I'm not a muppet I happened to be a diesel mechanic and a diesel engine will get addicted to ether I don't care what anyone says I work on them all the time people use it year around because thay got it addicted to ether so you can believe what you want I know.

@@anthonyyoung7344 I'm not a muppet I happened to be a diesel mechanic too and those engines that wont start without ether even in the summer are fucked and need rebuilding. 9 times out 10 the the rings and bores are shagged through high hours or poor maintenance and would still be shagged if ether didn't exist. Addicted to ether just means the owner/operator cant be arsed to fix the problem and the only way to start it is with compression in a can.

Your quite rite Mucka, the only problem with ether is the dope using it, and emptying half a can down it's throat.
engines only get "addicted" to it because there fucked 👍
we've rebuilt loads of engines and always been down to worn bores, piston rings, lack of compression.

The hot air intake broke on my grandfather Ford 333, so we used would take the air filter out and blast it with a propane torch. Worked a treat especially on cold days.

You are completly right. I used starter spary on my ford 2000 tractor for 5 years but only in small amonts because i had a bad fuel pump, and my tractor did not start up byself even when the engine was warm and i needed the tractor to work. Two years ago i had a bit of time and i broght my pump to a shop for reconditioning and it was like 100$ and now my tractor works without any problem and it starts without any spray or anything.

At the same time the old lad that worked in the yard pulled out the air filter and sprayed ether into the filter housing not noing I was holding the key, well the thermostart heater plug ignited the ether and a fire ball come out the filter housing and when I looked the old lad had a black face and burt eye brows. We had an after market ether cold start system fitted on our trucks when I worked in Germany MANY years ago to lower the flash point and warm the engine in the pre-heater days. Used sparingly and when actually required it was a godsent but it required a trained operator to be the brain for that truck, if it didn't start you found out why and you fixed it! Great to hear someone talking basic engineering sense. Nice upload. 👍

I am a new subscriber and going over some old videos . A good video this one , being working on Marine diesals for 40 yrs and the Ether addiction is rediculous , the people who say it dont understand a lot . I agree entirely that the reason you have to use is because there is something wrong , and until you fix the original fault you will have to keep on using it , SIMPLE . As for wanging them over on the starter motor , this will just cause damage ! The insulation in the starter motor and on the leads is only made for 10 second bursts, so if you burn ya leads you will need to keep usin Ether because will end up slow starting speeds. As you said its all to do with heat on top of the pistons through compression , if they have being stood a long time , or being stood in sub zero temperatures the compression is going to be low . Long periods of storage , everything will have contracted and oil presence will have disappeared , sub zero temperatures same again .
Every engine I have rebuilt has needed Ether till its warmed and the compression rises.

Years ago when I worked on plant, an old B100 on a cold morning would not start. twin oil bath cleaners. Dropped off one bowl and used a burning rag on a stick. Started ok, but then noticed the paint on the second oil bath bowl starting to bubble ! the oil had caught fire . oops.

Great explanation. I'm a or was a farm boy in the states. Grew up in Minnesota and on mornings when the wind chill is -30 F. WE HAD TO USE ETHER. Or light a fire under the engine to warm it up. And I don't think my father would have agreed to that going on under a $80000 tractor and cattle needing to be fed.
Any way, we had ether attached to the engine on some or a can of it in the tool box. And if used properly and can of ether would last forever because like you said. It just needs a couple of squirts and you're good to go. Great vids. Really like how you make those old girls purr again.

You are absolutely right mate. I bought a Nuffield 465 that had sat for 6 years, Changed all the oils fixed all the brakes and gaskets. Used a bit of ether (aerostart in Australia where I am) to wake her up and off she went. Next day started on the button no ether at all. See people, they don’t get addicted, it’s only to help if you’re finding it hard to start it.

Detonated a 7.3 powerstroke that randomly stopped running couldn't find an issue fuel pump was running just wouldn't fuel injectors were clicking... randomly got air in it despite having a full tank ethered the piss out of her glow plugs decided to turn on and yeah my air filter ended up in the road on firing and I had to get a new air intake and filter..... 50k miles later still running no idea what happened... changed where I bought fuel and never had a problem agian so you tell me

@@LordMuck yep just started mis firing 1 cylinder at a time and I'd say we spent 2 fairly new 31p battery's to the grave trying to bring it back to life ... left me on the interstate 4 times until I got all the fuel out of it just had to get out hit the fuel pressure testing port to pet the "air/whatever the fuck was in that fuel" out and it eventually came back to normal. I gotta say tho testimate to the powerstrokes rods she detonated hard

I've been a heavy duty mechanic for 20 years and I've use ether many times for various reasons. An engine does not get addicted to ether. If you need ether above freezing. The engine has low compression. It either needs a valve set or a rebuild.

Good video good info. Here in the southern US addition to starting fluid is what we refer to some old tractor or logging equipment that had the problems you referred to but some guy didn't know how or want to spend the money to fix so after years of dry starting and wearing out the cylinder walls wouldn't have good compression to ignite fuel air mix and wouldn't start with out starting fluid keep the information coming

So what about engines with glow plugs... Will it pre ignite even with a few squirt or is it fine

    • @LordMuck
      @LordMuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If you have functioning glow plugs and the engine is in good order you won't need ether. If it's sacked out and your glow plugs don't work it won't matter.
If you happened to use a couple of squirts combined with the glow plugs it won't do much either way despite the horror stories.

I never understood how that wives tale got started. Its a machine, its not alive, how can it get addicted to anything. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have it though. Ive seen tractors at auctions in that past that had manifold heaters in them and the manifolds have been blown almost clean off the side of the engine. You know what happened there. Seen a few IH 560's and 706's with glow plug engines that had broken cranks and cracked heads, you probably know what happened there to. lol

@@LordMuck in my instance both engines were going in the shredder as the faults were terminal and it was to get me by for a few months so not worth spending on them one had been hydrauliced and the other had a bad score on a non lined bore but people are too lazy to diagnose the issue and just blame eather.

That was a good video. I totally agree with everything u said.
I knew an old international that, on a frosty day. Just needed a little puff to get going. But the rest of the year it would happily go to work without any help.
But I've seen people stand there, and wind half a can in, with the resulting bang and clouds of black smoke. It's so obvious there is something els wrong. Some will continue this procedure for years, then when it's totally ruined. Will say. Well it was always a bad starter.

My 2 pence worth, he’s dead right if your always needing ether that lump of steel doesn’t need rehab it’s needs looking at. The only heat without heaters comes from compressing the gas in the cylinders as pressure and temperature are directly proportional (gay Lussacs law) you could turn it over all day in the cold and take two years off your starter or give it a sniff. You decide

    lol, great vid!
I only came across 1 engine that took a prolonged shot of ether, it was a worn out, clapped out 15 liter in a semi (lori). It wouldn't cold start without it, and I would stand there another minute holding the go pedal, till it could idle. I was one of the only people that could start it on really cold mornings, and I got it to start every time....
I just woke up a lawn mower, that had been inoperable for months, with some (made sure to use small shots to get it to start, and stay running long enough to clear the carb)...
I've driven semi trucks (lori's), with ether buttons....
