to no income in the time being. Once the veteran receives SS or lets say starts working they have to report it, and the pension will be either reduced or taken away. I am a VSO and I see this all the time and a lot of times the veteran know what is going on but enjoy the double income, and decide not to say anything while they are racking up an over payment. We do not know the full story to this.
Thank you it’s so horrible seeing how dishonest 90% of these veterans in the comments are being. The VA will absolutely let you know you were overpaid and will even set up a payment plan with you. Even send notices on how much you’ll get and for how long. These people acting like they had no idea they were receiving money they shouldn’t have are just complete liars.

This lack of professionalism at the VA is impacting recruiting goals; as an older vet I have told younger people who are interested in joining the military to hold off for now until the present administration 'passes by" because the government is just not interested in taking care of veterans. I have so much trouble just getting through to an appointment line at the VA; God forbid I ever get really sick. The VA is full of staff many of whom do the absolute least amount of work to get that steady paycheck. Same exact thing I’m dealing with… my wife is using the chapter 35 DEA fund. We keep getting letters saying we were overpaid every other month. We don’t even have any info on the exact amount we should be getting in the first place, so how the hell are we supposed to know when we were overpaid
When I was actively serving I received an overpayment on one monthly paycheck. I was training in the field and was unable to address it until many weeks later. They charged me huge interest and taxes on the overpayment which made my actual pay about 25% lower. A year or so later while on a short deployment I received a huge underpayment. When I was able to get to finance they only paid me the amount due, minus taxes of course. I asked where the interest was and of course they just glared at me like zombies.
Up until April of this year, the interest rate on debt was 1%. It went up to 3% in April. That’s simple interest btw, not compound. Interest is also only collected if you don’t respond to your debt notification or choose to repay your debt in installments spanning more than two months. If your overpayment was of taxable income, you paid the regular tax rate on it; if it was on non taxable income, then you didn’t.

I was totally furious but unfortunately it was too late to have the $6,000 returned to my parents. I finally found out why the Navy department wanted the $6,000 back when I asked for a copy of my DD-214. This has been happening to veterans all over the country. When they did not adjust the income cutoff levels and gave no warning, an overpayment was red flagged by computers.
This would be great, unfortunately the Republicans in our government consistently vote against helping Americans every single time it’s up for vote.
That will NEVER never ever happen. This entire world is set up to siphon your resource to keep selected characters in power over you.
Or, get a real job and save for retirement
@@ThatOpalGuy It's a good thing you weren't around during WWII. We'd all be speaking German or Japanese. And who's going to keep the terrorists and foreign dictators from attacking and killing you while you are busy making money for retirement?
@joevignolor4u949 well, unlike bonespurs, I couldn't have dodged being drafted.
Another reason why recruitment numbers have fallen.
VA and the US military itself probably should consider not treating their personnel like crap
Yeah I’m sure alllll that was through “no fault of your own”
@@URightButNo accountability all the Veterans in the comments with this sob story are complete liars.
Yes! This happened to me, repeatedly. Imagine getting a 300 dollar paycheck because admin didn't gain you and then they turn around and blame you.
So they caught your mistake and they were wrong to collect?
@@URightButStop being naive he tried to cheat the system & got caught. No one forgets the year they were married unless it’ll coincidentally allot them a higher some of money. Peoples first mistake is thinking all veterans are honest!
That happened to my aunt, thankfully the VA forgave the debt after we showed the correct paperwork, showing she reported her income.
That's the thing. This reporter is leaving out a LOT of detail. Did this guy even call the number in the letter (as suggested in the letter!) to discuss relief from this debt? Damn clickbait story.

@@DJ-769Shut up with your SAME DUMB REPLY. you keep copy/pasting the samething! You are probably a paid planted agent!!!!
“A government that gives you everything, is a government that can take away everything.”
Thst the thing they didnt guve us shit.
I never got one of those stimulus checks
Imagine thinking the US government gives anything lol
Have had the VA repeatedly try something similar, all 3 times claiming a roughly $64,000 overpayment, for an income that is exempt, and all three times have had to be informed that it is exempt. The VA seems to love to do this to veterans. Yet if they owe you, good luck on getting that
I’m confused. The VA sends payments out to ppl for not having enough (taxable) income? Like their own version of TANF or SNAP? Ummm Why??
@@LTCDRRAZOR works both ways, everyone is always ready to blame the VA for everything. However I see a lot of VA fraud.
How about the VA says "You know what? We fucked up. Keep it. You earned it. Thank you for your service"
Also on the award letter it states if you start receiving any income please report it right away to the VA.
@@recon_p1990 They all did report it. This marine is the news story said he did. This is just a money grab to pay for all the illegals. Did you know that all the VA hospitals are too busy providing medical care to illegal migrants, to provide medial care to our veterans? Google it if you don't believe me. There are photos of VA emergency rooms filled with illegaI migrants. Don't believe whatever the media and left wing government tell you man. Also, I seriously doubt you have any compassion to our veterans like you should. If you are of Christian Faith, you need to start praying long and hard for forgiveness from Jesus man. You have sinned the deadly sins of Greed, Larceny, and in some instances, unaliving the veterans, if what you do everyday drives them to self termination. That's on you. Thou shall not unalive, includes unaliving by driving someone to self termination, which is the worst way you could commit that sin. By not speaking up and doing anything about it, you are complicit, and in the eyes of the lord, equally guilty.
He claims to have the proof that he reported his SS to them when he applied. The official excuse from the VA was that they miscalculated the payments. What "full story" do you need?
This lack of professionalism at the VA is impacting recruiting goals; as an older vet I have told younger people who are interested in joining the military to hold off for now until the present administration 'passes by" because the government is just not interested in taking care of veterans. I have so much trouble just getting through to an appointment line at the VA; God forbid I ever get really sick. The VA is full of staff many of whom do the absolute least amount of work to get that steady paycheck. Like many government workers I've interacted with during my active duty time, they're only interested in picking the low handing fruit and it's nearly impossible to fire them. I use the VA as little as possible; I choose to live a healthy lifestyle so I never need to walk into the place. PHC USN Retired

If your overpayment was of taxable income, you paid the regular tax rate on it; if it was on non taxable income, then you didn’t.

you don't sound rude, you sound like most finance people in the government, Like you know everything , and that because it is policy, it is right.
That wasn't this year. That was over 30 years ago. That wasn't a debt, debts are monies you owe towards paying for loans and things you purchase by your own volition. This was before cell phones, emails and all the other means of rapid communication that you are so used to and I was on a mountain in Bavaria ( watching the Soviets in Czechoslovakia if you remember those places) for 5 weeks. 1% is as wrong as 20% to us indigenous Patriots. When they owed me money , I was in the middle of a Southwest Asian conflict ( again before cell phones and email) sleeping in a different foxhole covered with my pancho liner every night for 7 months before I could tool on down to finance and request my money back. When I did, it was at 0$ percent ( Compound) interest. It's funny how folks can ever think that it is ok for the government to screw up themselves and make money off you. They have always done that. I paid them back rapidly, as soon as I was physically able, in person with interest. They paid me back at their leisure, by mail , less than they owed me. It still happens too. No, you didn't sound rude, you sounded fascistly moral like all government employees especially the HBIC of the finance office who can do math and no wrongp.
