Barbara Frittoli as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello. Florence, 2003. Conductor: Zubin Mehta. For a free English translation, please see the following: operainenglish.blogspot.it/201...
We all agree. I Saw her as Liù at the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona...excellent. Thanks Barbara. And she happens to sing to her own name: L'ancella della sua madre. Her name Barbara!!!
lolz and besides being like really cultured and stuff, he is so nice that he actually takes the time to impart some of his wisdom informing us that this play, you know, verdi's otello, is not a musical... so nice of him
There are a LOT of operas which take a LOT of liberties and defer from the original play. This is no different. This is essentially the same as taking a book and turning it into a movie. There are always differences but certain things must be edited, abridged, or changed in order to fit the new way it's being presented.
probably the best Desdemona in the industry for around 15 years. no doubt about that. perfection in voice, expression, musicality and overall artistic impression. Desdemona is not a spinto, but just a lirico and very much demanded to be so by Verdi himself - all well documented. If any further doubts about that, study the score. the repetitions of "salge, salge..." in the third verse is 1) different in the score and 2) executed by many sopranos very boringly. the repetitions are not the important notes, but how you take them and make them interesting from within the personality of the role and the deep crisis she is in at the end of verse three shows what an extraordinary artist Ms Frittoli is. And even more so how she does the following line.
so according to your logic the play should not be staged, and if it is staged the actress playing desdemona should not let the audience know she has a song in her head, because, well, it's in her head. oh you wrote "almost to herself" so i guess only the people in the first rows should be able to listen. Were you too desperate to criticize something? find something you actually know about next time
Sigh. Another misguided person who views every role in a vacuum. How boring. What if this Desdemona is caught up in the memory? There are about 1000 different ways to interpret the Willow song, and it's imagery etc.
seguramente tú si lo sabes cantar!!! Hay que ver los críticos italianos que se creen que lo saben todo. Imagino que tú no das ni una sóla nota. Presuntuosa!!!
I don't get it. Shouldn't she be singing quietly. She's struggling to remember the song. Why is this portrayed as someone giving it all she's got, and putting on a big performance? Nothing against her, she's a great singer. But err.. not for this part. It's so Un-desdemona like :(
She had a good material...but yoou can her her vocal problems...and now there are very strong...sometimes shes so horrible...she is s victim of the buisness...so sad
Operadonna, I saw her at the MET too, I agree with you in everything you said about this wonderfull soprano!!
awesome singing indeed

She reminds me a little the beautiful voice of Dame Margaret Price. Frittoli sounds lovely in this role.
Bella aria
qué hermosa voz de Bárbara, para mi gusto, muy apropiada para Verdi
indeed we are=) he is, without a doubt, pHD in literature at the very least=)
Catesoprano: You must be deaf. I love Barbara as Desdemona. Brava!!!

It's called being facetious

I'm sorry opera fans are too stuck up to get your joke. It was very funny
lol! "this play isn't a musical" you sure know what you're talking about! but we are so ignorant!
