    Everywhere we go, it's the same, isn't it? Modern trains hardly attract a second glance, but steam still has the magic to pull the crowds.

      The Retro Decade Revival Project is gonna bring steam trains back into the public mainstream and back onto the mainline where they belong.

    About 13 carriages approximately 20 ton each plus passengers etc roughly 260 tons.
    I followed this train got some photo,s video etc, happy to see it is NOT an oil burner!!!! Oil is in Short supply these days, there is PLENTY of good coal about, ( more than we will ever use ) it annoys me seeing a loco like this one converted to burn oil, it really brasses me off!

    I'm an Oamaruian in my golden years. A wonderful spectacle for me was how the steam locomotive entered Oamaru station from the south. First the smoke, then the light, then the engine working hard. Will love to see any footage if its out there.

    can someone please tell me why it needs 2 diesel units to help it move IT COULD DO IT BY ITSELF A LONG TIME AGO SO WHY DOES IT NEED HELP NOW!?

      that crazy duckman. Needs banker through mihiwaka tunnel because of safety reasons. And probably just incase they need to take over the excursion like they did for example. And frankly long hood would be rather. Uncomfortable for 3 hours each way

      Maybe to prevent trackside fires?

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@omepeet2006 That was a reason on the return journey. Grass fires were started along several kilometres of the track, beginning on the outskirts of Oamaru and extending south past Totara. Every fire appliance that could carry water was called out, a couple from north of the Waitaki River. There was even a helicopter with monsoon bucket involved. The train was stopped at Wainakarua, south of Herbert and waited there for the two diesel units to arrive from Palmerston, where they had been dropped off on the way up from Dunedin.

      It does NOT need ANY HELP!! Getting into or out of Dunedin for the trains is quite a climb.
      If anything the JA,s probably as much or more power than the DJ diesel, NZ diesels could only hit 100kph top speed, the JA,s were doing 75mph on the Canterbury Plains and they can IF allowed go faster than that ( i was told with No load behind they could hit 90--95mph ) but the South Island Express for runner to the diesel hauled Southerner, easily could make lost time. Brilliant Locomotive the JA, they could do all most anything!!

    Nice footage. I will be putting my onboard footage up as soon as I have completed editing. Im not sure if you are aware as to why the Dj's were put on the front for the return to Dunedin from Herbert and that is that 1240 started several track side fires which stretched from Weston to Maheno. The fires where caused by Flash Backs through the Fire Box causing sinders to be expelled out onto the dry grass alongside the track ballast

    Is it just me? Or is that narrow guage? :/

    • @NZRailAction
      @NZRailAction  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is narrow gauge. All New Zealand mainline and preserved lines use the 3'6 inch gauge.

      Ah...

    • @NZRailAction
      @NZRailAction  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first public railway in New Zealand (The Ferrymead Branch Line) opened in 1863 was built in the board gauge (5'3) and a few other lines used that gauge. In the 1870's all NZ lines were rebuilt to today's gauge of 3'6.
