Theoretically everyone can be beat. Practically is another story. Tyson had superior attributes, explosive speed, power. Ali was the same way as far as superior attributes. There is a certain level of speed and power that just can not train for. You can either deal with it or you can not. Most of Tyson and Alis opponents just could not.
I really like Larry Holmes as a fighter... He has one of the sweetest jabs in the history of the boxing game... He's also pretty spot on with what he's saying...
I think Tyson would knockout Holmes in the eighth round, and come back within 7 seconds and TKO Tyson in the 14th round. In a 12th round, I pick Holmes by decision by 65 percent.
Well, Tyson definitely proved his chin could take a pounding against Ruddock, Holyfield, Lewis and even Douglas.....Any and every fighter CAN be knocked out or TKO'd. Mike definitely proved he had a high threshold and it took more than just ONE punch to take him out much like Holyfield. Guys like Michael Moorer and Tommy Morrison are prime candidates for the Glass Jaw Hall of Fame....
poseidon perez Tyson was nowhere near the same fighter in 90 that he was in 88 Tyson mistake was leaving Rooney Tyson stopped using head movement, bobbing and weaving, The jab and throwing combos and stopped throwing to the body Tyson became a a one punch brawler who thought he was the best he didnt need to train 88 tyson smokes douglas
I was more impressed with the Holyfield victory. I do believe that Douglass controlled the fight with Tyson leading up to the knockout. It was a once-in-a-lifetime fight for Douglass, though. It was different for Holyfield, as Holyfield simply had Tyson's number. The could of fought over and over, and Holyfied would have kept beating Tyson. Holyfield really was the blueprint, agree...
I agree. The young, 'in his prime' version of Holmes would have found a way to defeat Tyson. That version of Holmes was willy, and tough and was also a 'survivor', when faced with tough situations. Holmes was tough, smart and talented and had that great jab. I wasn't a huge fan of his in his prime, but grew to appreciat him more over time. Great champion.
Not between 86-88,he ate these guys for breakfast, the jabbers and tier uppers didnt do shit after tillis nad tyson was only 19 vs tillis who was in his best shape of his life!
@ClearwaterMMA Since most fights happen in situations like parties and bars, or group of guys vs group of guys ground fighting isn't going to work. You can't put yourself in a vulnerable rolling around the ground a get kicked it the head. Getting kicked in the head on the ground will change your life forever. Also that's not taking in effect getting off your punches off before the other guy puts you at a huge advantage, So as a boxer or striker your likely going to win.
Spinks was in his dressing room and heard Tyson accidentally punch through the wall when Spink's people came to watch Tyson's hands being taped up. Michael Spinks was scared shitless and we never heard from him again after that KO.
They didn't have to pay him. He's just a good dude. I saw him and Tyson doing an interview on a youtube clip recently and they were real cordial. Larry smart enough to know he's over the hill. A prime Larry definitely beats Spinks I think.
@TheRatedRThuglife77 Douglas was awake and listening to the count which was right at the end of the round anyway so Tyson wouldn't have had time to finish him off. If the ref was a couple of seconds too slow, that isn't Douglas' fault.
@XionComrade Sorry but that's bull. Buster Douglas absolutely boxed out of his mind that fight. Watch his footwork, punch selection and timing. Tyson had far worse performances than that one (against Lennox for one). Buster was the better boxer on the night and deserved the championship.
@boxingjos funny how both holmes and angelo had it dead on, dont go buy a coke you might miss the stroke, spinks would get knocked out........it did happen as they said......spinks had the jinx but true he never had the heavyweight knockout blow...........oh well..
@TheRatedRThuglife77 Buster definitely got a long count (it was 12 seconds not 15) but so did Mike later when he got knocked down (google: SPORTS OF THE TIMES; Referee's Count Is What Counts). Anyway, agree to disagree. I don't think Mike was robbed at all but if you do, then it's all good.
Both Larry and Sugar Ray where shrewd boxers. Smart and tough. The difference was Sugar Ray had big charisma. If Larry didn't have that bitterness, he would have been more liked. Larry was great - top 10 all-time in my opinion.
@flatpat LOL i'm talking about a 1 on 1 fight. forget about people jumping in and weapons. 1 on 1. one guy uses only standup and the other guy only uses groundfighting. the ground guy wins 99 time out of 100. why is this so hard to understad?? why do people always bring up other people jumping in or weapons??? stick to the point i am making.
who cares about grappling? nobody wants to pay to watch two men wrestle on the floor. I consent that grapplers will defeat strikers in a straigh up bout but who cares? People want to see people punch each other, not put each other in an arm bar!
Problem is, when Tyson has his feet together and could be easily pushed off balance, he's loading up a punch. And with his quickness, you better be quicker.
@Enigma1UK would you listen to Tyson's advice now if he gave his opinion on how to beat one of the Klitchskos? Because he would get his ass whooped now. Holmes would have destroyed Tyson in his Prime. Tyson couldnt beat boxers.
Your right but tyson was dangerous. Now in terms of actual boxing Larry would whip ass but if he got caught as he did in their fight he won't do to well.
I don't believe that anyone thought Spinks was worthy of this matchup.....I just don't see the logic....You need a beast to fight Tyson, screw technique and skill!
Larry Holmes is easily the most overrated heavy we've ever seen. For some reason he's given all kinds of kudos for beating up dozens of tomato cans. The two best fighters he faced were Ken Norton at the end of his career and Mike Tyson in his prime. Holmes, in his prime, was life and death with a faded Norton. Imagine if he had faced Norton while he was in his prime! It wasn't Holmes' fault there was no one good while he was champ, but then again he's lucky there wasn't anyone around any good.
Larry Holmes he fought in a relatively weaker era. The 70s and 90s were two of the strongest era for heavyweights. The early 80s was full of washed up fighters and lower tier fighters. But I would say even if Larry Holmes fought in the 70s and in his prime in the 90s he would still come up at top; in the 90s he would probably be a champion, in the 70s he would probably be the number 1 or 2 contender. But yeah, he wasn’t exactly overrated but when he fought a aging Norton and Shavers he still got the slight edge.
beat him out of his absolute best, with kevin rooney, and cus d'amato. dude have you seen his fights against pro's like james bonecrusher smith, that guy could fucking ko lennox lewis with 2 punches. he has to be the biggest guy in pro boxing in any time. he could take butterbean's strongest punch and laugh at him, in order to beat tyson in his prime, that guy would have to be more pissed off than tyson and hit harder.
You think the comeback Foreman was better? lol. I mean he DID some things better, but he was not more effective overall. Prime Foreman would have DEFINITIVELY taken out Tommy Morrison, and prime Muhammad Ali would have dominated the comeback version of Foreman so easily it wouldn't have been funny.
Never, styles make fights and in this particular situation, no way.Even the great Cus Damato wanted tyson at 19 to fight holmes. He always knew holmes style was a piece of cake for the younger tyson's wrath.Look at how holmes fought holyfield 5 yrs later. Holmes was still a very capable fighter when he faced tyson, not at his best anymore but SNipes and shavers had holmes out on his feet ,tyson of 1988 finishes any yuear holmes just as tyson of 1988 finishes any year lewis.styles make fights.
Oh I totally agree Spinks didn't stand a chance we was over the hill. But I just meant that Holmes was correct when talking about how to approach Tyson, frustrating him and closing off his mid range danger was key.
That's how you fight Mike Tyson at 4:22.You gotta command respect from the start and that left uppercut as Mike Tyson is very vulnerable to uppercuts, sent him reeling backward.Tony Tucker was a very good fighter
3:57 Sugar Ray "I'll be Michael Spinks"... of course you will Ray, of course you will. You "fought" cowardly just like Spinks. I wish Larry Holmes would've knocked your head off and said "I'll be Mike Tyson".
Spinks was kind of strange. I think it was rigged against Holmes. Strange that Spinks showed no spirit against Tyson, when he was if anything spirited as a fighter. Tyson was going to ko him regardless, but there was a lot of money at stake.
Spinks's manager went to talk to tyson exactly before the fight to discourage him or something like that and he finds tyson punching holes in the wall. so I guess anybody would be beat by an angry and ready in everyway tyson
Larry Holmes was 2 years into his first retirement when he took the Tyson fight, He was past his prime, and had 2 months to train for the fight. Larry in his Prime would beat Tyson.
@@hammad9091 Who do you think would win? Archie Moore vs Michael Spinx Ezzard Charles vs Michael Spinx Thomas Hearns vs Michael Spinx Joe Calzaghe vs Michael Spinx
I wouldnt listen to Tyson if he was telling how to beat a Klitchsko, But I would listen to Foreman. Why? Because Foreman was that young undefeated destroyer that got KO'ed too, but Foreman was able to learn new tricks and better what he had. Tyson never could fix his mistakes.

I really like Larry Holmes as a fighter... He has one of the sweetest jabs in the history of the boxing game... He's also pretty spot on with what he's saying...
What ignorant comments. A prime Holmes would have probably beaten Tyson.
No, he wouldn't. Styles make fights, he would won by ko

@@sebastianblackfyre No, absoluty. Tyson would won any Holmes version : stiles make fights and Tyson was too elusive, fast and strong for him.

Larry Holmes is very intelligent, watch his interviews.
But Holmes is correct, look at how everyone has beaten Tyson, tieing him up and jabbing at him at range. :)
'accidental headbutting' works too
Dandramere tyson was out of his prime when he got beaten no one can beat him in his prime becauze he was too fast and powerful

Both Ray and Holmes where picking up on the strategy to beat Tyson. Holmes simply couldn't execute.
Yep and the first strong enough to successfully execute it was James Douglas. Efective jab and good footwork was the key
