1969 Dodge Coca-Cola Charger by MPC - Episode 15

  • Today on the WorkBench, I am building the Coca-Cola sponsored 1969 Dodge Charger by MPC.
    This is a snap together curbside kit With no engine/transmission to build. It comes molded in red, black and white plastic. It can be built as is, right out of the box but you know that I couldn’t just assemble it without giving it a little love.
    So I decided to throw it into the paint booth and spice it up a bit. After a coat of white primer, two coats of Krylon “Red Pepper” paint, a light coat of Dragonfly Glaze, then top it all off with three coats of clear sprayed over it, I was ready to get to the decals.
    The decals in this kit are not for the faint of heart because they are huge. They went on fairly easy but were a little stubborn to lay down flat at first. It wasn’t until I was working on the passenger side decal that I noticed that the hood decal was slightly misplaced and was now set in place. It didn’t throw the rest of the decals off very much so the finished product was passable.
    Well, I hope that you enjoyed watching this video as much as I did building it.

      Thank you! That's the Dragonfly Glaze effect. It helps to add a little bit of colorshift properties to ordinary paint.

    Nice looking build. Even though it is a curbside, there is a lot of options available with this kit. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank You! I was somewhat disappointed when I discovered that it was curbside but figured that I would make the best of it. There are plenty of potential options for this kit for sure.

    That turned out fantastic. Impressive bare metal foil and decal work. (I probably would have split the difference on the rear ride height)

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank You! I have been working with Bare Metal Foil since the mid 90's. I wanted to lift the rear just slightly. I thought that it would look good with the stance that I was giving it. On the other hand, I could have dropped both axles a bit with an equally good looking stance.

    You did nice..If i build i want to drop the front end and raise the back as you did....good work!!

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! There is a very limited amount of drop and lift that you can do with this kit as is due to the molded in front and rear suspension. I would have loved to drop the front a bit but the tires were about to rub the inner fenders at the factory height so, I'm glad that I didn't. Thanks for watching!

      Thank You! My channel is still fairly young (less than six months old at this point) but I plan to keep building until my fairly large collection (250 kits +) is completely built and they will all be posted up here. Thank you for watching!

      Your very welcome..I subscribed to your channel ,and I'm thinking about getting into model cars again.. Funny I remember in the 80s model building was very popular..I saved up money from cutting grass ,and delivering papers to buy a model kits ..☺️

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench

      @@martyaseavers4977 First off, let me thank you for the sub! Model building today versus in the 80's is vastly different. In today's hobby there are a ton of cool options that weren't even thought of back then. Resin body creations that the mainstream manufacturers never made, 3d printing is coming into it's own, there are different types of glues and paints available also, this thing we call the "internet", that allows you and I to share what we build with the rest of the world. To name a few...
      As far as saving up to buy a new kit, well, you have to do a bit more saving now than you did back then. You can still find decent deals here and there but the average kit price is between $25.00 - $35.00 (unless you hit up Hobby Lobby when they are having their 40% off sale). It's still a fun hobby to have and it is just as addictive as it ever was.

    Looks good. This would make a quick and dirty General Lee when a person gets fed up with the MPC glue version. 😩

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank You! I believe that this kit was made from the same mold as the General Lee. This kit comes with the same turbine wheels and push bumper that you would find in the General Lee kit just different decals. BTW this is an MPC kit...

    • @MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage
      @MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scaleautoguysworkbench For some clarification, there are 2 MPC Dukes Dodge Charger kits.

      The first one that I was referring to in my comment above was the original version released in 1979 that was re-tooled from an earlier kit from 1967 and it came with a HEMI engine and was a full out glue-together kit. There was always problems with that kit, but the decals were accurate.
      The snap-together kit you have was created in 2014 by Round2 under the MPC name...so you are right there. I looked it up on Scalemates web site. - This kit is more accurate to the car in the show, however it is lacking the engine being a snap kit.
      Anyway, if a person gets fed up with the MPC glue together kit, they could get this snap kit, paint it orange and swap over the decals.

      @TI4438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it does. Everything on this kit fits unlike that POS Country Charger.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage As I haven't ever owned the glue together kit or the "Country Charger" I was unaware of the problems with either one of those but I have heard some grumbling about the Country Charger from guys on Facebook groups. A creative soul might consider swapping the chassis for something less problematic and cutting the hood open on this Coke Charger as an alternative as well.

    Nice job ! My kit is in my line up for building this Winter. There IS an actual car out there that is slightly different that can be used as reference material. It has a red interior, and more green, and the mag wheel spokes are all chrome coke bottles ! The engine is a 440 six pack, what else ?

      Sorry to hear that! You can always contact Round2 to see if they can help you with that. I haven't had any issues with them when I have had issues in the past. Well, except for the melted tire on the '64 Galaxie 500 kit. If they can't/won't help you can always try Ebay to see if someone is selling a set. Quality control is severely lacking at AMT ever since moving production to China. It would be super nice to see those molds come back home. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      Yes, I realized that after the entire build was done.... At that point I couldn't go back to fix it without destroying the entire set of decals and having to start all over again. So, I just went with it as is...
