No apology necessary from me. Just keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks 😊
No apology needed Jim. You are the greatest teacher for ' learn ' us how to play the banjo and not necessarily ' sing ' the banjo - but this is just an added bonus. I am so grateful for your teaching me how to play the banjo and begin my journey which I am on still going over the first 10 lessons and looking at some of your other songs like may the circle be unbroken and I'll fly away. thank you for making this possible for a 75 + young man. Much love and blessings from above.
Thanks for letting me be a part of your banjo journey
Thank you. This afterthought was indeed helpful. And no apology necessary. The splendiferous rendition was worth waiting for.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, it was just what I needed. Just working on lesson 4 and was trying to sort out timing. You are the best banjo teacher on the internet. Thank you.
Happy to help!
Jim....this is a huge help. Hearing the words helps with the rhythm. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Ugh I needed this! Thank you Jim.
Glad I could help
I love Jim’s videos Shelby has taught me everything I know and she said that Jim taught her how to play it
Thanks! Shelby was a great student. I bet you are too.
Jim, you are fantastic! This certainly does open up this song for me, and I appreciate it even more now. I certainly didn't know there were any lyrics and had always confused it with/ the song from The Band. Singing it going forward. Thanks, brother.
Glad I could help!
No apologies necessary. I just wanted to thank you for your clear and concise instructions. In a few short weeks since I bought my banjo, I can start to hear some progress and it’s all thanks to you!
Thanks for letting me be a part of your banjo journey. ☺️
@@JimPankey wow..Jim..I am thrilled you stopped by..you are a legend my friend❤❤❤glen
Thanks jim, what i did was just looked up a recording of the actual song which helped
Same! 🤣
No apology is needed! I sure appreciate all you do!!!
Thanks ☺️
Thanks for being a great teacher! Thanks for being humble and human. I forgive you completely. You a very insightful, I have always wondered what the words were for cripple creek and many other songs. You have added a new dimension to my banjo playing. Playing the words is so much more fun, too. Thanks a million times.
☺️ Thanks for letting me be a part of your banjo journey
Thank you so much for doing this! You sang along to the chorus in one of your videos, I learned that bit, but really struggled with the rest. Not many people sing and play at the same time. Love it!
Glad I could help!
Jim thanks for your showing how to ‘do it’. First up on my learning. Gave me happy confidence to continue.
Glad I could help 😀
Jim, you are absolutely the best teacher on youtube. I have been watching your videos over and over each time I learn a little more. I took lessons about 30 years ago and hadn't played since you have inspired me to finally put the time in and learn this. My hope is that one day I play half as good as you.
You can do it!
I went through your learning videos of cripple creek, and after I struggled trying to find out how the words fit with the parts you taught. Thank you for clearing up the words with the lyrics 💡
Glad I could help!
No apology needed. I can now sing and play the banjo! I can’t express how much I appreciate all the effort you put into these videos.
Glad to hear it!
Your the best Jim
Thanks 😊
Thanks Jim x
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate this so much! I’m new to bluegrass. The banjo. All of it. So I was not familiar with cripple creek. You are such a great teacher Jim.
Glad it was helpful!
This is Great! Thank you
You're very welcome!
You are amazing thank you
You are so welcome
We forgive you jim lol, after all that you have done for the banjo community, how couldn't we. If it wasn't for you i wouldn't even be playing the banjo. Thank you again jim, and keep up the great work!!
I appreciate that
Thanks Jim ! ~~~
You’re welcome ☺️
Man there's no need to apologize. This is just another expansion pack 😉 and we all appreciate it Jim ❤️
Hope it helps. :)
Jim always does good in his videos
Thanks Jim ,
welcome!
You’re the best.
Thanks
Brilliant Jim, still trying to grasp the banjo and technique. The only way to learn is pausing and rewinding your videos. Thank you 🙏🪕
Happy to help!
I just started your beginner tutorial from 9yrs ago learning to play Banjo/Cripple Creek (up to lesson 2). I wasn’t familiar with the song and looked up other videos. I admit it seemed a bit overwhelming (how will I learn this? It seems so complicated) but I am committed. This definitely helps understanding the rhythm. Learning Banjo has been a bucket list for me for years. Just bought my first banjo this past weekend at a pawn shop-a beautiful instrument. Your teaching method is amazing and I’m so glad I’ve stumbled upon your videos.
You’ve got this!
It’s an easy assumption to make that everyone knows these songs. As a teacher I have made that mistake myself. The internet is awash with examples of this music, good and bad. The real secret to learning it is to listen, listen and listen.
Listening is totally the key! Can’t speak the language if you don’t know what it sounds like.
Apology accepted!😂
Learning this song now and this really helps! Thanks Jim!
enjoy!
We appreciate the consideration!
Glad to help!
I remember learning cripple creek with you as a first song a loooong time ago in C-worth. haha. I really wanted a Price banjo you had, wish I would've pulled the trigger on it.
Hope you're still playing!
@@JimPankey Yes Sir!
Jim, I'm new to the banjo (only been playing for a month give or take a week). And I wanted to say thankyou, your videos are the main reason why I fell in love with the banjo. And the way you teach how to play it, you honestly make it so easy to learn. I cant describe my gratitude for your videos, thank you so much. P.s. I know you already have a video on how to play duelling banjos, but could you make another one where you're close to the camera. I had a hard time trying to understand what to do with my hands. Now you may think I'm jumping ahead of myself trying to learn duelling banjos, you're probably right. Although I want to learn it because of my grandmother, she loves it, she loves how the banjo sounds, so I wanted to do it for her. And I tried learning it from other people but they don't explain what to do with my left hand very well, and I get lost. I feel way out in deep water asking for something like this. I do apologise if its too much to ask.
Thanks for letting me be a part of your banjo journey.
Sorry, there will be no further dueling banjo videos.
@@JimPankey no worries, thank you!
looked up the billy connolly cripple creek version and it helped figure out the song! and what the lyrics actually are!
Awesome! Glad you were able to find them.
Hey Jim! been following your videos for years and I now am a proud banjo player and really enjoy playing it every day. Ive recently purchased a guitar and I was wondering if you ave any youtube recommendations for beginner guitar tutorials? Thanks

Sounds scary. I’ll just play banjo. 🪕
Awesome again Jim but I really really want you to come to gladden and play with us in mrs Shelby mostellers guitar class
Deal!
Thank you so much Jim love you
Thank you for the explanation. I've been working on your beginning videos, on and off for the past few months, and one of the observations I made is that where you start teaching from doesn't sound like where anyone else playing Cripple Creek starts from. It seems most folks start from that high part and go from there, which is what you did when you played at the end of the video. I'm sure you have your reasons for teaching from there first, but I can tell you that it is very confusing for those of us who don't know the words and only know how we've heard others play Cripple Creek.
I teach it the way Earl taught it, and how he played it on the Foggy Mountain Banjo álbum.
But here’s the thing…. I’m using cripple creek to teach concepts that you’ll use forever. I don’t teach songs for songs sake. It’s all about the techniques.
And… it’s sure a lot easier to learn it in the order I teach it.
Thanks Jim for all you do and by the way what about the T shirt you’re wearing.
Shirt is here: wild-jimbos-banjo-ranch.myspreadshop.com/
Thanks Brother@@JimPankey
Love this and thank you. Is the slide on "goin' up to cripple creek" a full step or half step on 3 starting at 2nd fret? I've seen so many videos and they all sound good but when they do the half step it seems like the slight pluck on the open 2 is what they do to get the pitch of the note as its done in the song. I struggle with it and cant help but wonder if sliding from 2nd fret to 4th on 3 would give the same effect and be way easier. Hope that makes sense. I'm just learning over here!
I teach it sliding from 2-4, but do whatever you want.
Thanks jim helped alot. Is there a link for lyrics?
I don’t have a specific link, but Google should help.
It's OK 👌. Tracy Newman sang it on live TV years ago picking an open back clawhammer style. I'm pretty sure that was the right name. Good 😂 as usual.
Yup, but that doesn’t really help a lot of new players. 😊
@@JimPankey No sir. That's why I and others have you to learn from. Thank you. P.S. Could you do an even more expanded lesson on how Earl played Cripple Creek? I've heard it before and he has a different role I can't figure out. If you ever get the time. Thanks again.
Hey Jim i was wondering i just started playing and am using your videos i love your videos but i was wondering if you had a way to change the roll patterns up a little by changing the strings plucked or adding a fretted note just to change the sound? Like i found out just looking at the roll patterns you teach us to use the forward reverse roll but you alternate the 3rd for the seccond before we make the pinch and its a lot nicer learing that was you keep the finger pattern but it makes a small lick just changing the 3rd to the seccond. Any reconmandations on adding a diffrent sting to the other roll patterns?
Love your videos ocer here in ontario canada
Have a great day eh
I think the main thing to do is just try different strings... I don't think I've got a method for it.
@@JimPankey thank you sir
Don’t apologise at all!! I’ve just got my first banjo playing it everyday watching your videos!! Once I finish this playlist which do you recommend next? You’re the best!!
Awesome! Thank you! Be sure to check out the "Learn These Next" playlist for tunes you might want to try.
🪕🪕🪕❤️❤️❤️
Do you know when you will be able to come?
That'll be up to Mrs Mosteller
The old people use to refer to it, “ Make the Banjo Talk.”
As someone that grew up around a lot of old people I've never heard that
@@JimPankey Jim, I grew up around a lot of old people who liked banjo music. Most in those days who played claw hammer banjo. They would say,”Make it Talk,” was a sign that you could hear the words of a tune when they played. Just like you did in your lesson.
What is that extra set of begs on the top of the banjo neck?

Jim, any advice for a banjo player that’s scared of singing 😃 huge mental block and no idea where to begin. Would like to break that seal
Start singing... it's ok. Put on a song you like and sing along.
I do to Jim
Whenever I sing & play I end up singing "lips of green and eyes of blue" 😂
🤣
Hi Jim just wondering if you know of any more wider neck fretboard for banjos
How much wider? …and why?
@@JimPankey I'm having trouble with my fingers on the fretboard muting and touching the other strings on lesson 7 I can do the forward backward roll without fretboard but as soon as I try notes fuzzing
@@user-ez3kk1dy6n That's just a matter of practice. Everyone has problems with that in the beginning. It's not something you'll just be able "to do"; it'll take some work.
@@JimPankeywell I think its a matter the strings are to close for my fat fingers . Im trying to play a Barnes and Mullins banjo its not a beginner's banjo
@@user-ez3kk1dy6n Again, everyone deals with that in the beginning. You can do it.
What would be a banjo accessory that you couldn’t do without.

Is it possible to get a good sound recording on just the smart phone or do u always need a microphone??
Always sounds so muffled when I try to record myself
I usually just use my phone. Used my earbud mic for the vocal at the end so the banjo didn’t drown me out.
Whenever you come we have guitar class from 11:05 to 12:35
You did everything right! I'd rather let my banjo sing... that sounds a lot nicer..🤠🙋🏻♂️
☺️
Have you heard mrs Shelby new song “boots”?
I have! It's awesome.
I know I love it
Buffy Saint Marie sang Cripple Creek in her concerts. She didn't play banjo but a precursor to the jaw harp.
Yup! Mouth Bow. 😊
@@JimPankey Thanks Jim.
once you learn it it’s second nature
and a baseline for further music
Yup! That’s why I start with it. 😀
I assume if folks had never heard of Cripple Creek before they took your first lesson, they would know how to find the original on TH-cam. It's the soundtrack to Pickin' & Grinnin' on HeeHaw. And if you don't know HeeHaw, you better ask somebody!
Sometimes folks just don’t look. Hopefully this helps. 😊
You've heard the Buffy st Marie version haven't you ? ✍️
Yes, but I'm a bluegrass players so her stuff isn't really wasn't on my radar when I was learning. However, Buck and Roy were...
Buck n Roy !??? Am I missing something, ta✍️👍 bluegrass player's always have open minded , I'd like the honour of been able to call myself one but I'm sure still a little bit campfire 👍👍 in a good way , nice post pard nerrrr ✍️
😂😂
😁😬😊
Jim boi , u heard Billy Strings yet ,? , Check out dust n a baggie , thank me l8 regards ✍️👍 bluegrass band
Very familiar with him; even did a tutorial on Red Daisy.
OK I thought the goal was to just play as fast as you could play. Most videos play so fast the song
doesn't sound right anymore. Never knew the words.
'
Same!
Hope this helps!
I am one of those guys
Cripple creek never sounded good
But banjo in the holler sure does
If you know the song... makes more sense.
@@JimPankey sure does
My great grandpa used to play that song but I was way too young to remember it
His name was James Christian Bell
He built the pot and since his brother made banjos professionally he gave great grandpa toe neck
My cousin currently has that banjo
And you inspired me to get a rk35 off eBay to start learning all great grandpa Bells old songs he played, grandma gave me a hole list and I want to one day learn them all before she passes, she is 86 so I need to hurry
But thank you for all you do
You help a lot
I really appreciate you
Slower still at first! I’m hard of hearing and can’t see to well!
You can do it!
