The day my grandpa died my family and I was there for him when he passed. Later that evening on the way back home, this song played on the radio and I wept. That was seven years ago and I still weep when I hear this song like it was all just yesterday. The universe has a way of giving you what you need when you need it.
Logged in just to reply & like this comment. I had a similar experience with song and my grandfather who passed away in 2017, also a WW2 vet. What an incredible song. Thank the Good Lord for our the courage of our grandfathers - can’t even imagine what it must have felt like (and what it feels like even now) to leave home to go halfway across the world to defend your country.
I cried the second I heard the first line. My 92 yo Mama is huge on photos and memories…and my would be 101 yo Dad was a heavy machine gunner in the Battle of the Bulge..WWII Purple Heart shot 2x once thru neck one side to the other. We are LUCKY to have the greatest generation EVER!!!! All in these black n white memories that are in color!!!
My Step grandfather died about 20 years ago. He was a rambling old man who rarely talked about his past. We never really paid him much attention. After he died, we went through his things. 3 purple hearts, and 2 silver stars. I wish he was here now. He had stories that we tried to piece together. He was a hero. Fed the orphans. Protected his men. Loved the Lord. Bless you, Herbert Brasher. You don't know what you've got, until it's gone.
@@briyo76 god bless your grandfather. I wish I had known mine better and got to hear his stories as well. One day we will all get the chance to catch up.
That post makes me proud to be an American thank you I love reading stuff like that other than the fact you did not get to hear his stories but I I have the upmost respect for the men of that era
This is a song that is the soul of what our country should be and used to be. I don't care what genre of music you like. If you listen to the story told in this song, this sums up what a real man and a life well lived is all about. I pray that when the good lord calls me home, I am listening to this song.
Everytime I hear this song I get teary eyed, thinking of all the men and women that have and had fought so unselfishly for our country, especially my dad a Vietnam Vet! As well as my Grandfather, WWII. Thank you to all those who have and are serving! Much love to you all and God bless you and your families!!
Same here tears me up everytime I hear it. My grandfather was a ww2 vet. Greatest generation ever. No generation will ever match what they accomplished. God bless the USA 🇺🇸
It's not often you sit and watch a video on youtube and then realise you watched it without moving and with your mouth open. This performance makes that happen. Astonishing performance of a great song.
THIS IS MY DAD'S LIFE.....HE WAS A TAIL GUNNER ON THE B24'S.....I PRESENTED A BOOK MY DAD WAS IN DURING THE PLOESTI RAIDS....I WAS HOPING TO MEET JAMIE BUT COVID MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE....WHAT A GREAT SONG AND THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THE PANCREATIC CANCER FOUNDATION.....MY BROTHER ED JUST PASSED OF PANCREATIC CANCER.
The morning my grandfather passed, I put this song on and it brought me comfort. As much as it hurt, I didn’t cry. That was December… That summer, out on the road trucking gravel, I let my mind wander as I often did. Suddenly a memory of him popped in and I thought to myself how great it would be if In Color came on the radio… This was before I had on demand music in the truck. As if someone was listening the DJ announced this song was up next. I fell apart right there. Came to a stop and let it all out… That was 14 years ago. And the memory of that day is still as vivid now as it was then.
I'm 54 ,My Daddy was in the Navy in WWII. I was the 6th of 7 kids. My Dad rarely talked about the war but I was always the one just me and him when he talked about it. He was stationed in the Philippines..He was on a ship going to Japan when they were ordered to turn sound. That's the same day they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima ..After that conversation .I said Daddy you were in the Navy you don't have any tattoos..He said I was scared of that. Lol..My Dad come from a farm family..Never been to a big city..Oh how I miss that Man..
My grandfather fought in world war I and II and when I was a kids back in the sixties. He would tell me stories that you probably shouldn't even tell kids. He actually got shot by a machine gun about six times up the stomach. he actually fell out in some snow. And they said the only reason that he survived by the time they found him was because the cold kept him from bleeding to death. But he had the scar to prove it. He was my buddy and he got cancer. By the time they knew he had the cancer it already spread to four or five different places. He called me his gold nugget. Glad you have all those good memories with your dad!!
I will listen to this song every night of my life. It so reminds me of my Dad and his older brother that were trying to survive the Ozark timberland instead of a cotton farm. They helped keep their family alive through the early 40’s. Miss them and those like them.
Hands Down one of the best written songs I've heard. I'm a musician|Writer myself and man this is top notch fire . I'm going to Add a vid card to my vid channels for sure . Thanks Jamey Johnson you've shown me that good music writing still does exist. way to speak from the heart!!!!!!!!

This song reminds me of times when I’ve sat and looked at old b&w pics in the past of my parents and theirs. Hits me deep in the heart EVERY TIME! Beautiful!
You know music is good when it gives you goosebumps!! This song gives me goosebumps. So impressive that it's just him and his talent making this happen.❤
I remember telling my best friend and my father-in-law that we needed to be glued to our seats when he came on. Reliving some awesome memories watching some nostalgic Farm-Aid clips. Thanks for sharing!
First time I heard this, it made an immediate impression on me.. I'm amazed that Jamey is not a superstar like Waylon and Merle.. His vocal style and tone is perfect for this style of country music. Good luck FarmAid.
Cuz the crowd always wants to sing this song with him, and usually drowns him out - great to hear his voice front and center without a bunch of woo hoos and yee has
This is the most beautiful song. Your voices beyound wonderful. I had not heard you both ever. What a peace inside me I feel. When I die I hope they this at my fureral. I would honored.
Just a guitar, couple of amps and one hell of a voice. 100% talent.
That's due to the fact that you can't fake talent!

Same here, with more tears to see how all they worked and died for is being purposefully abandoned and destroyed.
Absolutely! God blew our American hero’s. We have to get our country. Lots of blood shed for this place
