The Ballon D'or lost all it's credibility when Diego Milito wasn't even nominated in 2010...
Diego Milito won 5 trophies with Inter in 2010 (Seria A, Copa Italia, UCL, Club World Cup and Super Copa) . He was arguably their best and most important player during the 2009/10 season. He was Inter's top goal scorer and he scored 30 goals that season (14 more than any other Inter Milan Player) which included 22 in the league and 6 in the UCL. Was 2nd top scorer in Serie A and 3rd top scorer in UCL. Diego Milito scored the only goal in the Copa Italia final against Roma and also scored in the Semi Final against Fiorentina, scored the winning goal in the last match of Serie A that won Inter the league, Milito bagged a brace against FC Bayern in the UCL final and also scored in the round of 16, QF and SF of the UCL against Chelsea, CSKA and Barcelona. He also scored several other decisive goals that season. Despite doing all this, Diego Milito wasn't even nominated for the Ballon D'or in 2010. ( Was he not even among the top 23 players in the world? )
Wow, you just put the last nail on that coffin, didn't remember what Milito did in 09/10 season. Clearly, the voting system must change for the Ballon D'or to be at least a modest award, not just a marketing one.

Why are everyone complaining about Salah finishing 7th? The Ballon D'or voting got over around mid Oct. Salah didn't win anything with Liverpool last season and barely made it to the Top 4. Harry Kane who performed better than him last season (Top scorer + Most Assists in the League) and also reached the Euro's final, still ended up at 23rd position. I do agree that Salah's been fantastic for the last 2-3 months and that will make him a contender for the next year's Ballon D'or (2022). Kindly stop making his current form the argument for him finishing higher in a Ballon D'or whose voting ended 2 months ago.

@@eiler1987 you are right, voting should happen in January. Even the teams that go on a winter still play quite a few games. For example Bayern from mid-October till the winter break this season will have played around 15 games. So to have an award that ignores a portion of the season where teams will play 15-20 games is stupid to say the least.

2013 Ballon D'or :
Ronaldo didn't win any major trophy and won whereas Ribery won the Treble (UCL, League and League Cup) and still finished 3rd in Ballon D'or Voting.
Ronaldo and Ribery were both wingers/wide players that year. Ronaldo scored 59 goals for Madrid that year and Ribery scored 16 goals for Bayern. In the 2012/13 UCL, Ronaldo was top scorer with 12 goals whereas Ribery only scored 1 goal. Ronaldo was without a doubt the best player at Madrid in the 2012/13 season and the only one keeping them competitive. I agree Ribery was the best player at Bayern during the 2012/13 season but was Robben, Lahm and Neuer that far from him. They were also as important as Ribery to that Bayern team's success.
2019 Ballon D'or :
Van Dijk won the UCL, finished runner's up in the Nations League and runner's up in the League (1 point) but still finished 2nd to Leo Messi who had only won La Liga that year.
Messi scored 51 goals from 50 games for Barca in 2018/19. Was the Top Scorer in the League and UCL. He was by far the best player at Barca and the only one who was keeping them competitive on all fronts right till the end. I do agree Van Dijk had one of the best seasons a defender has had in recent memory but was Van Dijk carrying that Liverpool team like Messi carried Barca? Was the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Allisson that far from Van Dijk during that season? They were also as important as Van Dijk to that Liverpool team's success.
When Messi and Cristiano retire, we all will truly realize how great they were season after season for such a long time...

It is unfair as Craig Burley suggests. Basically, the award will only be given to someone from a high standing Fifa nation who win international trophies. There is a risk that too many great players that will never be recognized if that's the case but at least if Lewandowski lost, he lost to a fantastic player.

The thing is football has change a lot in the last 2 decades. The World Cup used to be the only competition in which the world could watch the best players playing against each year because the UCL and some european leagues were not on tv cable in tons of countries around the world. Today all the european leagues, europa league and UCL are showed to the world by tv or internet. Everyone can watch the UCL in any part of the world and that is without doubt the competition with the highest level of football. The world cup is not the best competition. However because of history is the most important and also has that nostalgia thing. Therefore Shakka and other old players has that feeling for the world cup. However the reality is the world and the game has change and the UCL is the real place to watch the best football.

Would there be any argument for Messi if this was his second Copa win? Terrible take on the fact that people were sold on the "finally" winning it. The tournament was in the summertime and since then Messi is still on vacation I guess. Messi got hot here and there but Lewandowski had stayed on fire and he keeps going hotter. It's December. “64 goals…incredible” yes it is incredible but that’s the only thing he has over Messi and in every other aspect of the game Messi sweeps the floor with him.
Since when did football become just about goals? Disregard everything else impact on the team, control of the game, contributing to goals/assists/chances created, carrying an underperforming side to a trophy both for club and country, MVP for his country and instrumental to winning the copa, does that all not count?
Messi outperformed Lewandowski in every conceivable metric aside from goals and they both won two trophies this year so you can’t even argue trophies won I’ll even go as far and say winning a trophy for your national team is more impressive. Last year should’ve been Lewa but Messi fully deserved to win it this year .

Lewandowski is an absolute team player, who creates spaces for his teammates. He's doing the same things, you just mentioned, as if those qualities belong exclusively to Messi. Also breaking a 49year old record is kind of a big deal. Gerd Müller was arguably the best Striker of all time. (Müller and Messi have a similar physique, which I find very interesting). And all those, who came after him, including Klinsmann, Littbarski, Fischer, Hrubesch, Dieter Müller, Jupp Heynckes, Ulf Kirsten, Stefan Kuntz, Giovane Elber, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Miroslave Klose, Edin Dzeko... , never even came close to breaking this record. Think about it. The Bundesliga has only 34 match days, not 38 (La Liga, Premier League). Lewandowski only appeared in 29.
Let's just hope that Bayern and PSG face each other in the Round of 16 so we can finally sort things out.

For Ballon d’Or I do not believe team trophies should count. Messi was better than Lewandowski in everything outside of goals. Messi played better than Lewandowski in one of the worst Barcelona teams of all time. He was the best player in Copa America. No debate. This is not sympathy d'Or for last year.

I don’t think cups or any trophy should matter when it comes to the golden ball. Personal achievements I.e goals scored, passes made, or records broken, should only count. Cups, and other trophies are more team achievements. Both Lewy and Messi have been playing for there national teams and haven’t gotten any where close to being a successful team (minus Argentina when they finally won copa, but probably not due to Messi alone). Point is, personal achievements, and not team achievements should be considered for golden ball.

Know your facts first.
How many times do people need to be told, that goals alone do not determine who the best player is. First of all, if you understand football, you understand that many amazing runs, dribbles, passes etc don't result in goals, while close range goals do. Also, Messi had the most goals+assists in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and didn't win the Ballon d Or then. If Messi doesn't deserve the 2021 Ballon d Or, he should have won the 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Ballon d Ors

Messi scored 51 goals and 19 assists in 2018, won Primera Liga and Copa Del Rey, and still finished 5th that year. Statistically he was the best player on the planet, but the award went to Luka Modric. Why? Because he won Champions league and finished runner up in world cup
To say the goals and assists make you the best player on the planet means that the 51 people that assisted his goals are less important than his 19 assists. Unless he scored all of them off of a dead ball or by winning possession and scoring, he had help. I believe the number of goals that he scored that season in matches where his side were already winning is pretty significant. Also, he very rarely scored the first goal. I definitely think the addition of a statistic denoting "goals of significance" would add some much-needed perspective to the gaudy goal totals that for too long were the lazy standard by which a player's quality was determined.

They're just doing what they are asked to do. It's not even really with the fans who support goal involvements as the key criteria for winning the award. They are just echoing the sentiments of the people that vote on it. Those are the ones I have the problem with. But, as it doesn't like it's going to change anytime soon, I just see it for what it is. A marketing tool. Individual Awards given two players in an IX-a-side sport really should be as specific as possible with their criteria or they shouldn't be given at all. The Golden Boot and The Golden Shoe have it right. Anytime you ask individuals to analyze something as broad as footballers' performances over a year, you are accepting the results to be governed by inherent biases.

Being a honest Bayern fan, I can easily say that lewa didn't score in big games before 2020 but since then he is the best. Coming to the context of balind'or, Argentina is the second best team in south America with or without Messi. They could have win copa without him as well as Bayern might do that in budnesliga. However, main point is lewa was consistent throughout the year in each and every tournament (even in euros he scored 3 for Poland), so I feel the ballond'or is biased since Messi was out of form in early Barca and in psg days as well.
