  • Me driving my 2001 Foden pulling a 40ft 30ton container. It has a 16spd ZF Synchro box in it, but I still prefer a roadranger anyday!

Good old days spent in hook lorry foden Alpha 3000 ...I had almost Zero experience and IT was good to get me going on 32T 8wheeler with splitted gears as start because if you learn to drive that then you Can drive newer lorries and everything too

I think Foden are the best trucks ever made

Syncromesh or not I still double the clutch. It makes for a far lighter change especially for the likes of older heavy Volvo syncro type box's that can be doer to change when cold. Can't beat a constant mesh box for a light clean change provided the driver has an ear for music. Thanks for posting.

A bloke I worked with used to play land of hope and glory on a Fuller box. And he'd been driving for years. :-)

When did syncromesh gearboxes start to come out on lorries? I know that any lorry from the mid 80's I have seen being driven, you can see the driver double clutching to change gear, But in the Scania 143 driver instuction video from 1991, they say that all Scania gearboxes are syncronised, and they mention also that double clutching is not recommended.

@@europa2000man the AEC Mercury had a synchromesh box in the mid 1950s, but later versions reverted back to constant mesh type.

@@brianosborne9446 I didn't know that synchromesh gearboxes even existed in the 1950's. I thought it only came out in the 1960's on cars only.

@@europa2000man my family firm, bit before time, got our first synchro tractor unit in May 1966 a Merc LS1418, new out in the UK then but it had been out in mainland Europe for several years
and as has already been said the AEC synchromesh was really early too, do late 50s sounds about right.

Your right, it is a synchro gearbox, but the synchro was stuffed, it wouldn't smoothly go into gear unless I double clutched it. A new gearbox went in a week or so after this vid was shot.

What is the engine brand? Sounds pretty healthy, pulls hard. sounds like cummins by the sound of the jakes. But when you are on the gas it sounds like a Cat because cummins dont have that smooth turbo sound when pulling.
